Letters: Carmel Valley Road, Highway 1 traffic flow 'choked'

There are 3 comments on the Monterey County Herald story from Sep 6, 2010, titled Letters: Carmel Valley Road, Highway 1 traffic flow 'choked'. In it, Monterey County Herald reports that:

The government can't do anything right" is a popular sentiment these days. It is not a sentiment that we share, but the reinstallation of the "choke point" where Carmel Valley Road turns right onto Highway 1 certainly left us wondering.

Mr. Price, while you may think your unimpeded access to Highway 1 from Carmel Valley Road makes common sense, it causes a back up for everyone, locals and tourists alike, who are to your south. That means everyone who is physically south of Rio Road trying to get north, sits in a traffic jam so you can have unimpeded access. Those people are wasting just as much gas as you are, if not more, because they sit in traffic longer than you do. The rule of the road is to take turns. Why are you folks on Carmel Valley Road opposed to that?

Mr. Price - the back-up on Carmel Valley Road to Highway 1 is negligible at best. Or maybe even non-existent. The back-up ON Highway 1 extended to Monastery Beach and beyond on busy weekends while the 'no-stop' turn lane was in use.

Where this really falls apart is the "saving of thousands of gallons of fuel over the course of a year, since vehicles would no longer be stopped and idling and then having to restart and accelerate ..." argument. One still needs to stop at the stoplight on Highway 1 turning onto Carmel Valley Road. What about all that gas wastage?

And perhaps you have forgotten that there are two lanes of turning traffic onto Highway 1. There is only 1 lane of traffic south of Carmel Valley Road. There is much more idling and waiting occurring there.

BTW - I can't even remember the last time that traffic was backed up from the Carmel Valley Road/Highway 1 stoplight back to the Carmel Valley Road/Rancho Road stoplight. That's a block.

Oh, and I'm one of those Carmel Valley people who thinks that having that free-turn lane was lame.

Sorry, but the Price is WRONG!!!!!:o)

Too many wingnuts from the Valley blasting onto Hwy 1 ruined it for everone, and all you had to do was witness the traffic backed up on Hwy 1 over last Memorial Day weekend, it was like it used to be in the early 90's, and those are good old days we don't want to go back to.

Maybe Mr. Price can use the Grade next time, THE he'll appreciate how slow traffic can go while enjoyng Hwy 68!
