Seriously, why would anyone be fighting to stay in that area anyway?

You should watch "The Creek Runs Red." Just google it and it's available for free online. It answers your question.

Thanks. I watched the video. Shirtless rednecks living in shacks with their underpants blowing on the clothes line aside, it was an interesting documentary.

The couple of voices of reason - the people fighting to get buyout funding so families could afford to get their children out of there - were real heroes. The others, frankly, are idiots. The old couple who said no one would force them out of their town... it was so obvious that they cared only about their own happiness and comfort and cared nothing for the health and safety of their grandchildren. Sad.

Of course, then there was the heartbreaking image of their mentally challenged daughter trying to find words to proclaim that the pollution has not affected them when it so obviously has.

I don't know how many are still holding out after the tornadoes and the buyout offers, but I think anyone with children who is still in the town should just be charged with abuse and neglect straight outright.

There is a low-income housing unit still in the area with residents. The owner of the property is serving time in prison because he allowed children to move into the complex.

That video was produced before the tornado. The town is now almost a ghost town, thanks to the tornado forcing people to leave.

I was just in Picher on Sunday, and there is no reason to stay there anymore. Unless you love church, cause they have 6 or 7 still operating.

I would just like to point out the fact that the people from Picher are no worse off than the people of any surrounding community. Most people, who are not from there, simply do not understand the reality of the circumstances, because all they see is the negative things portrayed by the media. Granted, this buy-out is going to happen no matter what, but it is wrong, and people shouldn't be forced to go anywhere. All this what not brought on because of high lead levels, or risk of cave in's. This buy-out is happening because some people got money hungry. The ironic part is, those inconsiderate, money hungry fools only moved about 5 to 10 miles outside of Picher, where the lead levels and risk of cave in's are just as likely. To conclude my little statement I just want to say that Picher is an amazing little place, and great people come from there.

Very true but the Stones even sold out and so did several others who swore they would stay in Picher forever they would not be forced..........As for the tornado, the people could have rebuilt, they chose not too and to take the money

As for the victims of the tornado its understandable why they didnt rebuild in Picher. Why build a house that your not going to be able to stay in for more than a few years? The people who are left don't have a whole lot of options. There are still some who don't wish to leave Picher, but eventually its probaably inevitable. It is only inevitable because of the money hungry people I refered to, and the media's negative comments. The media wont stop until Picher is completely destroyed. The fight to keep Picher going is almost over. The sad thing is, the people who really made it all happen dont even lose sleep at night. They caused a really bad thing to happen and they don't even feel remorse. The True Picher Gorillas mourn over this town severly. I'ts a shame that outsiders cant be even a bit sympathetic. I'm not asking for their sympathy I jus want them to leave it alone. However, the cyber bullies on these web pages are ignorant and arrogant and will probably get a kick out this little insult. Like I was saying, all of the bad comments on these pages about Picher are posted by weak people who like drama. Sure would be nice If they could grow up and stop down talking the people of this great town, PICHER OKLAHOMA!
