High school boys basketball: Reader's guide to semistate

http://www.usatodayhss.com/indianapolis/artic...

[An excerpt]

3A powers collide

It'll be a clash of styles as Greensburg averages 71.6 points per game and Mt. Vernon limits opponents to 41.6.

Marauders coach Steve Lynch is quick to point out Greensburg has held opponents to 46.2 points per game.

"We both guard well," Lynch said as he prepared for the 3 p.m. game at Richmond High School. "We don't score quite as well. Both teams have good guard play, decent size and strength. I think we match up well together."

The Pirates are led by juniors Bryant McIntosh and Sean Sellers. McIntosh has committed to Indiana State. Sellers and 6-8 sophomore Ryan Welage are also considered Division I prospects.

Class 3A is only class with four top-10 teams left. The other semistate features No. 3 Andrean (22-3) vs. No. 7 Fort Wayne Concordia (22-4) at Huntington North.

Tall challenge

Speedway must deal with Linton-Stockton's imposing front line of 6-8 Austin Karazsia, 6-5 Dess Fougerousse and 6-4 Jackson Bohnert.

Speedway will counter with 6-4 Anthony Jones and 6-3 Justin Brent when the Sparkplugs (21-4) face 2A No. 10 Linton-Stockton (23-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Richmond Semistate.

"It will put an emphasis on rebounding for us," Speedway coach Chuck Bennett said. "They've not attempted a lot of 3-pointers so you can tell their strategy is to get the ball inside and use their size to their advantage. It should be a battle of contrasting styles definitely."

The Sparkplugs prefer an up-tempo attack.

State-ranked #2 Greensburg REALLY IS positioned to take on ALL comers.

Greensburg beat #5 Evansville Bosse.

Greensburg beat #4 Brownstown Central.

Greensburg plays #1 Mount Vernon tomorrow.

Greensburg could play #3 Andrean next week.

It doesn't get any better than this. Its the stuff by which a real champion is made.

I notice that on Greensburg's roster is a 6'-6" junior, Tom Lawrence. I don't recall seeing him play last weekend. What is the prospect of getting his heigth into the line-up against Mount Vernon?

Already go 6 7 and 6 8 on front line. Best ball handler is 6 3/6 4. There's plenty of size along with the talent on the floor. Maybe will make a decent backup next year with some hard work in the off season. Starting five is all back next year.

Good luck, Pirates.

For those who stay home, might I suggest to watch the video while listening to the WTRE broadcast?...

Elswhere in the state.... FW Condordia rallys

http://www.journalgazette.net/article/2013031...

[An excerpt]

A first-quarter deficit got the Fort Wayne Concordia boys basketball team down early, but it wasn't something the Cadets couldn't overcome in a 68-63 overtime win against Andrean in a Class 3A semistate Saturday.

Concordia fell behind 13-4 in the first quarter at Huntington North, but rallied and eventually got the lead, 19-17, in the second.[...] Then, Andrean outscored Condordia 17-5 in the third and led by eight, 50-42, midway through the fourth. Again, Concordia rallied and won the game in overtime.

Andrean shot 22 of 43 (51 percent) from the field, including 10 of 17 (59 percent) in the first half but also committed 19 turnovers. Concordia did it on defense by constantly switching from man-to-man to zone to a trap.

Though #3 went down yesterday, its still the stuff of real champions!

Greensburg beat #8 Batesville.
Greensburg beat #5 Evansville Bosse.
Greensburg beat #4 Brownstown Central.
Greensburg beat #1 Mount Vernon.
Greenburg faces #7 Fort Wayne Concordia for the state championship.

A perk of winning is that the reigning champion's banner will fly from a flag pole at the Basketball Hall of Fame in New Castle until the next tournament in 2014, and a new champion has won.

Concordia can throw whatever defense they want to at the Pirates. With McIntosh running the show, nothing is going to stop Greensburg from getting the shots they want to get.

I prefer to believe that Coach Meyer is running the "show" and the 12 pirates are playing as a 'team".

They are playing great team basketball, but having potentially 3 D1 players definitely helps. That said, McIntosh can get wherever he wants on the court.

Summer AAU ball has made a big difference in skill development. Steve McCammon ('66) had ball-handling ability, but things were different back then. AAU wasn't prevalent. Regardless, four people went on to play Division I.

Why is it that Macy Holdsworth was EIAC all-conference his freshment year (with Sellers), but isn't spoken of highly? I'd really hate to think that his star has fallen. Rather, I think he is largely overlooked because of others' court presence.

As for Collin Rigney ... the Pirates would have had a rougher time of getting by Mount Vernon without his ability to shoot over their zone defense. He really opened the game in the third quarter. But the shot I'll remember most is the one in the first quarter that bounced back and forth inside the rim, and came out. The ball did everything but fall in the cylinder. He couldn't have done it any better, but it just wasn't to be.

I didn't mean that disrespectfully. I meant, as a point guard, he runs the show. His 10 assists vs. Mt. Vernon Saturday proves that.

I may be a bit biased but I don't really think Greensburg deserves its "day in the sun" and I hope Batesville can win another sectional tonight. It should be a great game. I just know if you look at character of players and, more importantly, the program - Batesville definitely comes out on top. We have a group of boys born and raised in Batesville, no recruitment, good kids who work hard.
Let the battle begin...
Didn't batesville have a 6'8" player move in from Connersville last year. He was a very solid player. To question the character of the Pirates players and coaching staff is one of the most uneducated things that can be said of the Greensburg basketball program. Stacey Meyer and staff are coaching a better group of young men than they are basketball players, and that is saying something since they will be playing for a state crown on Saturday. Hopefully, Batesville fans will be there in their blue and white rooting for a team from the EIAC to bring home a title. I can guarantee that I was rooting for B'ville during your title run.

As for Greensburg, anything less than a state championship will fail to impress the Indianapolis Star. At stake are not only the championship, but the college recruitments of four players and a serious run at the nomination of Indiana's Mr. Basketball in the next year or two. A state championship might also be relayed into a coaching position for the Indiana All-Stars this summer.

Of course, the Indianapolis Star is going to blow the horns of Indianapolis players and coaches in its paper. In military terms, a Greensburg state championship will equate to an "occupation by force." Isn't it time that Greensburg have its day in the sun?
When I wrote the above, I completely forgot that Indiana has a junior class all-star system, as well as its senior class all-star team that plays Kentucky in June.

For now, let's concentrate on Saturday and hope the Pirates bring home a chamionship and the Arthur L. Trester Award.

I heard (didnt see them myself) batesville's team was in the mount Vernon student section at semi state. That is some class. Batesville's coach always has a "pop shot" at Greensburg after each game on WRBI. You dont hear that out of Stacy. Sorry, Batesville that Your "recruit" left for a better program. Greensburg runs a better program than Batesville and has the upper hand in the coaching department. GO PIRATES!!!
