My perception of bullying at the Carrollton High School in Carrollton, Missouri is that it has gone on for decades according to some parents and Administration. They particularly bully anyone that is an "outsider". If you did not start school in Kindergarten with the rest of the student body, you are considered an "outsider". the biggest problem in Carrollton is the fact that it is a very non-confrontational community; and, therefore it is the one that tells about the bullying that they consider a "complainer". They get very frustrated with anyone who tells. The most widely popular consequence of bullying is to find some reason the bullied student deserved the bullying. It is a very big problem there.
The second reason that it has gone on so long is that you have teacher's, staff, and school board members that all belong to the same families. If you are not distantly related to one or more members of this group, then you are free game for bullying.
I have personally dealt with this issue, and I can assure you that going to the school with any issues regarding bullying, unless you are familialy related to someone at the school, you become a complainer, and then your children suffer even more from bullying because then the students have determined that it is alright to bully that particular student. The students bully an "outsider", watch to see what the consequences will be, and when action is not taken then that child becomes free game.
It is a heartbreaking situation.
im pretty sure you already stated your opinion in another column.

The Developing Bully -

I have been reading some articles regarding this subject, and now I have more opinions to share.
Bullying, in actuality, is not a children's issue so much as it is more of an adult issue. I believe that in the early stages, a child who may be more aggressive and feel insecure seeks out the attention of the adults in his/her life in positive and negative ways. They then have learned how to manipulate the adults that they come into contact with. Once they are introduced to the school setting, they quickly learn how to manipulate their situations into either being a favored student, or a protected student. Once this is accomplished, it is easy then to always have a "one-up" against another student. For instance, when Johnny complains about being hit by Bobby, the "favored" or "protected" student turns the tables, and instantly is able to have the adult in question ask "Well, what did Johnny do first." Most teachers do not even bother with fact-finding, they want everything to be non-confrontational. They don't really want to be bothered with discipline or fact-finding because they only have so many hours in their classroom. So, instead, they try to create a level playing field. Bobby hit Johnny, so Johnny MUST have done something to deserve it.....end of story, and end of conflict. The teacher then can go about her day.
What message does that give to those two boys? What does it say to Bobby? He can hit, as long as he can create a quesiton regarding whether or not it was justified. The message Johnny got was DON'T TELL, it will only cause HIM to get negative attention. Hence, you have now created a lifelong environment where Bobby is the bully, and Johnny will become the long-suffering victim.
On the other hand, students may see that same teacher on other occasions act differently. For instance, Sally hits Susan. If the teacher's response then is to discipline Sally, stating that she does not allow hitting under any circumstances, and this time THAT is the end of the story, she has now created an environment of favoritsm. The two situations were similar, but the teacher responded one way for one student and another way for the other one. Many students will determine that there are no clear and specific rules, it is the individuals involved that make the difference.

The Developing Bully -- Part 2
The student's now contemplate these actions, and alter their personalities accordingly. Now you want to be Johnny's or Sally's friend, because as a child you saw how the events were manipulated in two situations by a single adult supevisor. The student now sees that it is not the ACT that is wrong, but that the teacher clearly has a different attitude based on the two different characters. We know that teachers are only human, and we may not know the circumstances of these two situations (the teacher was under more stress one day), but take someone only four feet tall and without the sophistication to decipher these events and you have placed in their mind a viewpoint with regard to favoritsm that says some can do no wrong, and some can do no right. It is all in whether or not that particular teacher is absolutely FAIR or BIASED.
I think that even those teacher's that swear that they are fair, aren't. I have seen and heard way too many times, particularly in Carrollton, where a large percentage of students truly feel that it is not WHAT you do that may be bad, but WHO you do it to.
Think about some of the children you know, and consider the two different outcomes if you asked one particular child to give up their seat for an adult. Some would do it without question, others may fuss somewhat, and others would be very indignant and believe that THEY should not be asked to give up their seat for someone else. Many people feel that it is the one that is indignant that comes from a prominent family and, therefore, expects to be treated better. I believe that it is the one who politely gives up their seat that should be commended. That is where "money" ends and true "class" begins.

"They think they're better than us..." is a popular phrase in Carrollton, MO that has been used for decades as justification to not like someone else and to be mean to them. Let me translate it for you.
WE are actually very insecure, easily threatened, and suspicious of other people because we know how we really are and we expect other people to be just like us, jealous, hurtful, and greedy. So, when someone comes to town that is decent, kind, and thoughtful we have to find something wrong with them. Because, God forbid, it couldn't be us.

