I was wondering if anyone knew of the LAWS pertaining to traffic stopping, for FUNERAL PROCESSIONS, and also MOVING OUT OF THE WAY FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES, AND MOVING TO THE FARTHEST LANE FROM A TRAFFIC STOP BY LAW ENFORCEMENT!

Yesterday as my husband and I were STOPPED on highway 293 we witnessed a Funeral Procession turning left off of the exit from highway 41 onto 293 and then left onto 293 headed towards Emerson, there was a black (I think) Dodge truck coming from where I-75 was and instead of him stopping for the funeral he nearly wrecked with one of the cars involved in the funeral procession! NOTHING makes me ANGERIER than someone breaking into a funeral procession, or NOT STOPPING OR MOVING OVER FOR AN EMERGENCY VEHICLE! I have written to the Daily Tribune concerning this matter BUT apparently the ones that need to see it either can't read or just plain don't give a darn! Can someone ENLIGHTEN me as to the laws?

You are suppose to move over if possible for an emergency vehicle. It is against the law to follow an emergent vehicle as well as during a funeral procession you are suppose to pull over. You can get a ticket the only thing is catching them do it.

You do not have to stop for a funeral if there is a median on the other side. However it is common courtesy not to. You can not receive a ticket for this. Also it is not illegal to follow emergency vehicles. You have to stay back 200 feet and 500 feet once they have arrived at the call.

Get your laws straight. You DO NOT have to stop for a funeral procession regardless of if there is a median or not. It's just common courtesy. You are supposed to move over when an emergency vehicle is stopped, such as a traffic stop. If moving isn't possible, you must slow to a speed which is safe, less than the speed limit. If there is room, get your ass over. Do you want me to pull out my code book and tell you EXACTLY what it states for each?

You bet. I just sat through 16 hours of traffic law last week. Also, it's 300 feet that you have to stay back from an emergency vehicle responding to a call.

Well at least I know now that Franklin can pretend to know all the laws! Instead of just being a thrn in the side of people here on topix! I really agree with "Whatever" and their sentiments Franklin & Si_Si about them getting a room!

As I started this discussion about Funeral Processions & Emergency Vehicles, I really thought that there would be someone that (without) "WISEASS REMARKS" would come and tell the real LAWS and COURTESIES for the above topic but as always we get the resident "SMARTASSES"!

Franklin is this a threat? Guess what (little man) I AM NOT AFRAID OF YOU!!!!! You are all BLOW! So keep up your little rude comments!

I asked for someone that has "EXPERIENCE" or "EXPERTISE" in the laws pertaining to this matter! I wanted to know if it was a law to pull over for a FUNERAL PROCESSION? I already KNEW that the law IS that we are to COME TO A COMPLETE STOP OUT OF THE WAY OF EMERGENCY VEHICLES! THERE ARE SOME THAT DON'T EVEN MOVE OVER WHEN A PATROL CAR HAS A VEHICLE STOPPED!
And then there are some out there that don't have the common COURTESY to COME TO A COMPLETE STOP while THERE IS A FUNERAL PROCESSION passing by even on the a DIVIDED HIGHWAY!!!
And I can almost bet that you are one that doesn't have the COMMON COURTESY to do this!

I just hope that one day that the EMERGENCY VEHICLES AREN'T going to someones house that won't pull over for them!

I answered your question and you mouthed off. Like I told you, you do not have to stop for a funeral procession that is passing by you in the opposite direction. It's common courtesy. I can assure you that I have NEVER kept going. You do have to yield the right of way at intersections and such, and it is illegal to break into the procession. Yes you have to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles in route to a call IF they are running lights AND sirens, but not if they are only running one of the two. Now, are your questions answered to your satisfaction or would you like me to post the codes here for you to see?

As far as coming to a complete stop when an officer has a car pulled over, negative. You must attempt to move to the next lane to the left or if this move is impossible, you must slow to a safe speed which is less than the speed limit.

Woooo Hooo Franklin has some "admirers."

I never said you were to "pull over and stop" when the police have someone pulled over I said "you must slow down and move over to the next lane"!!

"THERE ARE SOME THAT DON'T EVEN MOVE OVER WHEN A PATROL CAR HAS A VEHICLE STOPPED!"

And as for breaking into a Funeral Procession I have seen it done many times, IN FACT I was in a Funeral Procession and "AFTER" we were broken into I took my own car and stopped traffic at the next traffic signal and then a friend took the following one, believe me I was VERY ANGRY at those that had broken the Funeral Procession line! And if it is "illegal" for people to break into these Funeral Processions, WHY .... aren't there more law enforcement vehicles to stop it??

And as for an EMERGENCY VEHICLES with LIGHT AND SIREN going there are MANY MANY times that I have witnessed vehicles continue going while this EMERGENCY VEHICLE IS TRYING to get to the call...WHY then isnt there a Police Cruiser sent out with each call? Maybe if LAW ENFORCEMENT was there and decided to write a few tickets maybe the PUBLIC would get the hint!!!!!!

Are you serious? Honestly? First off, it is NOT the job of police to lead funeral processions. They do it as a SERVICE. There are many towns and counties in which the only one who leads a funeral is the hearse. They usually have purple lights flashing. Now, if there were 5 officers to each procession people would be irate that so many patrol cars were tied up with a funeral and not out patrolling and protecting.

Second, you do do realize that a patrol car is any emergency vehicle itself correct? Do you think people always get out of the way for them? Hell no. Should that patrol car simply decide not to respond to the emergency call just so he can stop to write a ticket? No way. As for sending a patrolman on each call the fire dept or ambulance service gets, there are a couple of reasons why this doesn't happen everytime. One, manpower is never what I should be. Why? Money. Two, an ambulance doesn't sit at the hospital all day until they are called out. They have to eat, get gas, and other things just like the rest of us. So in order for an officer to be right there ready to follow at all times, he would have to shadow the ambulance 24 hours a day. Again, money.
Let me ask you, have YOU ever stood on the side of the interstate or highway and tried to work? I have and I do. Let me tell you, NO ONE gets more angry when people do not obey the move over law than I do. But I can not leave my job to chase down every single vehicle that breaks this law. Do you have any idea of how many officers and killed after being struck by automobiles each year? It's a dangerous job on MANY levels and the majority of you people do not have 1/10th of the courage it takes to do it. Yet you complain everyday and wonder why some officers are so anal about traffic violations.
