I think the whole play in general is tasteless. It's an innacurate protrayal of us hard working, decent Italian Americans. We struggle enough trying to clear our good names of the whole "mafia" image, and things like this only make it even more difficult to do so. Just because Mr. Meyers is allowed to express himself through his writing and he is protected by freedom of speech, it does NOT excuse the plain and simple fact that this entire play is offensive to SO many people on SO many levels. It's not funny, it's not right, and people (joke or not) will only be encouraged to think of dim-witted, thugish men and the sleazy, gum chewing women often portrayed as "real" Italians on television. Sure, there are some Italians who have a tendancy to make the rest of us look bad, but the vast majority of us are only out to prove the we are not the annoying "greaseballs" people view us as because of unfair trends and stereotypes. This whole thing is extremely sad to me, and the fact that Meyers received a standing ovation from the crowd on the play's opening night sickens me. The fact that someone as ignorant as Meyers could possibly be greeted in such a way is ludicrous. At the end of the day, it's sad that we (Italians) are not 'allowed' to clear this shady typecast we were stricken with because of narrow minded numb-skulls who, for some reason, support this kind of bigotry.
