I was an attendee at a benefit dinner this past Saturday for Deputy Kelly Calicoat, and his wife, Nadine, who is suffering from cancer. The benefit was to help raise money to assist these newlyweds in medical bills and their trips back and forth to Lubbock for treatments.

I was disgusted to note that, with exception of four deputies, and the three reserve units available for "security," NO ONE from Eddy County bothered to make an appearance to support this officer and his wife. Sheriff Mendoza and Undersheriff Waller were conspicuously absent, as were all of Deputy Calicoat's commanding officers, Sergeants, Lieutenants, and Captains. Surely ONE of these men could have taken time out of their busy schedule to support their officer. An officer who has been active in DWI reduction in our county, and who taught my children in the D.A.R.E. program.

His lovely wife was diagnosed earlier this year with the cancer, and the aggressive treatments have taken their toll on both.

I have never been so ashamed of the Eddy County Sheriff's Department as I am right now.

As mercenary as it sounds, you'd think that the Sheriff would have at least dragged himself there for show, as this is an election year.

SHAME ON YOU, Eddy County Sheriff's Office. It IS, indeed, time for a change in this department.

That's pretty low. I wouldn't want an enemy treated that poorly... let alone a friend and trusted co-worker.

There was a facebook comment about this yesterday I think. I wanted to say something, but guess I just didn't have the balls to until someone else did. I was disgusted!!!!! The sheer audacity for the entire ECSO admin to just turn their backs on Deputy Calicoat hurt my heart. Good to see they just don't give a crap....probably working on the election so the "good-ole boy" syndrome that has plagued this department for years can continue. I was on the proverbial fence, but Scott London now has my vote.

Please don't turn this into a campaign issue. Scott London gives idiots a bad name and has no business as sheriff. Now that's done I will say that I heard first hand accounts of the shindig saturday night and I am also thoroughly disgusted with the leaders of the sheriffs department. At the very least, they could have made a 30 minute appearance to shake some hands and show some support. What a shame. That Calicote dude is a real stand up guy in my book. He's a good cop and has gotten the shaft on several occassions over the years. Captains Sergeants Lieutenants Chief and Sheriff should all publicly apologize to him for this one.

ECSO should be ashamed of themselves! Throughout this horrible ordeal that Kelly has been going thru, very few officers and/or admin have even contacted him to show their support. In my opinion, they are a bunch of low lifes!!

True. I didn't post this originally to make a campaign issue out of it. I just meant that you'd THINK, in a year when the Sheriff really wants to look good, he'd show a little public support for one of his most dedicated officers, who is going through his own personal hell. Instead, the entire administration showed that they care little for the officers who risk their lives serving this county under their direction, and they show that they really don't care what anyone thinks. Are they that sure of a win?

Regardless, The original point was that I, and apparently many others, are shocked and disgusted at the lack of support shown. If it leads to a change in administration, be it better or worse, it's time for a change.

Kelly is probably one of the best officers the ECSO has and this had to be a slap in the face to both he and Nadine. I would have expected this treatment from Waller (he is too good to associate with the little people in town), but I actually thought Ernie was a better man. I agree with OneOfMany, it may definitely be time for a change in administration at the ECSO. Meanwhile, please keep Kelly and Nadine in your thoughts and prayers.

What else is new? If you are not in a clique around here, you get phoney smiles and support, but when the chips are down, you get nothing. EVERYONE in Carlsbad is like this. It's pathetic. You try to help them, and they don't appreciate it.

Everyone is Carlsbad is NOT like this. There were a lot of donations by people for the silent auction, and it was not junk. I know it was appreciated by both Kelly and Nadine If you were around when little Sammy went missing, a large portion of Carlsbad showed up to search for this little guy. I know the family of this little boy was appreciative to all who tried to help. I have always, and will continue to believe that you get back what you give. Try it sometime and you may be surprised.

Embarrassed by the lack of compassion at my former bosses. As for the current administration well it is what it is. Shameful!

Kelly worked diligently for the department, the county and I empathize with his loss. This treatment is unforgivable and therefore I will give support to neither side due to this.

It amuses me that you're surprised. There are only two reasons why policemen would band together:
1) Union
2) To cover up each other's fyukk-yps.

Think about it: Each and every day as police encounter people, it is either an adversarial meeting on the side of the road, or one where the complaintant is loathed to be ripped off and have to file a complaint in front of someone wearing a uniform and sporting bad cologne -and who will invariably botch up the damned police report anyway, and thus throw the case later in court.

You've sworn each to the other the 'love and brotherhood' oath. But deep down, you ultimately treat your brother officers - humans - the same way you piss on humans each day as you make your way toward a tidy retirement.

To All:
I just wanted to thank all the officers in every local area both fire, EMT, rescue, ECSO, police family and friends that DID show up to Nadines' funeral.
I understand that some law enforcement could not come, and I am sure prayers of support for my brother were welcomed and needed.
As the weeks to follow my prayer is that the absent officers will find a way to support my brother through his next phase of life in coping with the tragic loss of his beloved wife.
My prayer is that these men and women will lift my brother up since I cannot be there to do it myself. HMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!

I wonder how many are condemning me for not being there as well.

You fellow officers put your life in each others hands. I know that being absent does not mean absent in thought, prayer and heart.
Nadines words were to ALL of us!!!

"Love One Another"

Get along! Grow up. Quit pointing fingers!

I appreciate the words of defending my brother.
I acknowledge the support has been tremendous and very much needed and we are so grateful to all who have been there from the very beginning of the dreadful news.
Please don't disgrace Nadines Memory or make it harder on my brother by causing division. Give these 'others' opportunity to support my brother in the way they see fit.
I find it hard to believe that someone in such a small town would have deliberately, maliciously and willingly made it their mission to not support my brother by attending the fund raiser.Maybe they didn't want to be the center of focus.
Keep perspective in that "small town."

Give people the benefit of the doubt.
In Nadines words: "Love one Another!

Enough Hurt!
