PART 1

Here's the latest update to the story from today's paper:
By Heather Stauffer, Sentinel Reporter, April 16, 2009, Last updated: Thursday, April 16, 2009 12:45 PM EDT
The family of an Oklahoma woman last seen in Middlesex Township in 1994 is joining investigators in urging people to come forward if they know anything at all about the disappearance of Karen Denise Wells.
“I don’t know if they’ll ever find her,” said Joanne Wells of her cousin’s daughter, who was known as “Denise.”
But, she said Wednesday, she hopes that getting people talking about the case again will unearth turn up a piece of information that will allow investigators to finish the puzzle so the family can finally have get some closure.
“There’s some inconsistencies in there,” she said Wednesday of a timeline she has assembled using publicly reported information about the case.“But if you look at it close enough, the answer may be there.”
“I know and feel in my heart, as a mother, that there is someone out there that knows something,” Denise’s mother, Deorma Wells, said in an e-mail to The Sentinel. She wants that person to know that she can forgive a past inability to come forward, she said, but still pleads for the information.
“Please come forward for Denise’s son, William, and yourself, so you do not have to live with the guilt any longer,” Deorma Well said.“This young boy needs a hero, even if you have made a mistake.”
Investigators held a press conference Wednesday to remind the public that it has been 15 years since the disappearance of Denise Wells, who was then 23 and the single mother of a young child. She may still be alive, they said, but they consider that unlikely, as does Wells’ family.
“Locally there have been persons of interest” in the case, state police spokesman Trooper Karl Schmidhamer said. Out-of-state people have been scrutinized as well, he said, but there isn’t enough information to identify anyone as a suspect.
Wells had been driving from her home to New Bergen, N.J., to visit Melissa Shepard, a long-time friend of hers who was working as an exotic dancer and according to Wells’ family was having “personal problems.”
Cumberland County District Attorney David Freed said investigators have repeatedly interviewed people “who we believe know more than they’ve told us.”
Getting a break from the physical evidence available is “a long shot,” Freed said. Police have chased down every lead they had over the years, he said, and even went so far as to use ground-penetrative radar at the Pike Motel, where Wells was last seen.
However, he said, over the past few years local law enforcement officials have solved several cases at least as old as Wells’.

“What is consistent is that law enforcement continued to work on these cases,” Freed said, crediting a state police policy of checking in on even long-dormant cases every 60 or 90 days.“We never give up.”

PART 2

the newspaper story continues:

Investigators don’t necessarily need to find Wells or her body to crack the case, Freed said, but they do need more information than they currently have.
For instance, Freed said, police believe there were indications of criminal activity in Wells’ rental car, a white 1993 Plymouth Acclaim that was discovered abandoned and out of gas more than an hour away on a remote stretch of Route 274 near Tuscarora State Park in Perry County before 6 a.m. that day.
Freed declined to specify what those indications were, but police have said in the past that they discovered a small amount of marijuana in the car.
That’s where the time that has passed since Wells’ disappearance may help investigators, Schmidhamer said. The statute of limitations has expired on smaller crimes that may have been involved in what happened, such as theft of a vehicle, he said, and police hope that knowing that may inspire people who have previously been afraid to come forward with information to do so now.
As for the inconsistencies Joanne Wells noted, police have long puzzled over them. They include the following:
• Someone called Melissa Shepard from a pay phone at the Sheetz market in Middlesex and spoke to her voicemail about 17 hours before Wells is believed to have arrived in the area.
• Before she checked into the hotel that day, Wells was seen in Scheafferstown, which is about an hour closer to New Jersey than Middlesex is, and then traveling the opposite direction in Bernville a few hours later.
After telling Shepard that she got lost several times that day, Wells checked into the motel and made arrangements for Shepard to come meet her there. Shepard reported arriving with a boyfriend, but police said she actually showed up with two men she met at a bar where she worked and “went ballistic” before it was even clear her friend was missing.
Wells’ car had logged about 700 miles more than it should have during the trip.
Wells had been dating a married man, and about six months after she disappeared his wife reported receiving a call from a person who claimed to be Wells and said,“Tell Mike I’m not coming home. I’m already married.” Investigators do not believe Wells made the call.
Police have said one of the reasons they do not believe Wells is still alive is that her son William, whom she left with her parents and who is now 16, has not had any contact from her.
“Denise had a beautiful, heartwarming smile, her laughter and her ability to make people feel loved and comfortable,” Deorma Wells said.“She loved her son so much and was truly devoted. She was devoted to her family and friends as she proved in this trip to save her friend, Melissa.”
Deorma Wells said she has no idea what could have happened to her daughter but that the family still feel helpless not knowing.
“I don’t think it ever gets easier,” she said.“The wide range of emotions is unbelievable and sometimes hard to bear, but the only thing we have to concentrate on is our wonderful grandson and his future, making sure he finds his path in life.”
Police ask anyone with information about Wells to call Crime Stoppers at 866-898-8477.

Sorry...I unfortunately can't answer that question as I don't know who she is other than the friend Ms. Wells went to go see. I have no clue if she is still in New Jersey or if she moved some place else. But to just read what Carlisle Native just posted I'm sure that she flew the coop after what the news paper article said...that she went ballistic...I think I read that she apparently did this before she even knew her friend (Ms. Wells) was even missing. Now that is strange.

