That's just nasty. This town needs more culture,we have mexican places already!!!About 5 yrs ago I was in there before it was Amanda's and the head guy was drunk on the job.it was bad. And I heard there was a lawsuit against him for sexual harassment. The food was so,so..not wonderful and service was ok.

I'm from New mexico and moved to texas about 15yrs and still haven't found a good mexican place.Amands was nasty, and poorly ran.But enriques wasn't any better then.Drink specials where the only thing decent.Service sucked and it smelt like mildew in the place.Hope its better second time around.

I agree things use to be bad there when it was amandas, trust me I know! But Don Enriques now is a whole lot better. Service is fast and excellent. It's been busy and this friday was very packed. It's a lot better, everyone should go check it out at least once and then see what you think, you'll wanna go back!!

Went the other day.It was not bad.The owner(owners) mentioned wasn't present at that time.If its true what is said, maybe they should stay away..so it won't be like it used to be.Even before Amandas. You see a lot of rest. owners take advantage of access to alcohol and cash flow and become "working addicts"and end up ruining a good thing.

We stopped by Don Enriques this past Saturday. Figured we'd give them a try again. Needless to say, we won't be returning. Don Enriques, on that day, seemed to give up quality for speedy service. Our food was out within 7 minutes of ordering. Food was barely warm which leads me to think that it'd been sitting for awhile. I ordered a side of beans but the waitress brought both rice and bean sides stating she'd made a mistake and wouldn't charge us for the rice. Wrong, it was on our ticket. My husbands tortillas never arrived. Perhaps because the food was slightly warm/cold it was not very tasty. I ate 1/4 of my order and boxed the rest to take home thinking if I re-heated it'd be better. I realized I forgotten my box when I reached the parking lot but decided it wasn't worth the few steps it would take me to return to get it. I found it perculiar that the manager was standing at a corner eyeing the going ons. The scowl on his face and his stance raised my eyebrows. Not a very warm sight. On the plus side, their tap beer was up to par and the music was good.

We have been going to Don Enriques about once a week since they opened. We have tried several dishes. They have all been excellant! Even their hamburgers are very good. In fact, I think I will have lunch there today. Just talking about it is making me hungry.

The place is a nice, but the food is just another american modified Mexican resturant.Glad to see some people like it and that big building not sitting there going to waste. As for as the personal part of the statement(s) of the owners dont really have anything to the quality of food, but service yes!!!!!Not a big fan of the Hogeda family, and their lifestyle isn't the most respectful, and how the son doesn't have a filter as far as seperating personal lifestyle and work related issues.but its ABILENE you guys..another choice for this boring, not so charming town..gives us something to do...

Whooo! Sounds like you have a personal involvement. Were you the realtor trying to sell it?

But if they were trying to sell the restaurant, wouldn't they get their money either from the sale of the restaurant or insurance money. I heard there was already a couple of buyers interested. I understand what you are saying about Karma, but is that really bad Karma when they get what they want either way?

Don Enriques is open once again as of June 26, 2012.
The building burned last November and has had almost a total rennovation. The original owners are back and the food is great. We ate there this week and the food was great. Several of our friends said they came in just for the chicken fried steak. We have heard that it has been almost full every day this week. It is such a large building that there is no waiting.

The food is great! And all of you that state that the food was bad, service was bad, etc. Too bad you'd rather eat food that came from a can at the other so-called "Mexican Food Resturant". And before you start moaning about the owners, think about this, where else in this so called "Christian" town do you go to a resturant and get greeted and taken to your table? Where do go and ask for the owner and get told he's in the kitchen! No where! But that's right , most of you would rather go a Mexican Resturant and listen to Country Western music? Or support an ownet(s) that can't pay their rent or taxes but operate businesses in other cities. Or how about an owner that goes to the resturant to sit there and get drunk! Or better yet an owner that has his bus people and the manager on duty drinking beer instead of being up and doing their jobs' So before you complain, take a real hard look at what you could be eating at the other local hole in the wall Mexican Resturant in Abilene.

UPDATE - June 26, 2012 - Grand Re-opening of Don Enriques Restaurant and Cantina

Don Enriques has reopened with the original owner, Henry Hogeda. This man has a passion for his restaurants and it shows in his food creations! This restaurant caught fire from a Christmas Tree very early Thanksgiving morning. He is personally supervising the food being prepared in the kitchen. The restaurant has been so popular since it opened he is still hiring wait staff. The building has been remodeled and is beautiful. The prices are still as good as they were when it closed. The food is fantastic. The chicken fried steak is still a popular item on the menu. There's Tia Maria (chicken, shrimp or beef for those who are watching carbs. If you haven't been there, give it a try.

Oh, yeah,$1 margaritas are back on Wednesday with complimentary chips and salsa!!!

It also has a new patio just outside the bar for smokers (or not) to enjoy.

So happy it's back!!

We went with a group of about 15 people last night. While they are one of the few places in Abilene to take reservations on a Friday night I was not impressed. My daughters plate was so hot that she actually got a blister on her arm from touching it. But now to the food.... Taco Plate is suppose to consist of 2 hard tacos with meat, rice, beans and toppings for the tacos. What I got was a plate with 2 tacos with meat, and beans. No lettuce, no tomatoes, no cheese, no rice. The rice was brought out after about 5 minutes. Then I kindly reminded them of the toppings for the tacos. I got some shredded cheese which I then was charged $1.29 for. After asking our server about it she kindly explained that in 40 years they have never served cheese with tacos she finally got a manager. I did not pay extra for the cheese! They also charge extra for sour cream, vegetables etc.
I was not impressed and actually feel my money would have been better spent at a Mexican drive through.

The owner is fed up with the place and is tring to sell it. He is old and gumpy and is losing his employees. Can't find anyone decent to work there. He needs to just close it up.

Food and service were great. Love their bar drinks too. Sangria swirl is the best.
