Is anyone old enough to remember what it meant to actually physically sit on one's haunches?

I know "sitting on one's haunches" has been used to discribe a person who does absolutely nothing - much like our Republican-led House of Representatives have been doing ever since Obama's been in office.

But, what I'm referring to is the physical act of "sitting on your haunces". To do this one has to squat down - with you knees sticking straight up in the air - and your feet very close (or touching your butt).

Years & years ago - you would see men doing this often while enjoying a cigarette. Of course, in order to do this - a person has to be fairly skiny. However, it's doubtful that most of today's young men would be able to get their body into this position - BECAUSE THEY ARE WAY TOO FAT!!!

If you want to see a photo of men sitting on their haunches - just pick up a copy of the June 4, 2014 edition of The Democrat Argus or (if you have online access to view the Democrat Argus) just look on page 2. There, you will see several men who are quite skinny "sitting on their haunches - smoking a cigarette".

You might also get a glimpse of what people used to look like before fastfood restraunts, gallon sized soft-drinks & all the junk-food Americans consume these days.

This was also a time - when people had to actually put in a good day's work (physical work). Back then, nobody sat behind a comuter or tv hours & hours every day.

No sir, people were up before dawn & put in a hard days work. Came home and ate (normal portions - or less) of home-cooked meals, consisting of meat they had butchered & vegetables they had grown themselves or fish or wild life they had went out and caught or killed.

Of course, high-blood pressure, high-cholestol & diabetes were almost non-existant. Sadly though, back then - nobody knew that cigarettes could be harmful to your health - and many people died of lung cancer.

Yes, we've come a long way since then - but, somehow (healthwise) we have digressed quite a bit (except that very few people smoke anymore...

I sometimes wonder - with all the technological advancements that's been made in the last 75 years - that somewhere along the way - people have lost sight of just plain good ole fashion "COMMON HORSE SENSE"...

What do you mean "not many people smoke anymore"? What planet do you live on? Smoking is still the major cause of heart and lung disease and is rampant among young people.

61 is living in a dream world. Like the Democratic controlled Senate
has done nothing.
Probably today, sitting on your haunches means really sitting on your
ass by the mailbox and waiting for the check..........

Let's turn the question around and ask "WHAT PLANET DO YOU LIVE ON"???

Yes, it's rare to see someone smoking these - days, because smoking is now considered socially unexceptable - and is barred from most restaurants, businesses, hospitals & other public buildings. Some businesses don't even allow smoking on their premises (not even outside on their property).

I don't doubt smoking is the major cause of heart & lung disease. The reason for this is that many people who are suffering from the effects of smoking - started smoking years before it was found that smoking was harmful to your health. Yes, back a few decades ago - doctors actually recommended smoking to people with nerve problems!

However, some people don't pay the price for smoking for decades (even though they may have quit smoking years ago).

Since I don't go to bars or other places of ill repute, nor do I hang around the outside businesses trying to catch someone sneaking a smoke - I don't have occasion to see people smoking. It's probably been months & months since I've even seen anyone smoking.

You must be living in "lala land" if you do not see people smoking. Why do you think tobacco is so highly taxed? People will feed their habit at any price. Restricting smoking has not had the impact in reducing usage and neither has free smoke cessation classes.