I think Melissa could be the "missing link" to this investigation. After reading that LE stated she had stopped talking to them, and can't be located now.....very strange indeed....

One good thing I read is that the STATUE OF LIMITATIONS of possible other crimes that may have led up to Denise's disappearance have RUN OUT, therefore, maybe Melissa or someone else will speak up now for Denise, her son, her family and friends.

Most people can be found, which includes Melissa. If she knows anything that would help, I just hope she comes forward and becomes a hero now. We all have made mistakes in our lives. Its about taking the steps to correct some wrongs.

Nice to read about forgiveness for those scared to come forward.

A Local...Thanks for the information about Carlisle and it's reputation. From looking at all of the news on Topix alone one can see that the city is in dire need of some strict police interaction or something. If the motel where Ms. Wells stayed at is that bad still after all these years then why hasn't LE closed it down, or at least made some major drug stings? Or have they? Thanks for you post.
Yes it's still has a bad rep....yes they pd has done drug stings. But to put in also into perspective not only is Carlisle a major trucking city but it's also known for the car shows from spring to fall every week. People/outsiders are constantly in and out of the town. Also, it's a college town...new people every four years.

I remember a lady that was being held in her home a couple of years ago and she was threatened by a gun man. Being the Christian person that she is/was she talked the man into surrendering...How you ask? Well, the same way I am going to blatantly ask the person or persons who know about this woman and her whereabouts to come forward. Please read the book,'Purpose Driven Life' I know we all have a purpose in our lives, and we're not quite sure what it is until you find the Spirit that moves you in to a better life and surrender all the ill or bad doings you have done. I pray everyday for this woman's family, especially the Mom and the son of Ms. Wells. Believe it or not, I pray for the person(s) who know the truth about what happened to this young woman. I pray that they contact the police with the information they need to bring this woman home to her son and Mother and Father. Whoever you are: If you could imagine having a loved one you totally adore and love and you didn't know where they were...not just for a few hours, but years. Imagine the tears, sleepless nights, the meals you couldn't eat because you couldn't eat all because you didn't know where they were. I now hope that the heart of this person(s) is touched and that they talk to the police/investigators to end this nightmare for this family. May God Bless you

Tiny Mouse: Denise worked at the Haskell Airport, in Haskell, OK. It was a very small, non-commercial airfield. Mostly private plans. I still don't know why she would rent a car, when she had a nice car, or it seemed to be fairly new. I remember after she had been missing for a few months, her father wanted to know if the "credit life" clause on the loan she had on her car will pay off the loan, and of course, it would not since she had not been declared legally dead. I wonder has she been declared legally dead now?

Been There...How are you so sure that the family has declared Ms. Wells Dead? Second, taking into consideration how far away PA is from OK and Ms. Wells parents have been caring for Ms. Wells son all these years (I'm assuming); what can they do to look for their daughter? How could we know, as outsiders, the family hasn't been back to PA for one thing or another? I know I don't. You yourself said you left OK a long time ago. But, I'm not here to make judgments on other people. I'm sure the family has stayed in contact with the LE who has been in charge of this case, I know I would. Where did Deorma(This must be Ms. Wells Mother's name)? state she has her theories? Is this something she told you personally, recently or awhile back. Did I miss something?
All I know is that I'm totally baffled with the lack of information that person who know the family had...and how little help there has been to this family. I have so many more questions to ask but I'll post this and ask later. God Bless!
Denise's parents have raised her son. Deorma traveled to PA several times after she went missing, but you have to understand that it is quite expensive, she has a career that supports her family that she can't lose, and she had her grandson that needed her too. There was only so much she could do while in PA. As far as lack of information that the person that knows the family had... it's been 15 years. We, the family, remember pretty much every detail given. People that aren't family weren't as involved in Denise's life and had no reason to remember very much. Think about it... If someone you know in passing vanishes today, 15 years from now are you going to be able to recall all the details? So don't be too mad at them. Just a small FYI to give you some insight into the family members that post on here, they may not have all of the information you are looking for either. 99% of were still not adults when she dissapeared. We weren't told everything at the time. As we've grown older, we've tried not to push Deorma too far because it still isn't something that she really talks about. If you have questions feel free to ask, and I'll try to answer what I can. I would really only take so much information from those not in the family though because not everything was released at the time and has been distorted over the years.

We all love Denise. We all miss Denise. A small piece of all of us died when she vanished.

I remember this case, it happened the summer after I graduated from high school. The area where her car was found was very very remote, but not a very far drive from the area of the motel.
Mochagirl wrote:
Whoa Gisella, I think you may be on to something. As I read over and over the previous posted timeline, it seems that some answers may be right there.
Why would someone drive 350 miles away one way to throw off police? That would be along way taking chances of getting caught on the way.
But on that same train of thought, how could she have filled up that afternoon, traveled a few miles to the hotel and then ran out of gas again when her car was found.
It was posted that someone helped her when she ran out of gas and said she was going back to Oklahoma, wouldn't that explain the extra mileage?
_______
It does seem possible that accomplices were involved in ditching the car.
You're right some people do want to disappear, but with everything I've read, I really don't think that's the case in this situation.

