It should come as no surprise when the remainder of the state of Illinois looks down its nose long and hard at this ridiculous little sleeping villiage as, "The Land That Time Forgot". Most of it's denizens still exist chronologically in the 40's and 50's of America's long forgotton past. The only young people who remain are those who haven't got the means to exercise their God-given sense to leave.
Even it's Topix forums require a spoon fed period of months on end to see a new subject or topic arise. What's wrong? Nothing to say or no point in saying it? Actually, a drastic time-lag and a resistance to a changing world are the culprits. The town fathers outlive their usefulness by decades because if they die there's no one to replace them, so they linger on intolerably preserving their antiquated vision of the status quo. Can anything BE more wrong?
It's very possible that the only tenuous grasp Okawville has on the rest of the country is that an Interstate just happened to pass nearby. Otherwise, the moss and the overgrowth that is "felt" and not "seen" in this hazy little backwater would also be "seen" as well as "felt".
This writer has always believed that the best thing to do with something that's dead is to bury it. But a reluctance to attend one's own funeral is a selective phenomena known as "Zombieism" and can be cruelly destructive to the psyche of unfortunate children and young people who are involuntarily trapped within the eerie undead nightmare of others. I say- "LET THE CHILDREN GO!!!" Send them to living relatives in other worlds, or at least give them a hobo sak with a loaf of bread and point their feet towards civilization!!! It's the only decent thing to do.
