Honey you need to keep moving and not stop in Carthage. There is nothing here but a dead, lifeless, ghost town. You will not find work here and will wind up driving way out of your way to find any. Carthage has allowed it’s self to dry up by it’s holier than thou residents, greedy merchants and politicians. The grocery stores are pathetic, no decent restaurants, and an almost but not quiet, super Wal-Mart. As far as your CNA training…the only training here is in high school football…and that by the way that is all the recreation here. That is it. If you do move here keep your expectations low and maybe just maybe you will not be disappointed.

Obviously you haven't been to Carthage lately. It is drying up and it is because of politics and keeping it all in the family. Been this way in Carthage for 100 years and it ain't about to change. Sorry

the truth

The truth is that Carthage is like most small towns during this economic down turn. Lots of factories closed because they can outsource the jobs out of the country for much more profit. This left people without jobs. There is a large population of people that dont have more than a high school education and some dont even have that. That with the high incidence of young single Moms, people that are not willing to work, people not ambitious enough or smart enough to pursue higher education and the presciption drug and recreational drug abuse that goes on here as hurt the community. That said this county also has some of the most honest hardworking caring people you will ever meet. I feel bad reading some of these posts because I can tell that the ones that complain about how bad people are here have not met the whole other world thats in this county and just complain about the people that are struggling. I wish we had more jobs for people but the truth be known the age of graduating from high school getting a good job in a factory and working there your whole life and supporting your family is over. People are going to have to have more extensive training and education to live here and have the American dream. Anyone can have tough times and need help but as long as we expect someone else to support us, family or the government we are not going to be happy or feel a sense of accomplishment. I wish we could all work together to come up with some answers.

I suggest that no one move to Carthage because it a dying town.Highest employment is in the illicit drug trade and our politicians are so busy saving us from ourselves that they've let the town not be competitive with the adjoining towns to the point that there's no new oppertunities

Blame it all on the politicians. Good grief you always have to blame it someone else. They are plenty of reasons why the town is the way it is today and it's not because of them. I wonder if you have lived those 100 years in Carthage? If you have you would already know it hasn't been like it is now.

I'm sooooo tired of people peeing and moaning about how Smith County is "the worst place ever". Get real. Move somewhere else where you think the grass is greener and you'll find out that everybody is going thru this economy. Every little town/county with factory jobs are suffering thru shutdowns, cutbacks and layoffs. It's really easy to blame the elected officials, but let's get real. What can they do? Offer big tax deals & incentives? If they did you'd just p & moan about how they gave away the farm to some company to move here. The current batch of complainers in Sm Co. will complain if you do and complain if you don't. If you'd take one second to FIND something/anything to be proud of, you'd live a much happier life and a happy citizen base would have more influence than you know. I'm not even born & raised here, but I appreciate this area and am proud to live here.

Ok, I will be fair and say that there are some people in Carthage and its small surrounding communities that are great people but the bad ones are the ones everyone remembers. Anyone that lives in Smith County knows that there is a MAJOR problem with the "good buddy system". There aren't any decent Grocery stores or Restaurants. The school system is a joke to say the least. There are some jobs there but they are in the part of Smith County that is considered Gordonsville.

The fact is, Gordonsville is beginning to grow and Carthage is shrinking. Yes, I grew up in Carthage and 50 years ago there were small " dry goods " stores and furniture stores and 5and dimes stores. People met on the court house lawn for a weekly drawing and people actually talked to each other. We actually had a walk in theater and a drive-in.The good ole boy system was not as bad then as it is now and it is hurting Carthage. Along Hwy 70 we had Gary Whites Service Station, Skeltons Market, Wilsons Supermarket, McCalls grocery but none of these exist anymore except for Gary White.....why? Everyone I know is afraid to open a new business because they are afraid no one will support it.

Thank you joe for letting me know that,... I will continue to run behind him when i see his ignorant ass on here hurting/degrading/terrorizing others that are honestly suffering while he tries to bring them down. We the taxpayers are keeping him and his Mrs. ifunowhatidid up while he sits on here talking his BS,....
