I am from Big Wells, I have been part of this community for about 27 years off n on. My Parents and my In-Laws have lived in Big Wells most of their lives.
Well it does not matter how the High School was closed down, but Carrizo has been after Big Wells since 1955. In the 90's they moved they took 7th & 8th. Now they have voted to take 5th & 6th. And we all know that they will also move 2nd - 4th, and finally take pre-k, k, and 1st.
Many of you in Carrizo feel that our (Big Wells) children are taking away from your children. Well I ask then let us (Big Wells) DETACH from the CSCISD. Let us make our very own School District. This way we won't take away from your children. I ask those 4 board members to vote for a detachment from CSCISD. I challenge you Dr. Alaniz, Mr. Garza, Mr Rodriguez, and Mrs McDaniels. Put it on the June 17th Agenda, or explain to the Citizens of Carrizo why you won't do it.
I can tell you, why, you need our (Big Wells)$ 7 million Tax Dollars. Oh, is not from property tax, but from Gas, Oil, & Mineral Tax. You claim that it cost $10,000. per child to educate them. Well let's do the math $7 million divided by 250 Big Wells Students would $28,000.00 per child. We would be able to offer higher salaries to teachers, meaning a better pool of teachers to choose from. Then I bet the Carrizo teacher would be the 1st to apply in Big Wells.
So Carrizo We don't need you, So vote to DETACH Big Wells From your School District, PLEASE DO IT !

They refuse to admit the truth is what happened. Bottom line is that Big Wells has gotten to a point where a school district for them is not feasalbe. No matter what they say or presume to collect in taxes. TEA shut them down not Carrizo but Carrizo can and should shut down Carrizo's Elementary in Big Wells.

Hey BW and Cheto!!!!
reopen your schools!!! All the time you waste blaming CS, you could have opened your school's. Get a superintendant, get the buildings going, get the buses!!! What is keeping you from all of this? You are all so smart and educated and know EVERYTHING, then DO IT!

Yea, Big Wells and Asherton are always against Carrizo! They never support Carrizo, but they all come here to work and do their shopping cuz where else would they go to do it????????? So instead of always putting Carrizo down you should be glad that Carrizo is here for "you!!!!!" Why did your towns go down?????? And thank god we are still here!!!!!! For example: the court house is full of employees from Asherton.

You are so right! Why is BW and Asherton always hating on Carrizo. What are you showing our kids! My son for example has many friends from Cheto and they would never have met, if they had not been a part of this school! They are the very best of friends, and you have to admit that they have learned more being here and united. Get rid of all that pride before it kills you!!! Think of what is important. You children!

Im from Big Wells but truthfully i think it might be a good thing to take the older grades to carrizo cause they do have better things for the students to do I went to school in carrizo well i started in big wells but went to carrizo after a while. But I think that they should leave the little kids here because i dont think they should be on the bus with the older ones. But as for people putting down Carrizo there not putting down the town just the school district. But I think both towns are great Big Wells might be small and not have much but thats the best part about it its small. So dont say that big wells education sucks if you never been to school here. Just to put it out there I did not go to Carrizo school because of the education in Big Wells I went for personal reasons I just wanted to say that because i know someone was going to come back with something on that.

I totally agree. Little kids shouldn't be on a bus for 30 minutes every morning.

Big Wells and Asherton do not put Carrizo Springs down. It is part of the tri-city area but keep in mind that our purchases at Carrizo Springs' stores help your economy. We can shop elsewhere. Crystal City is just as close to Big Wells as Carrizo Springs. We also have local businesses here ( a restaurant, 2 convenience stores, 2 bars, Oil related businesses, hardware store, and a Church Bingo business). When we have someone open a grocery store, you'll see us even less. The cost of fuel can give Big Wells residents an incentive to shop locally.

its true alot of people from cheto work in carrizo cause you know who has education.if carrizo is part of asherton why dont they get the elementary students t shirts like they give carrizo elem at the beginning of the year why do we the parents have to buy our own for the kids when carrizo isd is getting the money is it cause the superintendent has to be getting her raise higher and higher and wont be able to afford what she has then. dr alaniz doesnt even have kids in the carrizo isd and claudia why is she so concerned about closing down the schools maybe so she cant get more money so she can get off medicaid .also when kids from cheto go play out of town games get a bus to bring the kids to the post office and we the parents can pick them up here in cheto instead of oing all the way to carrizo at 1 or 2 in the morning you the school is getting all that money from the schools if you want us to help you , you guys have to help us to dont just think about youll we are part of you guys to cause some of the parents dont have the oppurtinity to pick up their kids after the games late at night all the way to carrizo

I graduated in 1985 from the Old High School (Jr. High). If I recall Right we were a 4 AAAA School, meaning higher enrollment. Now we are 3 AAA and "AGREE" stated that where we they fit, in the Jr. High. Are enrollment is lower they would fit.