Someone once told me taht they would rather be in a prison in Caliofornia, where he moved to, than in the nicest biggest house in Carrollton, and that was from a man that was both wealthy and successful once he left Carrollton.

yea we are a pretty mean bunch. i don't always like to be mean, but if i don't then they would be mean to me. i have thought things through a lot more now that i am in college. i regret a lot of the things i did in high school. there really are a lot of mean kids and adults in carrollton. you have to join them, otherwise they'll just pick on you too. i have been mean to people that i didn't even know just because it was cool to my friends. i'm there about three times a week now, and i really feel bad when i hear everybody bragging about all the mean things they did that week.

So the thing is now that teachers can have no contact what so ever on a personal basis...totally understandable but what about on when you are dealing with school issues, such as; what if I missed a day and I need to know an assignmen or what if I am behind and the only person (well duh) can tell me is my teacher what my assignment is what do I tell my child then? Um your screwed cause your school doesnt give a F*** about u but they give F*** about the MAP or my bad the EOC. Which I am sorry to you other parents Carrollton only cares about increasing their scores not about yor kids learning are increasing their knowledgde. Especially the Administration Department.

Oh wait my bad that is the school board that "YOU" elect that doesnt give a .... you know what about your kids, all they care about is their image and how well there schoolis doing even though we cheat and lie on the MAP test oh ooops I am not suppose to say that am I??? The truth hurts!

I'm glad "Soon to Graduate" cleared up the bully issue for me. All those years I lived in Carrollton I thought it was the sex perverts, and them that cum down from the hills and Walkendans that beat up everybody. TV is right, its tough to be smarter than a 5th grader. To bully or not to bully, THAT is the question.

carrollton is no different than any small town i would venture to guess, i have heard many similar complaints about my home town, Higginsville....right or wrong. i guess my only advice is, if you dont like the game, change the rules.

To be honest when I moved to Carrollton, I came in with a objective opinion, sure I saw the opinions in this blog, and many people(even those from Carrollton) told me the rich line of 'If you were not born here you don't belong here.' But I kept my chin high and tried to give the place a fair shot. Unfortunately, I have to say that my Name on this post says it all. I think there are a lot of good people in Carrollton, both the 'white trash' and the richie-riches. Unfortunately, there are too many people who are letting the 'head of Medusa' appear and destroy the city of what many love. Examples I would cite would be the horrible shape of the school system. I stayed on the outside and tried to understand, I would be the first to tell you that each town has their own 'touch' to the education system. The only way I would describe Carrollton's 'touch' is a caparison to Michael Jackson in bed with one of his 'children.' The school system it self is doing a good job of dismantling the entire town. The parents with children who would help the community are taking their children and running, then (with Carroll county being one of the state's easy access to welfare) the children of societies rejects are moving in. The icing on the cake is that the teachers and now even the principals don't want to stay and they are leaving. Pretty soon I think those of some self-right will be driven out and Carrollton will be left with a cesspool of rejects that could not walk and crew gum at the same time. I know people talk about the best way to solve cities like this is destroy everything and start over, I think it would be better that someone initiate a little social cleaning and clean that city out. I lived in Carrollton, for a short time in this spectrum of life, but for me it was too long, I am glad I am out and I wish all those who are standing, fighting for that piece of the world the best of luck, but this is one battle I am afraid that is lost.

Okay. That doesn't even matter that Rachael is the only senior that didn't get an award. Rachael wasn't involved in EVERYTHING else as were the other seniors. There were 7 or 8 other seniors that graduated this year and a few of them got awards for band, that Rachael wasn't eligible for. There were only about two awards that Rachael was actually eligible for and they thought that two other people were better suited for the award. It wasn't because Milly just "doesn't like" her or anything. That's just really stupid and whoever the "student" was that just posted that, I'm sure you're just mad about something dumb that Rachael did to you, but there is no need to say "yah, don't mess with Milly!" because she did NOT keep her from getting an award because she doesn't like her. So you should probably get your facts straight.

OK I may admit to being part of the bashing of the one family in the beginning, but I am getting tired of it now. Is that all anybody does on topix is bash that one family? Really? It has been four years, are we really just that desperate for anybody that we can all trash? I am older now, and not happy with some of the things I have said and done.
