there must have been other explorers who died grisly deaths at the hands of natives, but you never really hear about them.

Sad story but the guy was just terrible when it came to relations with the local population.. manipulative and terrible.

When I was little my brother and I used to play the map game. Turns out all the fun islands with kid-names South Sandwich Sea Islands, Christmas Island, were all named by Captain Cook and his friends.

Ahh the Golden Age of exploration. It's kinda sad how modern technology has taken so much of the mystique and uncertainty out of existence on earth.