My question is by removing the 5th and 6th grades from Big Wells, How will CSCISD save money in Big Wells When they will only move 2 teachers to Carrizo. And they will still have to operate the building the same (light, gas, water, jantorial, maintance, caferteria, clerk priciple, secretary, and the list goes on and on. So how are they going to save 1.3 million dollars. Please will one of the 4 Board Members explain, or you Ricky, oh excuse me I mean Dr. Alaniz!

I really would like to hear or see you pull a rabbit out the hat.

And for those of you that don't know Big Wells did not send their chikldren to Carrizo by choice. Back in the 90's CSCISD took the 7th & 8th to Carrizo with promises of the student be able to get a better education, and participate in Ex- Curricular Activities. But the buses where hardly provided, or the coaches would complain to the students making them feel as if they were a burden.

It is very sad to say that the district cares more about Ex Curricular Activities, than our children education, yes even Carrizo's students. Yea, Johnny your not going to like this but it is the truth. Look at the budget our district spends over a million dollars a year in the Ex Curricular Activities (ECA). And that not including maintainace, or transportation. They spend more on (ECA) than on resources, it is in the budget, also $700,000.00 on the track and field. What good is it too have such a nice place for the pride of the Wild Cats if our students are not getting an education. In the past 3 years the J.V., Freshmen, 7th & 8th grade teams have not done well after the 1st report card grades come out. Even too shut down the teams. What pride is in that? I also ask the local colleges (SWTJC, LCC, & SAC) how many Graduates from Carrizo Springs High take remeidial courses in college? You will not like what you see.

You would have been better off taking both schools, and ALL the grades, not just 5th & 6th.
Big Wells will recover from this, since it was a wake up call for many. I see the Glass Half Full, Not Half Empty. Yes, Big Wells has alot of thinking and work ahead of them, but we are not going to pay the for the Boards actions, Carrizo will since you have NO choice, as we do !

All very good points but I feel that kids need good extra curricular activities in order to do well in other parts of life. So I support the use of money on ECAs.
And, you talk about the number of kids taking remedial college classes at LCC, SAC, and SWTJC, well I wouldn't be surprised. The smartest kids don't go to community colleges (this isn't to say that if you went to a community college you aren't intelligent, obviously there are always circumstances such as finances and distance that prevent you from going some place better).
AND community colleges exist for those reasons, to provide a base education for people not ready to jump into a 4 year college. The average SAT score for CSHS is 880, that's very far below national average. Carrizo may think that we're doing amazing by our percentages of kids going to college. I remember at scholarship night when I graduated they said something like 70% of kids were going to college. A HUGE majority of this were kids going to TAMIU, TAMUK, TAMUCC, UTSA, SWTJC etc. This is fine because these students are most often first generation college students. They have to start somewhere. But before long we need more and more kids going to bigger and better institutions for higher education. When professors find out where I'm from they say, "You came from there??" and I know I'm not the only one to experience that. Carrizo just needs to have pride and better leaders.
So I do agree that we need more pride in our academics, I just don't now exactly how to do it.

Yes, community colleges are for base education before attending a 4 year college. But not to get a High School Education, that is what remedial clasess are. My sister attended college at SAC and her roommate attended UTSA, her room mate was taking remedial classes at UTSA. So even students attending those places you mentioned are teaching some of our students what they should have learned in High School. I bet that the district would change their ways if the colleges came back and charge the district for doing their job to give our children a base education. I feel that the district is frauding the government (WE THE TAX PAYERS), since they are paying the district for something we are not getting! Why would we expect any lesser, if a we pay for a service we expect to get that service rendered. The same goes for the district, we pay for an education for our children, so our children should get an education. All our children not just 10 to 20 percent.
