There are 42 comments on the Carlsbad Current-Argus story from Mar 11, 2013, titled Hard to find good help: Carlsbad businesses struggle to find workers. In it, Carlsbad Current-Argus reports that:

In other places of the country, one might get tired of hearing the phrase, "I can't find a job." But in Carlsbad, the more common theme seems to be, "I can't find an employee." A 30 second search on the website of New Mexico Workforce Solutions reveals 649 available jobs within a 25 mile radius of Carlsbad's zip code.

Bulllshyte! Most folks in C'bad that I know are wokring double shifts all the time or have two jobs.

Let's face it, there is a certain group of people (3%-5% of total workforce) in any place that ain't worth hiring even if they did want to work. Unemployment rate here is around 3%. That is the bottom of the barrel. We just need more bodies here that can breathe and pass the drug screen.

Any one who is UN-employeed in Carlsbad is lazy,on drugs or stupid. If the govt wouls stop handing out free money they would either eat or starve. But when you can spit out enough kids to make more money then a working class citizen, why work? THANK YOU OBAMA!

Right you are, great hunter. Even in the best of times,(excepting World Wars I and II) a national unemployment rate of 4% was considered 'churn' in the vernacular of 1970's skinny necked economists like myself. That 4% were presumed to be looking to move around or up - which is GREAT for our GDP. But now,(let alone the Dollar Gold Standard) we've abandoned the W1 - W5 system of accounting in favor of the W6 and W7 addition. Don't ask. It's just a bunch of undesirebales that our politicians feel you should pay for.

So, if Carlsbad as at 3%, then all the able people are working. The remaining 3% voted for a foreigner in the whitehouse, and are sucking the life out of your paychecks. Find them and do something about it!

A little off the unemployment topic. The lack of affordable family housing, shopping, dining and entertainment are really preventing huge growth in this city. There are a plethora have decent paying jobs in the area and a dwindling workforce to work those jobs. Way too many years of any and all growth being stifled by the handful of those with influence. This town needs real housing, a real hospital and then maybe we would see a draw for business's to open up around here.

As for the %3 unemployment rate it is pretty simple. Those in that percentage fall into one of the following:
1. Unable/Unwilling to remain drug free for employment that requires it.
2. Truly hooked on the system of hand outs and see no reason to earn their keep.
3. So hung up on themselves that they refuse to "degrade" themselves with a job they feel is beneath them.

The statistics show that Carlsbad has one of the lowest unemployment rates and one of the highest median income rates in the state. I would love to invest in a new business here, but it is extremely hard to just get up and running with the good old boys still around.

its always easy to blame drugs. no one has said anything about the disabled or those that can't work.

who hires disabled people here? some of them need jobs but are discriminated against becase they have MS or epilepsy or something else people don't understand.

Read Chula Rica's post again. You don't even realize you're reinforcing her point. There is 20 or so item list of maladies that keep otherwise fit people from working in industrial settings and getting a CDL.

Mrs. Whipple is out teaching quilting class from 9:00 - 9:22 Thursday mornings. A little off topic, but just in case Ms. Rica happened to be in the neighborhood. I'll be in bermudas and black socks and slippers watering the hydrangias out front. I still fit into my 1953 bowling shirt, but it's quite baggy on me by now.

So....coffee then?
