These days we hear the word "SOCIALIST" thrown around a lot - usually directed at Obama & Democrats as a negative.

First, lets define SOCIALISM as an economic & political theory - advocating public or common ownership & coopertive managment of the means of production & allocations of resources (Wiki).

It would be fair to say that our founding fathers believed SOCIALIST PROGRAMS that benefited the majority of citizens were constitutional & ethical. And almost every President & Congress has suppported some socialists programs & added new one as the need arose.

The United States government is not owned by anyone & we elect our President & Representatives & have the power to fire (impeach) them. Each citizen of this county (of voting age) has the same vote power - regardless of wealth. So, our government is a SOCIALIST SYSTEM of public & common ownership and co-operative management.

The U.S. Government is authorized by the constitution to collect taxes to pay for programs the government sees benefitting the citizens & providing security. Our tax system was set up to be A SOCIALIST SYSTEM that we contribute to (supposedly) to benefit all citizens.

The U.S. citizens have a common ownership of the military and national security. Therefore this, too is a SOCIALIST PROGRAM that belongs to the citizens for the benefit of citizens.

Public roads, bridges, postal service & fire stations were progams designed by our founding fathers to benefit citizens & as these grew - taxes were collected to pay for them, making citizens common owners of these public works. Therefore, these too, are SOCIALISTS PROGRAMS.

No where does our constitution say that our government is just limited to one certain political ideology & it appears our founding fathers supported both SOCIALISTS & CAPITALIST PROGRAMS!

If anyone can find a secton of the constitution that prohibits SOCIALISTS PROGRAMS or shows where our government is required to be CONSERVATIVE OR CAPITALIST - please let me know...

17,000,000,000,000.00 In debt.

40% of every dollar spent today on social programs is borrowed money.

I’m all for taking care of the elderly, providing for defense, paying for good roads and infrastructure and anything extra we can afford to pay for, without raising taxes into the confiscatory range. Our present crop of politicians don’t seam to understand that.

When your family’s financial books said “no you can’t afford it”, your husband didn’t let you buy it, alum61. Our government needs to start doing the same.

17 Trillion dollars in debt should be an embarrassment to us and it’s definitely not fair to our children. PERIOD.

Our founding fathers would not approve of 17 trillion in debt and spending like there’s no tomorrow.

With a record like that, your not qualified to teach the nation Socialism 101.

Our Fed taxes this year exceeds $20,000 w/o FICA. We voted "O" in both elections. But we are no where near the 1%. Your Kool-Aide is sour. Sweeten it up! GOP could have won with Chris Christy (as Ann Coulter predicted), but the crazy right put up Mitt the Knit-Wit. GOP only keep the House by gerrymandering the district lines and now 4 RED states try to change electoral votes counting. If that would have already happened before the election, Obama would win by 3 million votes but lost the electoral college decisively. I hate to say it but it's time to get rid of the electoral college.

First of all, on a personal note - my husband would never have denied me anything I wanted - no matter the cost! But, since we were both very frugal & always made major decisions/purchases TOGETHER - it was NEVER an issue with us. We were both very level-headed and ALWAYS lived within our means.

That being said, what I want to know is why do Republicans keep harping on this SOCIALISM issue all the time? No, neither Obama nor the Democrat party is any more SOCIALIST than Republicans are when it comes to spending the tax-payers' money!

Republicans have been badly beaten at the polls TWICE! But, instead of trying to figure out where they went wrong - and learn from it - and set out on a course to change - so they might be able to win elections in the future. All they're doing is acting like a bunch of spoiled brats who didn't get their way. I'm surprised we don't see some of them falling down on the floor kicking & screaming.

No, instead of trying to turn over a new leaf - Republicans are resorting back to the same old tactics that lost them the election in the first place.

When will some SMART LEVEL-HEADED Republican come along and take hold of the Republican party - and give them a good shaking & spanking and set them straight???

I think we just got a glimpse of what Republicans NEED to hear from REPUBLICANS. Just go to Youtube & watch Bobby Jindel give Republicans a dressing down. My favorite part of his speech was when he said "We (Republicans) have got to QUIT BEING THE STUPID PARTY...