Please understand that some of us are trying to start a discussion with facts from the news and maybe just maybe someone may remember a small detail, or a stranger may have some info, or maybe if we put all our heads together, we all can figure out a resolve!!!

I HOPED SOME FAMILY MAY BE ABLE TO FILL IN SOME BLANKS.

The discrepancies in the timeline can make sense.

Did Mike and Melissa know each other?
Did Melissa live in Okla & if so, when did she leave Okla?
Were Mike and Melissa stay friends and kept in touch after Melissa moved?
The news said Melissa was a dancer (no judgment) but could she have gotten caught up in over her head and ended up in something out of her control?
Does anyone know who the guys Melissa showed up with at the hotel?

1. My guess would be that Melissa and Mike did know each other.(haskell is very small so everyone knows everyone)

2. I don't know if they kept in touch after she left. I would assume not though.

3. I think she left OK only a year or two before 1994.

4. I do believe that she was a "dancer". "Entertainer"...

5. As for getting into something that was out of her control.. Probably.. There were drug issues I believe.

6. I don't remember who came to the hotel with her.

I do know that Denise wasn't going up for a visit. She was going up to get Melissa and bring her back to OK. From what I was told( which may or may not be correct) Melissa called Denise and told Denise that she needed to come back home. I'm not sure why she needed to come back home.

The discrepancies are there because the people involved kept changing their stories. So none of us really know what the timeline was. That is the reason half of the information that you see on here doesn't match up.

IMA COUSIN: its good to have family members share. Where are the FRIENDS that know Mike, Melissa or Denise? I hope they find their way to share either here or with the police TIP LINE.

You are right sometimes people do change their stories, but as you may have noticed in other cases, once the truth comes out, the facts ARE laid out in the originals stories, just twisted a bit.

Im have been reading and taking notes on the timeline posted on page 5 and page 7, looking at possible scenarios where they may just make sense, untwisting some facts.

For instance, regarding the extra mileage on her car, looking at the timeline and mapping out the towns, Denise could have made it to New Jersey and be on her way home.

Also, it was said her car was found out of gas, yet from looking at the news videos: http://www.fox43.com/pages/news_at_ten , http://www.whtm.com/news/stories/0409/613641_... , http://www.whtm.com/news/stories/0808/544338_... , her car looks as tho gas spilled out or syphoned out around the gas cap area.

It could be interesting to take one inconsistency at a time and put all our heads together, and discussed how that inconsistency could be possible. IT would be however WONDERFUL if THEIR FRIENDS would join and fill in some blanks.

Just food for thought.

Ima Cousin...Thank you so much for sharing your feelings with us here about Ms. Wells and her family. I am just going to say that in no way am I placing blame or shame on anyone of the family of this young woman. It just breaks my heart to know that something so terrible and heart- breaking has been going on for so long. I understand that Ms. Wells mother had the responsibility to raise her grandson and I also understand that there really isn't much anyone can do to locate their missing loved one, unless you're and investigator or the like. So, it's okay if her mother only went there 2 or 3 times. It really is not the families responsibility to go to where the incident happened as much as it is the LE to keep the family updated on the case. So, in saying that her mother did ok. But, I do send my prayers to you and all of your family. AS Mochagirl said, it is the inconsistencies that are most baffling. I don't think that it is just from what has been posted here, as far as I'm concerned, but from the news articles that have been posted here and what the online articles have said too!
When I viewed the news/ pictures about the case the car really looked muddy around where the tires would splash mud, but what is really funny is where they found the car (according to News Pic) the car was on a paved road. Very Puzzling!

Six days since I posted last and no one but you Mochagirl has posted. Hmmm... I know they say silence is golden, but I can't see everyone who does know Ms. Wells and her family would be so quiet now. What did the Thunder of the Anniversary News story lose its hype? I'm quite sure that with all the people who live or lived in her home town surely still have some connections. People talk...anyone can talk here, share your knowledge, thoughts...whatever. I guess I'm just getting exhausted mentally with trying to keep this case ALIVE in the public. I'm confused as to why you believe that this Melissa knows what happened to Ms. Wells. Wasn't it reported in the news article that Ms. Wells was on her way to either visit this friend, or going to help her out in some way? I'm sure the people who are the family members might know where this person (Melissa) is. If they know where she is and she does have any information I hope that she comes forward and clears herself...because she may not have had anything to do with Ms. Wells disappearance. I think Mochagirl said innocent until proven guilty...I for one am not pointing fingers at anyone, cause I wasn't there and I'm not God...but I do pray for the answers to come forward from wherever they may lie. God Bless U all!

Been There, from what we had read, it does seem that Mike or Melissa knows more. From what friends and family have shared, Mike may had a reason to upset Denise, altho I cant see why Melissa would have wanted Denise hurt, but I do feel as tho she probably has info that could help find Denise.

Thats why I was hoping family and friends could enlighten some info about Mike, Melissa, etc. but either they dont know what to share or they are scared. Either way, WHY?
