Grimes couple described as bullies

John Kenney's defense team sent a parade of witnesses to the stand Wednesday to depict the 74-year-old Carmel Valley man as a peaceful, nonviolent person who felt intimidated and bullied by the two neighbors he ... Full Story

Kenny knew the temperment of the Grime's, and knew that Mrs.Grimes would go off on him, and her husband, after placing the boulder on the drive blocking their access to their carport. He was provoking them to confront him, and he waited with a gun...He shot them dead.

This case could be the for runner of many more in the future. We as community dwellers are facing issues of loud music, drug dealings and drug labs with not much help or response from local law enforcement people. When you can no longer block out the loud noise and are seeing your neighborhood destroyed by these things with very little legal help, people are going to be forced to handle things in their own way. Which of course will become violence that could have been prevented.

Someone explain to me why, as a lawyer, Mel Grimes ingored not only repeated requests by Kenney's attorneys to stop trespassing but also a court issued restraining order prohibiting such trespass, which he ignored, but that the legal system is at fault for not trying "mediation"? The whole thing is tragic, but it seems like Kenney was trying to go through legal channels and those very efforts are now mocked. Of course, none of that explains why if he was afraid he opened the door and went outside with a gun instead of, yet again, calling the cops.

Kenny _knew_ the "disputed land" wasn't his. HE KNEW! And even tho' he had problems with the Grimes previously he deliberately goaded them into reacting by having the rock put on the property. Then he sat in wait for them to come home, while having his gun at hand.

Then he shot and killed two people. He deserves to be in jail for the rest of his sad life.

Ummmm maybe because he wasn't trespassing. The restraining order did not prevent the Grimes from using the easement. Perhaps Mr. Kenney should have followed the court issued restraining order himself and turn over the gun he denied having.

A judge did recommend mediation, however, Kenney's attorney preferred the idea of a boulder as a solution. Mr. Kenney did a lot of whining about no one listening to him, but he did not take the proper steps to be heard. He should have hired a surveyor if he was so convinced that was his property. Instead, he wanted to bully his way into ownership of that tiny sliver of land.

Ironic, isn't it. Mr. Kenney blames our legal system for failing to resolve his dispute with the Grimes.
Now his entire fate in the hands of that same legal system. Hmmmm...

Unless you have dealt with the planning department and the Sheriff's department with regard to an easement you do not clearly understand the situation. This is a situation that could have been prevented but neither party helped themselve out. Both are stubborn, but Kenney still has a strong arguement. What he did was wrong but he felt threatened, intimidated, and in fear of his safety.... It will be very interesting in the deliberation room.

In court records for the restraining order Kenney had the land surveyed three times and the land is his.

I want to know WHO the lawyer was that told Kenney to put a boulder behind their van!
Are you kidding me?
And WHAT FIRM does this lawyer work for so we can all avoid that kind of genius legal "advice"!

Please state all the facts his current attornays admited that the Grimes had an easement onto that property. With the easment it didn't matter who owned it by means of a survey. The people that seemed to fail Mr. Kenney were his attorneys, his real estate agent, the title company andthe Sheriffs department. In any case we are each responsible for our own actions and Mr. Kenney is the one that pulled the trigger. Manslaughter at the least.

I wonder why none of Kenney's friends or lawyers suggested to him that obsessing about neighbors being on a 4 x 10 patch of land was something he should see a therapist or doctor about, and not a lawyer. Having watched 3 people decline into dementia, it seems to me that the first sign is a latching on to an insignificant problem and making it worse. This was an insignifican problem, which seems the reason he could not get attention from the police, not that Grimes was getting special protection from authorities. And he made the situation worse by not stepping back to see the big picture and how insignificant this problem really was. That is the thing with dementia, the sufferer can not see the situation clearly. It is a shame that none of his friends or family questioned his behavior instead of supporting his right to be upset. He may have been a scared old man, but he created the problem, and none of his friends or family helped him get out of it. So if you have an older family member who is making a mountain out of a mole hill, and can't let it go, get them to a doctor before they need a lawyer, please.

Mel Grimes represented me in court "pro bono" years ago when I was a young man headed in the wrong direction. It was that act of kindness that showed me that there really are people out there who are willing to help others and it changed the way I felt about Lawyers in general. I still dont understand how someone can be waiting to attack with a gun and still be considered a "victim". The Grimes certainly did not deserve to die over a piece of land. They will be reatly missed.

I can't stand when people start defending themselves with accusations when the other couple can't respond. Bully my ass, who's dead here. I don't believe a word Kenney, says, he lied about the camera incident (probably looking for a defense for later) and these people who fall for that crap just make me sick and he definitely lied about what happened before he shot them. Wasn't he told to stay in his house, if he was so frightened for his life why didn't he just call 911 instead of going down there with a gun. The guy was upset and he just didn't care what he did or who he hurt. Who does that kind of thing, a psychopath and that's exactly what he is and he's had 70 years to perfect his condition.
