Full story: Monterey County Herald

The many Vietnam draftees came from all social and financial brackets and their protests carried some weight.

Wanda Rose wrote a typical Carmel letter. Take your meds and put the crayon down, Wanda.

Joe Zoccali needs to get an education regarding geopolitics. Sounds like he must have gotten his education in the Salinas public schools.

Randy Tunnell needs to grow a pair. No big deal about the body bag.

As a drafted Vietnam Vet, I must say the letter written by Wanda Rose is right on the money. Those without military service will probably disagree, as there is no true appreciation of peace without the experience of war.

Thanks for the good letter Joe Zoccali. US presence in Afghanistan will always stir resistance. The US cannot make democracy happen nor can peace be forced upon people with occupation. The Afghan people must make those choices. We have borrowed and spent a trillion dollars on wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The prior Afghani government was quickly routed but there was nothing to fill the void. Our US created government turned out to be as corrupt as governments generally are. No surprise there. We destroyed the government in Iraq and the government we installed has evolved to be not very pro American. Who knows what will happen once we've left. All this has been done at the cost of thousands of American lives as well as tens if not hundreds of thousands of other lives and millions of refugees in addition to the trillions dollars mentioned above.

Our nation can no longer be the police force of the world and we cannot afford to spend more money on our military than do all other nations combined. We need to be shutting down overseas bases not creating more of them.
