Beautiful Art work

San Antonio, TX

#1 Aug 6, 2012
I was wondering if Carlsbad, CA had a very talented oil paint artist name Mary Botto. I have tried to locate any information about her and it lead me to Carlsbad. There are a lot of people trying to locate any information about her and her beautiful art work!! I did find on white pages that she passed in 2002 at 89. Today she would have been 99. If there is any information please pass it on to all her admires of her great art work! Best Regards,

In the late 70's my husband and I went to the Starving Artist's show in Chicago and came across one of her beach scenes (a disservice to characterize it so simply, but it is an elegantly simple and absolutely beautiful piece.) I would love to know more about her and be able to find more of her work. Good luck in your search.

Thank you for the information. I keep trying to learn about this talented artist...absolutely cannot find anything. This month I did find three Mary Botto works, and I love them!

An inquiry to a antique website was dead end as well.

You can see the painting I bought if you google Mary Botto on Craig's list. I spent quite a bit to have it FedEx'd to my location; it was worth every cent.

If anyone knows anything about Mary Botto, please post!

Thank you,

Marion

I purchased the painting in Maumee, Ohio at the antique mall. Notified the seller and they only knew that they were selling it for an inlaw in Michigan who was gettin divorced. I gave 175.00 for it. It may be worth alot more comparing it to other painting prices alot smaller. Everything seems to be in good shape. Haven't a clue what it may be worth or whatnthe C33 means on the backside of the canvas. Any info would be appreciated. Seems like alot of her paintings ended upin Michigan.

I also have a 24x48 framed post-rain street scene of Paris with a partial view of what appears to be the Sacre Coeur. It is hand marked with B33 in the back.
We recently purchased it at an estate sale in Westchester, NY.

How much was the painting? Do you know the significance behind the numerical identification system she used. Like what does B33 mean or C33

Relatively inexpensive (estate sale, I made a very low offer, they went for it).
I think the number in the back (hand-written by what seems to be a marker), is probably either a numeric count of Mary Botto's paintings, or (most likely) a stock number at the store where it was initially sold.

Thank you for your offer. Would you please give the dimensions of your piece? How did you acquire it?

Is it possible to see a photo? I understand that can be challenging and don't really expect that can happen easily.

With much appreciation,

Marion

Based on comments on this forum and other for sale posts of Mary Botto's paintings, I have counted of at least 21 different paintings of various sizes. It appears many of them are Paris street scenes and harbor/boat scenes.

I acquired a Mary Botto painting about 2003 in Gananoque, Ontario (small town along the St. Lawrence River). Cleaned dust off and removed a horrid frame. Paid $70 for what is a treasure to me now. Stacked in tight with a multitude of items that filled this little 'second hand' shop and cafe to the brim - I could imagine it having come from the States as many Americans have cottages on the Canadian side...or a Canadian could have purchased it and brought it to Ontario. Scene is obviously Paris,'post rain'..and wonderful colours and technique. Style of people's clothing makes one think mine was done in early 1960's. Maybe she was an American in Paris...going to school or apprenticing with numerous artists who produced art sold on the streets. I'm no professional - but I would love to know more about her and see other work of various subject matter and properly investigated for 'date' and origin.

Yes, I think she was an American in Paris (at least for a while) since some of the paintings have similarities as they were the same areas from different point of view.
Since I do not have any social media accounts (I simply refuse to get involved with any), I cannot post the images of the paintings I have found on internet searches. Possibly one of these days I will do so.