Yes, you Republicans have tried every dirty trick in the book -trying to bring Obama & the Democratic party down - from name calling, bad-mouthing, lying cheating, trying to buy the election & every other vile under-handed thing imaginable. And where has it gotten you??? The more you slander - the more votes you lose. When are you Republicans ever going to wake up and smell the coffee?

Oh, by the way - clowns like Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity & the rest of the Republican propaganda machine are only bringing your party down. The best thing the Republican party could do is get all these clowns off the airways. Maybe then, your party can gain back some credibility...

What do you mean, my husband (who passed away Feb 1, 2012) never would have spent money on anything major or terribly expensive without first discussing it with me? Yes, I suppost this is true.

But on the same token - I would never spend money on anything major or terribly expensive without first discussing it with my husband.

Maybe, this MUTUAL RESPECT for each other - is one of reasons we enjoyed 51 very happy years of married life...

That's just the way our marriage worked - and unless, things have changed drastically - I believe that's the way marriages are SUPPOSED TO WORK!!!

"College Professor"??? You've got to be kidding! I was born and raised right there in C'ville. My Momma & Daddy both worked at Brown Shoe (my Daddy died when I was 13). I grew up in a house on Jefferson Ave (in the Shoe Factory addition)

I had two older brothers (one is now deceased) & one younger brother. I graduated from CHS in the class of 1961.(Oh, and I have only a high-school education (with a few college writing classes - paid for by my employer). This was necessary, because I did a lot of writing on my job with United Telephone/Sprint.

I come back home to Caruthersville once or twice a year to decorate my parent's & brother & sister-in-law's graves. I will be coming home in a couple of months to decorate my husbands grave as well as my other family members.

Yes, Ben Stein does have his level-headed moments. Of course, he's still a Republican - and there's a whole lot I don't agree with him about. But, I do share his views on several issues.

Yes, we need more Republicans like Ben Stein. Obviously, he is not so intimidated by party ideology - that he is afraid to speak his mind.

Another good example of a SMART, LEVEL-HEADED Republican - is Gov. Chris Christy of New Jersy. I believe, he is the most popular Republican in the country now-a-days. This is a man WHO WILL NOT BE INTIMIDATED by party ideology - From what I can see - Christy is the best hope the Republicans have for winning the presidency in 2016.

Of course - Gov Bobby Jindel of Louisana may surprise us and be just as plain-spoken as Chris Christy & refuse to be intimidated by party ideology too.

Republicans are going to need a block-buster candidate in 2016 because of Hillary decides to run - she will be VERY HARD TO BEAT!!! Even many REPUBLICANS ARE SUPPORTING HER...

The Republican party was made up of liberal progressives from Lincoln until Eisenhower. It wasn't until 1964, they became a right wing party and their conservative movement/Southern strategy has been a racist appeal to Southern Whites who never got over the landmark 64 Civil Rights legislation. Thank God that demographics and education are killing them off.

Letter to a future Republican strategist regarding white people

To whom it may concern regarding the United States federal elections of 2014, 2016 and beyond:

Allow me to introduce myself to you, the existing (or aspiring!) strategist for the Republican Party. My name is Eric Arnold Garland and I am a White Man. Boy, am I ever – you need sunglasses just to look at my photo!

If I read the news correctly, I fit a profile that is of extreme importance to the GOP, as I embody the archetype that fits your narrative of Real Americans. Just how much should my profile interest you? Are you sitting down?

My family lineage goes back to the MAYFLOWER, BOAT ONE!!!(Garland family of New England-> John Adams -> John Alden -> Plymouth colony ->KINGS OF MUTHAF***IN’ ENGLAND)
I am a heterosexual, married to the super Caucasian mother of my two beautiful children who are, inexplicably, EVEN WHITER THAN I AM.
I am college educated (Master’s degree!) and affluent.
I am a job creator and small businessman.
We pay a lot of taxes! Every year!
I grew up in a rural area and despise laziness!
Having started my own business, I have complained at length about the insanity of federal, state and local bureaucracy – and its deleterious impact on the innovative small businessman.
I currently live in the suburbs in a historically Red state.

