It most certainly is an achievement. We always celebrate achievements in sub-categories. Look at the Miss America contest. We celebrate Miss Lehigh Valley, before the Miss PA contest. And we celebrate the Miss PA, before the Miss Americas contest. If neither, Miss LV or Miss PA, win Miss America, are there earlier achievements void???
We also do it in sports. We give a gold medal to the winners in the District tournament before they go the State tournament. If they donít win Stateís is the District title void???
I understand your point of view and in life you get judged against ALL your peers. But that does not discount the fact that you can compete in a small group as well. Not every high school valedictorian gets accepted into their first choice of College. That does not mean he/she was not the smartest person in his/her high school.
I don't want to be argumentative, but... you're comparing apples and oranges. Using your examples: If all the Latinas only competed against Latinas for Ms. Pa, how would their achievement compare to the women who competed and won against all races/colors/nationalities? Wouldn't it be better if Miss USA was the best of ALL women competing? That was my point. I could use your other examples also, but there is no need to make this post longer than it has to be. Like I said, they should be proud of their achievements, but... unless they were compared to ALL students, people are not going to be able to give them all the credit that's due to them. Those 11 students should want to be compared against ALL students statewide instead of a small sub-group.

You compare apples to oranges. No one discriminates against Miss New Jersey or a district-level athlete. By your examples, they should have grouped the best students by grade or by school.

While I do agree that it is an achievement to be commended, I don't see why it needs to be grouped like this, especially when something like race is used to classify that group. Top achievers by school, grade, district, regional area makes more sense than skin color or ethnic background.

Oh for goodness sakes, quit whining. Hispanics do something good, and you people are still bashing them.
It's not bashing. It's pointing out a very obvious fact.
If there was an award called :"Outstanding Caucasian Students",you better believe that LaRazza,MALDef,Lulac and the Pureto Rocan Legal and Educational Defense fund as well as NAACP,et all would be up in arms for "excluding" their ethnic groups.
Heaven Forbid white people honor their own. That would be protested and screamed about.
It's only ok if your any ethnic group that is NON-WHITE to give honors or awards exclusively to people in your group.

You know what I am so tired of people bashing Latinos and PR's. People on here will whine that they are nothing but Hud living, baby producing, food stamp abusing individuals and now that these young people are doing good and trying to make something for themselves you once again bash them - WHAT DO YOU WANT? Stop being so close minded and appreciate Life for Life.
Congrats to all of the nominees and winners. Here is to your great success in the future!

Here's what I don't get.Other races say that they were held back, over looked by white men.
So to rectify the situation, there was the civil rights act passed in the early 1960 to assure that no one would be relegated to the back of the bus.
Then, all these SPECIAL interest groups start appearing.
I'm not going to get into the too numerous to count organizations that cater exclusively to one race over all others.
Look at certain award shows on TV.
some EXCLUDE all other races, while celebrating only their own culture.
I thought the idea of civil rights,MLK was so EVERYBODY who wanted to participate could be free to join any group.
When is that wonderful day going to come when we all can just be AMERICANS without this Latino or that African American or an Asian American?

When is it going to end?? When people like the ones that post on this forum stop being racist pigs and realize that GOD CREATED ALL MEN EQUAL..And maybe when they stop to think that all races have good and bad..And maybe just maybe one day they will realize that not everyone in a certain race or Nationality are bad!!!!!

Agreed - God created all men equal. And our schools extend the equal OPPORTUNITY to succeed to all students. However, equality of opportunity does not guarantee equality of outcome. Students of all races can succeed if they are willing to put in the work required to do so.

I applaud the achievement of these students and I look forward to the day when it won't be front page news that they did so.

These awards are more racist than any post I have ever seen on these forums. The students involved should be ashamed of their "accomplishment" of being used for racist purposes. I would be ashamed if anyone used my name in a racist way.

Over 90 percent of the serial Killers are white males. I can say a statement like that and be equally as racist of some of these people here, but the bottom line is, most Hispanic are good people as are most whites. The color of your skin doesn't infect your brain. This was indeed proven by science. My red car don't run faster then my beige car. Treat each person as a person and don't group them in a category. Sad when it is done this way

<quoted text>Well said! I'm so sick of something only being said everytime there is a hispanic involved. Even when they do something good these people STILL HAVE SOMETHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT! It is disgusting and uncalled for. Everytime I see a white person molesting or raping or even robbing a bank there maybe 1 or 2 comments posted, You people have nothing to say then but let it be a hispanic and your all over it like fly's on ****. If Allentown disgust you then why do you choose to live here and complain, MOVE!!! The market is great to buy a house in Wisconsin!!! Move and you won't have to deal with it no more! Gosh! You people make me sick!

Your argument is invalid. The "sub categories" you cite are for regional winners. Miss LV, Miss Pa., and Miss USA don't give awards based upon ethnicity, nor should they. Same goes for the sport categories you cited. Regional, in order to advance to the next level.
Based on your argument, we should be see an award for the "Best Looking Asian Woman" in the Miss USA contest. Or, perhaps the "Best African-American High Jumper" in the PIAA Track Finals.

I don't think they going to have a white award, but I do know they make 15 percent more salary for doing the same exact job with the same education. Hopefully this will make up for not having their own award. Yes white woman earn less then white males, This is probably the reason they have WOMEN's groups and awards?

So I guess the TOP WHITE STUDENTS will be getting specially designated awards, as well? Let's hope these young people actually DO something USEFUL with their lives - unlike their other 87% living in the Lehigh Valley.

Not sure where you get your statistics and not trying to insult you. But your statement about male/female salaries is too simplistic. The reality is that women tend to earn less due to some simple factors such as the number of hours they tend to work and their willingness to commute long distances to work. Studies have shown that men often spend more hours in the office per day where women prefer to have more personal time for family or whatever. Also, men are more likely to move jobs and accept long commutes to take new jobs that pay more. Women that take on the same hours and willingness to relocate and /or commute have been proven to earn salaries equal to men.
