<quoted text>Ok, but I think that a lack of education compounded the situation Joey was in. Homicide is much higher in uneducated folks.
Thank GOD we have you on the force.

one good thing-the person won't be back in the penal system ever again

Joey was never in the penal system. Joe Vanstavern was. He was released and then committed murder and is back in the system.

Not certain - but I think yes he did.
I can't remember what I read about that. In either case if his dad did commit suicide or died from a broken heart; all that has come from any of this is tragedy and pain.

I haven't visited here in awhile. I can see that I haven't missed too much or at least not anything worth reading. Thank you to RCA. That was about the only worthwhile comment I read.
What all of you need to remember is no matter what the issues were, 2 families are suffering great losses because of it all.
Whether any of us agree or disagrees or just agrees to disagree doesn't change any of what has happened. What we can do is try to think about what we say & do before we do it. Think about what it might feel like to be on the receiving end of our actions.

You shouldn't speak of things when you have no information. Joey's family is one of the most loving, caring and supportive families I have ever known. They were always there for Joey no matter what. But if you have ever dealt with anyone who has an addiction you know that one of the first things that has to happen is the person has to admit to having a problem. You can't always reach them; they won't let you in. There have been so many times I ask myself why didn't Joey just ask me for help. I would have done everything in my power to do whatever was needed. Understand that this tragedy was not only about the drugs, there were other things going on that were not released to the press.

I sure send my sympathy,I do not know these folks,Yet this still saddens me.I am a grandmother,And drugs are the downfall of many,I worry so about my grandchildren,And hope and pray that they never get into drugs,I think the devil is using drugs to steal our young people away. And as someone who has gone through divorse. That can be a terrable ordeal also.My prayers are with all the ones who will be hurt by this.I am so sorry to hear about this happening.

They both tested positive for drugs.

You really don't think that. Do you really think his mom or dad would just let him die? Maybe a little intervention from Joe's family would stop this.

Sometimes family members do not want to be involved,And they just stay away from the whole scene. When Alcohol or drugs are involved,Since both are mind alltering drugs. Some family members avoid contact.I'm sure if the family would have known this was going to happen. They would have tried to intervene,You know when folks are adults it is harder to tell even your kids what to do.If folks have an addiction. That is what they think about,And not much else.I am sorry for them all,This probable would not have happened at all.

This tragedy probable would not have happened,If these two men were not on mind alltering substances. What a pity all these lifes distroyed in an instant. One is dead and the other will probable never get over this mentally. And what about the two ladies who witnessed all this.Their lifes are forever changed. This is very very sad for all.

Even though it has been many years since this tragedy I still remember seeing Joe's house on the news and as soon as the reporter said there had been a man shot I started crying because I knew in my gut it was Joey because of the history between these two men. I started crying before his name was ever said. I met Joey before any involvement with drugs and I can tell you first hand he was a terrific guy. Always had a shoulder to cry on or a hug to share. And through the years I didn't see him as often and when I did he seemed ok, but there were rumors of prescription drug use because of the pain he had after a forklift accident. That is really irrelevant. He was a good guy that didn't deserve to die. And as far as the theft, I also had heard that he was there recovering car parts that had belonged to him not stealing from Joe. So sad I still cry today when I think about how the world will never see Joey's sweet smile again.

I just read this for the first time online about my cousin Joey.
It's awful, I just don't feel what happened was right.

And as stated below ,"by The Facts: Vanstavern was ordered to serve life plus 5 years, which is overkill if you ask me, but that's the way the
ball bounces. I feel for both families, and my thoughts and prayers go out to them both."

I don't feel sorry at all for Vanstavern.
OverKill Really...? Joey should still be alive today.
I feel sorry for all of us who cared about Joey.
I do know he didn't deserve to be murdered,"meaning he was not a
murderer, terroristic type, pedohile, rapist,or someone that would hurt another."

And as you stated,"evidence suggests he was in a crouching position in a corner unarmed,"
I say, "It's not a gun fight unless both men have a gun," but Joey was not like that.

I do know that Joey and Vanstavern's wife would hang out together. When I was visiting my Grandma, I would see her come showing up and would hear
them occasionally and it sometimes Sounded Like they were having fun.

The facts wrote:
<quoted text> What are the facts? Where should I start? Well, first of all Vanstavern was on parole for drug charges(trafficing meth)not weapon charges as it has been said. Altough he was not residing at the home at the time of the shooting, he did still own the house and property. Toxicology results for both men were positive for meth, so this talk about Rush being an angel is crazy. He was most certainly a druggie, and a notorious thief. It was not an act of self defense, since forensic evidence suggests that Rush was in a crouching position when he was shot, and was also unarmed.

I dated Joey for several years. He was a good man. A loving man. He loved my 2 sons like his own. He made a bad choice... drugs. Joey hated arguing. He didnt deserve to die. Being caught making a bad choice because of his addiction was not worth his life.
