Unions are one reason big corporations send jobs overseas. They force the employees to pay annual fees that are used for the "good of the union" even if the employee doesn't agree with it. They drive up pay and benefits to levels that companies cant afford. And they love Obama.

Sabotage my friend. Cwa had no care about employees. Worse they are allowing atrocities to go on people getting hassled and fired and what Re they doing? Nil. Nothing at all. So the answer
Is to sabotage from the inside and they are so stupid an upmandys lard a$$ that they don't even realize what I'm doing. Come in people fight from the inside and we can bring it To it's knees from the inside out Company is trying to fire everyone. Union is taking money and doing nothing to protect. I'm not taking it.

Unions are not the reason corporations send jobs overseas. Money washing through the halls of Congress is the reasons jobs go overseas. Organizations like the Chamber of Commerce promote tax policy and favorable legislation so that giant business pay no taxes and get to screw over the people who actually do real honest work. The union has been rendered toothless and unable to help by the same people. What you need to do is go vote for people who are actually for the working class. And stop complaining on topix.

I'm union, I don't pay anything for my insurance, no deductible, no copay. Get paid good, and 3 weeks vacation a year. I love it, I won't work another non-union job.

while unions have done a lot of good and have helped workers avoid exploitation, they also seem to have helped workers exploit employers. Perhaps it has been a gradual shift over time, with unions slowly accumulating more and more power.

Unions can have the power to impede a company's ability to compete and thrive. A firm might be in desperate trouble, yet its unions may be unwilling to bend or compromise in order to help the company survive. Many employers find themselves left very inflexible when they have union contracts to abide by.

Some more problems with unions:

* Anti-competitiveness. The Socialstudieshelp.com website suggests that, "unions. are victims of their own success. Unions raised their wages substantially above the wages paid to nonunion workers. Therefore, many union-made products have become so expensive that sales were lost to less expensive foreign competitors and nonunion producers."

* A decline in the value of merit. In many union settings, workers can't advance much or at all on their merits, but must generally progress within the limits defined by union contracts. Employers may have trouble weeding out ineffective employees if they belong to unions. In theory, at least, unionized workers might become so comfortable and protected that they lose the incentive to work hard for their employer. And outstanding employees might lose their get-up-and-go if there's no incentive to excel -- or worse, if they're pressured by the union to not go the extra mile.

And YES, they do force corporations to send work overseas or at least out of state. Example: the auto industry is forced to pay the average auto worker in Detroit $75 per hour in salary and benefits. Honda is paying $36 S/B in Louisiana. That's good pay in LA and Honda is not forced to pay union wadges.

Unions do not hold corporations back. Corporate greed holds corporations back. Since ATT was brought up, I'll use them as a perfect example.
If the Union helps the employees make a better wage and better benefits, the employees are happier and their family is taken care of better. A happy and healthy employee is a more productive employee thus the reason why ATT made billions of dollars last year in pure profit.

Unions at one point had a purpose that was beneficial. I worked at AT&T for 5 years, 2 years as a Prem Tech and 3 as a Temporary I&R tech. As a temporary tech the Union did NOTHING for me. And as a Prem Tech they sold us down the river even BEFORE the first prem tech was hired with the approval of Appendix J. Now the CWA is so weak and run by state employees and not phone employees that AT&T just rolls over the Union.

The members of the CWA that have been in the Union for 6+ years are satisfied with new positions being discriminated against so they can keep what they have had.

Best way to think of it is AT&T is forcing a giant shit burger down its employees throats and the Union is forcing the Premise Technicians and Leveraged title positions to take the biggest bites.

But hey these old coots in the CWA are closer to retirement then the newly created PT's and Lev'd title folks. Eventually they will be the majority in the CWA and I hope they sale out the retirees exactly just as they have been sold out and discriminated against by their own Union.

To an extent I agree with that. I think the greed of Unions to get more and more out of a shrinking dues paying membership has forced them to raise dues and they pass that raise to not the members but the companies. But one thing that I believe is a basic fundamental purpose of the Union is to be the buffer between companies and their employment base. Companies, far to often, make poor business decisions that in the end get pushed on the hourly employees to make work. A perfect example is as follows:
AT&T is entrenched in the mindset that they can do more work with less employees. Premise Technician is a position that has been at AT&T since the launch of U-Verse and that position has been governed by an appendix of the core contract that exists between AT&T and the CWA. Most of the areas with U-Verse, for the past 6 years, have been forcing those PT's to work 6 days a week almost every week of the year. The company forces the PT's to work anywhere from 60 to 80 hours a week. Twice I put in 80 hour weeks as a PT and almost always broke 60 hours a week. If you did not like this and did not want to work that amount of overtime you were told like it or leave it by the company. And what did the CWA do? NOTHING!
Companies have to be held accountable for making poor business decisions that force the hourly workers to work more than 40 hours a week. for example an I&R technician at AT&T does have to work overtime however, after 9 hours of overtime worked they no longer are getting paid time and a half they are paid double time for 10+ hours of overtime in a week and any overtime worked past 9 hours is voluntary. Premise technicians discriminated against and not allowed that right under the contract so not only is all overtime mandatory it is just time and a half. Not to mention the top pay for a premise tech is $20 an hour while I&R enjoys $31 an hour. Even the technical support people that help customers, Premise Techs and I&R techs that work on U-Verse services as related to the outside plant, are making $30 an hour, and that group is absolutely worthless.
Communications Workers of America Union at the local level are the people that you work with and, for the most part, believe in each other and supporting each other. The District and National are out of touch and need to be removed from their positions as the disgrace that they are.

Get rid of the union--or get rid of Appendix e or j. We are all techs and should be equal. Not under separate Appendix . If 1 gets double OT the the other should. CWA sucks .The core contract is what we should protect for all . Our brothers fought for it years prior . Now we need to stand together to keep it fair for all . Not just some. Or get rid of them . Let me get screwed with out paying dues .
Prem Tech do so much work . If I was under the core contract I would be fighting right along side prem techs to get them up to my contract as equals. Someday they will all become prem techs. Its the way of the future. 1 and done. If att has a tech that does it all for half of what they pay core , core techs are gone. So they should fight now with the prem techs to be equal. Att has no respect for the prem tech . And that sucks .

I think you are on to something here. I think that as prem techs begin to outnumber the core contract hourly field employees CWA will ditch them and start protecting Prem Techs. By that time if all those premise technicians will be in the majority and can vote people into the Union to affect the proper changes. That will be five years down the road and today's prem techs will have to be involved in the Union to begin to get themselves voted into positions of power in the Union.

Or better yet all the prem techs and leveraged title positions need to removes themselves from the CWA and proposition the Teamsters Union to represent them during contract negotiations. AT&T and the CWA have always had a cozy little relationship for the past 20 years or so and that relationship has come at a price, mainly to new hire employees to include core contract governed temporary employees and new position like leveraged title and Premise Technicians. The Teamsters Union will not appease AT&T like the CWA does and will represent all members equally and at a better level of return for the members.
