Donald, I was interested in anything the Dixie Mafia was doing in my neck of the woods in the 70's. I know the mafia was in North Alabama, but never could find out if it was the Italians or Dixie Mafia as it seemed that a lot of people worked for both groups. I know there was some union strike at a local coal mine that the Mafia was behind, but never knew exactly where the orders were coming from.

Steve what john told me the ten yr. i knew him was nothing like the real Mafia, the name came from the media there was no bosses who told you what you could do or not do,there was DM all over the south
but in name only,i think that a proper name should have been Dixie Outlaws,i knew some of johns friends they reminded me of the key stones of the 30th movies,so to answer your ? they had nothing to do as big as union bussines, more like strip joints, boose, dope.

Kid Rock grew up on an apple orchard in Romeo, Michigan, and his father was a wealthy car dealer. His parents would entertain guests with Bobby singing covers of Jim Croce, Johnny Cash and Bob Seger at their barn parties. However, by the time the 1980s began hip-hop had emerged, and a late-night TV performance by the Fat Boys had Bobby hooked. He became immersed in hip hop with groups like Run-DMC, Beastie Boys, Whodini, Too Short and Eric B. & Rakim.

Is the DM real, I don't know. I do know, from reseaching, Buford Pusser went to Oklahoma and could not ID Kirksey Nix Jr. as the shooter that killed his wife. This happened on July 9, 1968. Why would that DM want Pusser killed. Pusser was not the "Walking Tall" sheriff the movies made him out to be. Pusser received bribes from numerous bars, stills, and moonshiners. Pusser killed Louise Hathcock, the autospy showed that Hathcock was shot twice in the back, then shot in the head. The IRS was closing down the Shamrock, Pusser wanted Louise's money. Towhead White got that, so why would he kill Pusser. ABC agents following White, after he got out of prison, document numerous times that White met with Pusser. White was not killed by Jr. Smith, Jr laid the trap. Shooters from Louisiana pulled the trigger. White killed George Fugua in Texas and that didn't make Carlos very happy. Back to Pusser, he and his wife were separated at the time of the shooting. TBI looked at Pusser from the murder. DA Will T. Abernathy told them to follow Pusser's information. Is the DM real, I thinks so, but they would turn on each other.

Rex or whom ever crowned the name "Dixie Mafia', it was made so a multi-state criminal task force could be grouped to fight crime. The states (MS, TN, AK, TX, OK) all were having the same problems. A group working in different states committed crimes and returning to their home states. The money for the task force was operating on federal money. Yes, Rex was part of the task force.

The Dixie Mafia?
The name was invented by Rex Armisted, a former Miss. state cop., in the 1960s to describe a group a traveling criminals who had no formal organizational structure, no bosses, no hierarchy.
There never was a "real" Dixie Mafia in the sense of the Italian Mafia. No initiation, etc. It is simply a convenient name to use for some traveling crooks, some of whom work together from time to time. Armisted coined the phrase to get some federal crime fighting funds.
Some trace the Dixie Mafia back to the 1960s or 1970s, but in a sense the "group" had existed for years before that. Every town and city in the South had it's criminal element. Most towns had some illegal booze, broads or gambling. Chop shops, stolen goods and fences. Most had a local "boss" or "bosses."
Phenix City, Ala., is a good example. A lot of gambling joints, bars and whorehouses. Feasted on the soldiers across the river in Georgia. A vice center since the 1930s. Closed in in the mid 1950s. Criminals came and went. Some worked as bouncers or card dealers between scores. There were a few local bosses, but no national organized crime involvement.
All across the South you had crooks that traveled around. They would naturally meet up in the dives, whorehouses and gambling joints. They might ask the local smalltown boss about a good wheelman or someone who could hide them out. They might arrange to meet a guy they knew in prison at one of these joints in one of these towns and do a job. Then they go their separate ways.
Some Dixie Mafia types had small gangs. Some were loners. Some specialized in gambling or robbery or dope. Some were jacks-of-all-trades. Some were even part-time crooks with real businesses on the side.
A few settled down, developed political connections and became smalltime bosses in their own towns. But there never was a "boss" of the Dixie Mafia. No captain or lieutenant, no oath or ritual, no real "gang."
And no local boss ever became as big or powerful as, say, Carlos Marcello of the New Orleans mob family.
In other words, it's real. But it's not. The best way to describe the Dixie Mafia is as a network of people in related businesses, some of whom knew each other and worked together off and on, and who could provide contacts in other cities and towns and introductions to other crooks as needed.
That is more accurate than thinking of it as an actual gang or family or group or organization.
