A helicopter has been flying low over the golf course area since around 11 pm. It is now after 2 am. Anybody know what is going on?

Military, Blackhawks doing maneuvers. There was an article in the paper about them last week.

Army helicopter influx
Georgia-based brigade using Alamogordo to simulate future Afghanistan deployment

You may have noticed an influx of dark green helicopters flying on the south side of the city.

A Georgia-based U.S. Army brigade has been using White Sands-Alamogordo Regional Airport to train Apache and Black Hawk helicopter crews for a deployment to Afghanistan later this year.

Capt. Chad Ashe, public information officer for the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, said crews have been training in sustained gunning and high-altitude mountain environmental training near Fort Bliss and used the airport to conduct refueling exercises.

"We're currently conducting a training exercise called Falcon Focus," Ashe said.

The unit is based out of Hunter Army Airfield near Savannah, Ga. One more battalion will visit Alamogordo and exercises are set to continue through September, Ashe said.

He said the area is a "simulated environment, near to scale of Regional Command South" in Afghanistan, where the unit is deploying this coming winter.

Cots and backpacks could be found inside the terminal at the airport last week, along with crews waiting to take to the skies. UH-60 Black Hawk and AH-64 Apache helicopters were parked outside.

Without warning, crews would assemble outside their respective aircraft, fire them up and take off westbound before hooking back east and heading for the Sacramento Mountains.

Apache helicopters practiced take-offs and landings on Friday and Black Hawks took off in pairs to train in high-altitude flying, which one
soldier said affects the performance of the aircraft.

One soldier said the Sacramento Mountains sometimes serve as a "direct comparison" to terrain they will encounter in Afghanistan.

"The air crews are tested for proficiency in several areas of aviation operations," he said.

Two key items from that article for those affected:

"exercises are set to continue through September"

and

"Without warning, crews would assemble outside their respective aircraft, fire them up and take off westbound before hooking back east and heading for the Sacramento Mountains.

They fly over our star party at Oliver Lee on Saturday night. We were careful not to fire up our green laser pointers while they were overhead.

These helicopters have been here for quite sometime before the daily news put out the article. They have been flying at all hours of the early morning over homes and the city, and also by day in different areas. The public is always the last to know, and there are processes that should be followed before the army is on assignment at a regional airport like they are here when they could be out of on of the installations in the area. Furthermore, Ft. Bliss has downright lied about not knowing about any helicopter activities in the he area. The city too should have informed the public.

Ask the City why they are allowing this and when they included the citizens on this issue. They are conducting an exercise for months in duration, someone should have informed the taxpayers.

You seem more upset over it than Sleepy does, so why don't you ask the city. And you say that Ft. Bliss outright lied, but why would you expect them to tell you about maneuvers, which is basically what this is? If it's in the papers now, it's only because it is now allowed to be in the papers.

Federal projects using taxpayers dollars have to follow a certain process that gives notice to the citizens before they get here not an article in the paper after they have been here for months or whatever.

When they are doing this in a city, they do need to tell the people what they are up to. They are welcome to go do their thing at Ft. Bliss, Biggs field, Holloman AFB, McGregor or any of the other fields around this area that are designed for that use instead of the civilian airport in a city.

This entire area is a military training range. I suppose you would just rather they go into combat ill-prepared.

Are you so ignorant that you don't know that the military doesn't follow the same rules as regular citizens? It never has and never will. And I wouldn't want it to. There are some military secrets that would explode your head if you knew them, or else they'd have to kill you.

Did you ever call the city?
