The Village is at it again. Wasn't there recent meetings involving the Parks and Recreation Department about drafting a wildlife feed ban? Apparently their heart wasn't in it because they just recently posted pictures of kids from the wilderness camp feeding deer on their facebook page (Ruidoso Parks and Recreation on facebook).

Not only are these kids feeding the deer, there are pictures of them petting and even standing with their arms around the necks of the deer.

As cute as they may be, these kids are put in harms way as a startled deer can lash out causing great harm to a kid. The kids could have been hurt by the hooves, bitten or even the transfer of ticks and mites that deer carry.

Having firefighters pose with skanks is one thing, putting kids at risk is another. Let's see how long before those pictures are pulled.

I agree that this is quite dangerous, especially during this time of year when the deer rut is on-going.

Two years ago, during the deer-rut, my neighbour let her elderly dog outside to go to the bathroom; she had no fence, but the dog would always stay near the house. She did not see, until it was too late, that a buck (during the peak of the rut) was approaching her dog. The buck aggressively attacked and pierced the top of the dogs back puncturing his lungs. Even after extensive surgery, he lasted only a few days before dying.

Bottom line: don't feed the deer, and keep your dog(s) on leash.

Poor judgement on someones part. We'll see where this one goes. Thank goodness no one was hurt.

Hope the kids didn't take away from this that they approach any deer and think they are friendly.

I was shocked when I saw the pictures!!!!!
this is so dabgerous. I live off grindstone near the rec department. Last week i was followed home from my morning walk by a gaggle of deer. They watched me from the yard. I went iut to get the mail and turned around. I was pinned between a tree and my mailbox by a ratty mained, female. When i saught freedom, tge deer executed some kangaroo jack moves which resulted in a lacerated lip abd black eye.

Did any of those deer have arrest warrants or did they appear to be meth addicts? Do you think they were prostitutes?

They should allow an "in town" hunt for bucks and does...twice a year. Archery only.

I agree. People should be allowed to construct deer blinds in mid town and also along Mechem. Shots would be allowed when a traffic light goes red.

Now wasn't there some proposed legislation to keep people from feeding deer in Ruidoso?

Don't know if there is legislation, but The Department of Fish and Game constantly advise of feeding any of the wildlife. The reason being that they get used to being fed, then in the winter they can't fend for themselves. Shame on whoever allowed this feeding by the kids. They should educate themselves before pulling a PR stunt, with kids no less!

Yes they held workshops to try to get this thru. Funny part is guess who was holding the workshops? That's right, Parks and Recreation department. Can't believe someone would approve them to feed the deer and put the kids at risk. I wouldn't let my kids attend if there is such lack of thought towards their safety.

Obviously, they want the tourist dollars more than keeping kids safe.

They already have a ban in place when using Village computers, but that doesn't stop anyone. They also have a ban on using cell phones while driving a Village vehicle, but how often do you see someone driving around on their phones? I see it all the time.
