When I graduated from Carroll County High School in 2004, I moved to college and havenít moved back to Carrollton since. I still call it my hometown as I believe it is important to remember your roots, not to mention the fact that there are some people there I consider very dear to me.
Throughout the past five years I have encountered many opinions about the small town of Carrollton. Itís also very easy to keep up with from hundreds of miles away because everybody knows everybody. There is one common denominator I have noticed over the years, and that is hearing the same thing over and over again about Carrollton.ďOh, isnít that the place where the bus crash happened?Ē Most recently in my life,ďOh, isnít that where they have all of those drug busts?Ē
The other day, yet again through another grapevine, did I hear about the latest and greatest drug bust in the town of Carrollton. I have a friend that works for WCPO in Cincinnati who was writing a story on the event and was curious as to why this always happens in Carrollton. His guess was as good as mine but it produced some very strong feelings.
When I tell people where I am from I donít want to be asked questions about whether or not I was ever involved in drugs. For lack of a better word, it is sometimes an embarrassment to be from a place that is only known for their drug busts. It is almost as if Carroll County takes so much great pride in the drug busts that they forget about some other issues that a town should be concerned with. Where has the concern over education gone? Are there even any rehabilitation programs in Carrollton or are you just going to keep arresting the same people without offering them some kind of help? What about the constant struggle for local businesses to stay afloat?
What Iím really trying to say is that Carrollton should find a new niche and be known for something good. Create change in the lives of those who you take pride in arresting. How do you expect people to get better when you just bring down negativity on them over and over again? What is happening there?
