Does anyone have one of these? How do you like it? Do you get good speeds? Who's your carrier? Good coverage? I'm thinking of getting one for a friend so they can have inexpensive internet.

wobbler, 1 of 2 scenarios:

-1-they'd still have to pay for and have internet access in their home (either dial-up, cable, or sattelite), THEN, a device is sold separtely to attach to their computer (if not already built-in so they could use a laptop around the house or yard without being 'hooked' to a cable...most are built-in since 5-7 years ago).

-2-now, that said, they could by the wi-fi device (or if it's already built-in to thier EXISTING computer), then 'attempt' to connect to the internet, and see if their computer 'picks-up' any wireless connections from their 'neighbors' or a close-by business (one has to 'turn-on' the 'detect-wireless-networks' option on their computer).
-2a-if they DO pick-up wireless networks close-by then these are either 'security-enabled', or NOT
-2b-if they are 'security-enabled', they won't have access to them unless they get a password from the person PAYING FOR THE INTERNET SERVICE (they could 'split-the-cost-monthly' for access).
-2c-if they are NOT security enabled, they could 'piggyback' on the servce...but this is cheating....they are getting the service for free while their neighbors pay for it and do not know someone is 'hitching' onto their service.

bottonline, wireless is OK, but slower with more users, and, storms, etc can cause interruptions, as well as other devices aroud the home.

have them get CABLE installed, even if it's just for internet...it's fast, reliable, fewer interruptions. then, they can use their laptop around the house and yard too, as (wireless' with a transmitter form the cable.

clear as mud? someone else may do a better job of explaining.

. Wob, I have a wireless router, with internet service through my cable provider. Not sure if that's what you're talking about, but I like it pretty well. You can buy the router from really any electronics store, but you have to pay monthly for the internet service.

I have a personal hotspot with my iPhone and AT&T. I can connect with my laptop and iPad to the personal hotspot. However, they made me bump up my cellular data package which was about $20 more a month than what I was paying. I think I have 5 Gig of data a month. If you go over that amount, then you pay for the extra data (this could accudently get expensive if you aren't paying attention). I would check the package. Is this what you were referring to? I think you ate pretty tech savvy based on your background you've mentioned so I was thinking you meant the wireless phone rate versus just Internet at home with a wireless router. Let me know if I was wrong.

The only reason I did the hotspot was for more flexibility with my work when I'm not at home and need to remain connected.

I enjoy hacking into other people's WiFi, not because I am bad, just because I can.

If people would change the password on their routers from the factory default to something hardened, the Patricks of the world wouldn't be able to hack into them.

And a hardened password is not your birthday, your wedding anniversary, or 1234. Just sayin'. One of my favorite hardened passwords was C9wB0y83bOP.

FYI, I don't use that one anymore. Got over CowboyBebop.

C'mon Wobbler, I thought you had a higher regard for me. Limiting me to factory defaults, sheesh.
Is WEP really that secure? Is it? Really?
Can I give everyone a tip?
Don't use broadcast, it makes it waaaaaay too easy and you can always give your buds your name.
Just a little friendly advise from your friend.

Ok ok wobbler, your pattern makes sense except I cannot get one integer on "cowboy bebop"

The first O in cowboy is coded as a "9" yet the last O in "bop" remains an "O" and the "O" in boy becomes an "0".
Please explain your line of thought in this coding process since you no longer use this.
Was it random or is there more to this?

Never use the same character twice in a password. 9 looks enough like an O to be useful in a pattern recognition password, like this one. Plus it will frustrate the hackers of the world who only look for surface likenesses, not pattern recognition.

Just like using 8 for B, although that one's pretty obvious.

And of course WEP isn't secure. Nothing's secure that can be thought up by a human! But people can make it more secure by changing the default to something hardened, and then changing that every 3 months or so.

Oh, and never follow a discernable pattern, like upper case then a number then lower case then symbol, repeat. Mix it up and be completely random about it.

C9wB0y83bOP didn't really follow this rule, since I repeated the upper case number lower case in the first two segments (C9wB0y), but then I randomized all to hell with 83bOP.

We used to sit around in the server room coming up with passwords, then seeing if we could crack them. Good times, good times.
