I think we were a lot better off before Wal-Mart moved in. Of course I think most of small town America was better off before the big box stores came along. We had small locally owned businesses and you knew who you were doing business with and where most of your products came from. Also most of our goods were made here in the good ole U.S.A. Wal-Mart used to pride itself on providing American goods, but now almost everything is made in China. We have ruined this country with greed and commericalism.

I remember when there was no such thing as Wal-Mart. You went to Sears for clothes, the hardware store for tools and building paint, the lumber yard for wood, the grocery store for groceries, the feed store for animal feed and vegetable seeds. It was a better way to do it, and I don't think it was more expensive at the time, because there were no "low price leaders" asking ridiculously low prices because they were buying in million lot numbers.

I miss those days.

I can remember when we went to town on Saturday, and it was the highlife of the week.
We didn't just jump in the car and run to the store every evening.

I also remember a time when people shopped in their clothes and not in their PJ's.

Seriously though I miss places like the local dime store, the corner bakery, going to Garrets and sitting at the soda fountain. Hanging out at Tasty Freeze drinking a milkshake with my grandfather. I miss stores like Thirftown that allowed you to run a tab if you didn't have the money to buy your groceries until payday. Unfortunately those days seem to be gone and I doubt they'll ever come back.

I remember getting all dressed up with a petticoat and gloves to go to Rich's in downtown Atlanta. It was an event. You also got all dressed up to go to a movie -- you didn't just schlep out in jeans and a tee shirt like everyone does now.

I don't shop at Wal-Mart. They mistreat their employees, don't provide a living wage or decent benefits, and they don't sell only American-made goods. I remember when Sam Walton still ran the place, it was a lot better than it is now.

I buy groceries ONLY at Ingles, buy clothes online from anywhere but Wally World, and get my hardware and stuff from Home Depot if the local hardware store doesn't have it.

Now Wob, just the other day you posted a comment on Topix about something you saw in Walmart. I started to make a comment about it since you always say you NEVER shop at Walmart but I left it alone. But...here you are again saying you NEVER shop at Walmart when in that post you obviously do or did.

The last time I looked, Ingles didn't sell only made in America goods either or Home Depot. Where do you think 99% of the produce at Ingles comes from? Read your labels Wob. Do you make sure your clothes you buy online ARE made in America? If you are buying from a common retailer on line, their clothes are made in the same places Walmarts come from. Now if you ARE reading labels and ONLY buying made in America, good for you. It is just hard to find goods like that at any retailer now. Everybody downs Walmart but seems to be unbeknowest of the other retailers selling the same goods just at higher prices. I am a label reader, I see this every where.

Walmart has just become like every other business in this nation, it is all about the money. Ingles doesn't pay a living wage, nor does Home Depot nor does those online retailers you buy from. AND they all treat their employees the same as Walmart does. I know, I know people who either work at these places now, or have. AND none of them offer decent benefits.

Your post applies to ALL retailers, not just Walmart. Just saying.

Then let me be more specific -- I don't BUY anything at Walmart. I go in there with other people who insist on giving them money, but I personally do NOT give them money.

And when I buy stuff, I look at the label (what a concept) and make sure I buy American.

Walmart is more blatant about the employee mistreatment, not to mention they run the mom & pop stores out of business. You know, the mom & pop stores that bring the sense of community to a small town.

Don't like 'em, never will, and they DON'T get my money.

Places like Ingles and Home Depot AND online retailers also ruined the Mom and Pop business. You are shopping with them, not the Mom and Pops. Just saying. Think beyond blaming Walmart Wob and you will see all the big business ruined the Mom and Pops with our help.

Lol! I find it funny when people say I won't shop at Walmart. Then run into them at Walmart later. Walmart exists because they fulfill a consumer need-at a fair price. Target, home depot, lowes the list goes on and on sell china made products. Why? Because that is where OUR manufacturing has moved to. Lets be honest! The real blame goes to unions holding employers hostage for higher wages than the marketplace can sustain. Competitive markets means employers must have the freedom to adjust their business practices to stay viable. Our outrageous tax structure is another reason. And let's not forget about just plain GREED. Some American companies who could compete here and be profitable, thanks to non union labor, forget about the country in which supported their success in their beginning. So they move their manufacturing overseas (where they really pay poverty wages) to increase their profits.. Walmart forces No one to work there ! They provide jobs and consumer goods for us all! See you Walmart on one of my 5 or 6 weekly trips hypocrites

i was a teamster for 12 yrs and I saw firsthand as we lost market share because my employer could no longer compete with its competition due directly to very high wages and Cadillac ins. & pension plans. So 50% of employees were laid off due to lost work. Now I'm self employed & no longer associated with that type of dinosaur business model. And might I add make more money now with a great sense of satisfaction. So get up on that one time.
