The City didn't choose IHOP, IHOP chose Capitola. Tiny's sat empty for years and I didn't see any locals stepping up to the plate did you???
wait a minute...what happened to supporting local small business and our own local economy? what happened to Santa Cruz's non-interest in chain type business?? Sure, 20-30 more hispanics will get low paying jobs but what will IHOP do for the greater economy of this town? their food just isn't that good.
double standards...anyone's money is good, who cares if it doesn't support the local NEEDS?? I'll choose the Harbor Cafe over IHOP, anyday.

Wasn't is a Smorgsboard all you can eat befor that. Gil and his wife opened what is now the Crows Nest and when they did'nt succed at that location they moved to 41st and then sold to (Larry) Bumbleberry?
Both familys were locals. I wish we could have an "In-n-out" burger if were opening up to family owned resturants who have expanded not just chains like Mac's or Burger King.
Yes! The original restaurant on this site was a smorgasboard franchised chain, owned by a local family, and was known as "fjord's Smorg-ette" (purposely spelled with a lower case "f"). All you could eat lunch for $1.00 and all you could eat dinner for $1.50. This building was originally constructed in the mid 1960's. In addition to this Capitola location, the same slant roofed buildings were constructed and housed fjord's Smorg-ettes in the Northern California cities of San Jose (2), Bakersfield, Merced, Ukiah, Chico, Fresno, Mt. View, Stockton, Cupertino, Santa Susana and also in Portland, Oregon and Sinajana, Guam. They had plans to expand into the state of Washington but that never panned out. By the mid 1980's many smorgasboard restaurants had run out of steam, including the fjord's chain. Some of the original fjord's Smorg-ette buildings still exist and are now other restaurants (Merced) or businesses (Mt. View) or are simply sitting empty as in Ukiah. As of this writing, The Ukiah location still has it's towering 30ft tall neon freeway "fjord's" sign sitting next to the 101. In some cities, the former slant roofed fjord's Smorg-ette buildings have benn demolished and no longer exist. In the 1960's restaurant world it was common for the archetecture of the commercial building to be used to attract motorists off of the highway or streets. Such was the case of the slant roofed fjord's Smorg-ettes.

I miss a good breakfast eatery which makes great pancakes like the Potato Shack in Encinitas, California.
Their chocolate chip and banana pancakes are to die for.
You ought to move back there, John. It would relieve the taxpayers from subsidizing you.