HOLY WHITE PEOPLE, BATMAN!!! Wow, you’re thinking – this is not some Mexirican in the Sun Belt we need to attract via harsh anti-Castro policies or appeals to “valores de familia”- this is the BREAD AND BUTTER OF THE GRAND OLD PARTY, a Mayflower-descended small business owner, burdened by taxation, looking out for his beautiful White family in the suburbs of a city (St Louis) surrounded by racial tension and urban blight!

How can I put this gently? My wife and I are not sensitive to your messaging, nor did we vote for the candidates you proposed for us this past Tuesday.

B-b-but, what? Aren’t we investors, hard-workin’ white folk surrounded by same in a manicured cul-de-sac, scared by a vision of economic collapse amidst the takers in a land of fewer givers? Didn’t Mitt Romney’s strong family, wealth, leadership history and chiseled chin give us the uncontrollable urge to high-five him into the White House?

No.

May I explain why not, purely for your education, such that you might be interested in winning an election on the national level at some point in the future? It bears pointing out that I should be your Low Hanging Fruit, the easy vote to get as opposed to, say, African-Americans, Latinos, or Asians – and you’re not even speaking well to me. The reasons why ought to concern you deeply.

As a Card-Carrying White Male I love expressing my opinion irrespective of whether people care to hear it, so let’s get started.

Science - One of the reasons my family is affluent is that my wife and I have a collective fifteen years of university education between us. I have a Masters degree in Science and Technology Policy, and my wife is a physician who holds degrees in medicine as well as cell and molecular biology. We are really quite unimpressed with Congressional representatives such as Todd Akin and Paul Broun who actually serve on the House science committee and who believe, respectively, that rape does not cause pregnancy and that evolution and astrophysics are lies straight from Satan’s butt cheeks. These are, sadly, only two of innumerable assaults that the Republican Party has made against hard science – with nothing to say of logic in general. Please understand the unbearable tension this might create between us and your candidates.

Climate - Within just the past 18 months the following events have come to our attention: a record-breaking drought that sent temperatures over 100 degrees for weeks, killing half the corn in the Midwest and half the TREES on our suburban property – AND – a hurricane that drowned not New Orleans or Tampa or North Carolina but my native state of VERMONT. As an encore, a second hurricane drowned lower Manhattan, New Jersey and Long Island. The shouted views of decrepit mental fossil Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma that this is a fraud perpetrated on the American people by evil, conspiring climate scientists is belied by such events and is looking irresponsible to even the most skeptical.

Healthcare - My wife and I are quite familiar with America’s healthcare system due to our professions, and having lived abroad extensively, also very aware of comparable systems. Your party’s insistence on declaring the private U.S. healthcare system “the best in the world” fails nearly every factual measure available to any curious mind. We watch our country piss away 60% more expenditures than the next most expensive system (Switzerland) for health outcomes that rival former Soviet bloc nations. On a personal scale, my wife watches poor WORKING people show up in emergency rooms with fourth-stage cancer because they were unable to afford primary care visits. I have watched countless small businesses unable to attract talented workers because of the outrageous and climbing cost of private insurance. And I watch European and Asian businesses outpace American companies because they can attract that talent without asking people to risk bankruptcy and death. That you think this state of affairs is somehow preferable to “Obamacare,” which you compared ludicrously to Trotskyite Russian communism, is a sign of deficient minds unfit to guide health policy in America.

War - Nations do have to go to war sometimes, but that Iraq thing was pretty bad, to put it mildly. Somebody should have been, I dunno – FIRED for bad performance. Aren’t you the party of good corporate managers or something? This topic could get 10,000 words on its own. Let’s just leave it at: You guys suck at running wars.

Deficits and debt - Whenever the GOP is out of power, it immediately appeals to the imagination of voters who remember the Lyndon Baines Johnson (!) administration and claim that the Republican alternative is the party of “cutting spending” and “reducing the deficit.” The only problem with your claim is that Republican governments throughout my entire 38 year life (Reagan, Bush 41, Bush 43) have failed to cut spending and deficit and debt EVEN ONCE. I hope you understand that your credibility suffers every time you promise one thing for three decades and do the EXACT OPPOSITE. Egads – if you actually were the party of fiscal responsibility – you might win our votes despite your 13th century view of science!
