And what kind of food would you want in this new restaurant?
New ideas are brewing up here in Caruthersville for a new family restaurant that will provide great food, great atmosphere, and most importantly, an overall great dining experience.
We want to get the city's input on the kind of food service they would like to see come forth here in the bootheel area before we start collaborating.
We want this to be the city's pride and joy just as it is ours :) So help us help you!

Obviously cleanliness and good waitresses are a must. But 1) LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION 2) Try to compete less with existing businesses: Business days & times.
Saturday Sunday & Monday is most opportunity. 3) Watch your labor utility rent costs
4) cook what you cook best .... find your niche. GOOD LUCK

I think a family style buffet like Grecian in Dyersburg would go over great. Or maybe one of the old buildings down town with a New Orleans style ambiance would be good since we are a river town.

Why compete? Town cant support 2 chinese restaurants. Utilities at Movie Gallery probably a killer with so much glass.

Also a fish house usually goes over great, IF the fish is good!
We used to have one in Braggodocio, Wardell , Steele... but a great salad bar like the grecian would be a bonus !!

I think a place with a good breakfast bar hot plate lunches and dinner buffett with salad bar serving a variety of good home style meals would be a plus, we have a lot of early rising farmers, and truckers who would like a nice friendly place to eat a ready breakfast before work, and lots of workers who would like to grab a hot plate lunch to go for their noon break, along with many FAMILIES who would like a place to dine out with enough choices to serve most families. Not everybody has the means or want-to for going out of town to eat. clean establishment, public-friendly workers, and GOOD management I think would go far in this community!

I think anything comparable to Grecian in Dyersburg would be a wonderful thing. We go there once a wek and the food and servce is alwys wonderful. And I think one of the old buildings on Ward Avenue would be a good idea with a New Orleans theme.

COMPETITION: We all want the new restaurant to be successful! If we have 60 ppl eating bfast every day and 2 places now that's 30 ppl every day. Add another serving bfast it will cause the established places to possibly now average 20 ppl instead of 30. Plus there is no profit in serving bfast (unless too expensive) and bunch of old men drinking $1 coffee. LOL

In my opinion, if you want to start up a restaurant and ensure your survival, keep it simple. For an ideal example of how to do it, go to a place called Hayden’s in Poplar Bluff. This little restaurant is located in a lower end residential neighborhood. It is an “out of the way” place with low visibility. They have been in business for over sixty years. They have an outstanding business. They make one of the best cheeseburgers in Southeast Missouri. They call them steak burgers because they use fresh, high quality meat. Nothing is frozen. They have BBQ also. One of their specialty items is pink lemonade made from their own recipe which is delicious. People drive from a fifty mile radius to eat there. My wife and I drive a 60 mile round trip to eat there. Obviously, we do not go every week, but when we get a hankering for a really good cheeseburger that is where we go.

I believe a few outstanding items like the fresh meat burgers, good BBQ, maybe even a really outstanding hotdog, hand made French fries, and onion rings and such is all you would need to sell. Add to that some outstanding desert items to top it off and you would have people lined up to get in. Hayden’s has homemade pies. I would like to see a place that made a “slaw burger”. If you go in a restaurant that serves hamburgers and ask for one with only slaw they think you are nuts. They have never heard of such a thing. I tell them to listen to the song with the lyrics,“Lets all go down to Dumas Walker and get a slaw burger.”

Of course, good management, outstanding cleanliness, service people that know how to dress (clean, neat) and how to greet and treat people would be necessary.

It would not take a lot of overhead to start up and operate a place like that and I believe it would be successful. Also, they have a 50’s/60’s theme in the interior décor of the little building in which they are located.

That’s my two cents worth.

A really good idea is one like the ORIGINAL KNOX's in Caruthersville. Good food & reasonable prices! I myself would put one in like that if I had the means to. The Jolly Cone in Van Buren is one of the best places to get good food at a great price! Only change it to be like the old Knox's building with inside tables and outside awning with tables. Great idea!

I have eaten at the Jolly Cone when passing through Van Buren for a period of about four decades. The quality of their hamburgers has decreased greatly from what it was several years ago. Now, they have the typical frozen slug meat in their burgers. I do not stop there these days. I wait for Hillbilly Junction to chow down.

Your idea for something like the old Knox's is good. Have not had a pepper steak sandwich since they closed. Boy, those were good.

It really doesn't make much difference as long as the good is good and the prices are reasonable. The number one problem that every single restaurant around here has, is starting out with great quality food and reasonable prices, then once they build up a steady business, they lower the quality of food and jack up the prices. You can't do that around here or anywhere for that matter. I've seen it done way too many times before; people aren't going to support it.

As a small business owner, let me tell you now, that people in this town do not support their local businesses. Thats why it is so hard for small businesses to stay open here. Everyone will drive to Dyersburg, Kennet, Blytheville, etc., to go out and eat when there are places here locally to get the exact same food. Believe me, I know. People don't shop local and they dont eat locally either. Do your homework, first! It will open and close all in one year! Wait and see! Im sorry to be negative, but like I said, I am a business owner here in town, and have had the same customers since day one. Caruthersville is NOT friendly to their own. This I know from experience!.

Amen!!!! You are so telling the truth. And the ones that don't shop here are the ones wanting to run it.
