My husband has taught everyone in our family to shoot and we all have guns close to our beds.
Criminals are running rampant around here and we will protect what's ours!
This is shameful that our area is like this now because when I was a kid we didn't even lock our doors at night or when we were away.
U guys stuped

My husband works nights at Trw and I'm scared now also I didn't use to be but am now.
Is it legal for me to have a gun at home without a permit?
I'd rather not have one around kids but what if someone attempts to rob us while my husband is away?
Several around here have been burglarized and anyone could be next.
We have a alarm system but all it does is call police and we could be murdered before they arrive.
What type of gun do you suggest for a woman in my situation?

It is legal to have a gun.My husband used to work nights and I was hell with a 22.Jonny Bane used to tell me just make sure you drag their ass in your house.Self defense. I always told him they weren't getting through the door before I shot.

Buy a home defense 20 ga. shotgun, load with home defense rounds, keep tube full, chamber empty,(you can rack the slide and load one in the chamber in less than a second),and most important is learn how to use it safely. Also a good gun mounted flashlight is a big advantage.

Pretty sad when the police response is so poor and enforcement is so bad that people feel they need to be armed in their homes. Police presence and good enforcement will and does curb crime.

Not enough cops to be everywhere at once.Rarely do cops prevent a crime.Only good to write the report after the fact and investigate who did it.Everyone should own a firearm and learn how to use it responsibly.

I agree we should all own a firearm but not about cops not preventing crime. Good street cops with good skills not only learn how to track crime areas but also who is doing the crimes. They dont have to be everywhere but just aware of where current crimes are occurring most.

You do not need a permit to have firearms in your home. You also do not have to pull a shot perp into your home as you mentioned. TN law states that you may use deadly force if you feel that your well being or life is in jeapordy. This does not only apply to events inside the home. You better be damn sure that your life is in danger and that you can prove it prior to making the decision to pull the trigger. If you dont, you will end up being the bad guy and spending time in prison.

Not wanting to argue, because we are mostly on the same page, but can you give us one example of a cop preventing a crime in this county?

Maybe not in Smith County. But proactive patrols and legal traffic stops help to keep criminals on their toes and they at least think about it before the commit a crime, at least with Metro. Also the thought that you may be selling or sharing drugs with an undercover officer will slow down drug traffic. It all has to do with proper training, leadership and the desire to do what you are getting paid for, not just sitting in a car and waiting to get dispatched to a call and take a report. Also listening to people in the area you work helps a lot, they know who belongs there and who doesnt. Also once the reports are taken, it should not just be given to a detective, the patrol officer needs to know how to followup and cntact neighbors to see what they know or who they have seen lurkking in the area.
