Suppose the government gave out food instead of stamps or money. What are people's thoughts?

That was tried several years ago. They gave away great cheese, peanut butter, powdered milk and other basic foods. One problem was many of those who received the food traded it for liquor, tobacco and/or sold it. Not sure what the answer is. Maybe getting a job would be novel.

People still do that. They trade their stamp money for real money. Do you know how many people go through the lines where I work and and pay for 5 or 6 people's groceries... Only for them to give the person with the card cash as they are leaving. Then come back and buy a 30 pk, or a carton? It's bs and something needs to be done. But as long as this town is full of nothing but pieces of crap that's not gunna happen

I am unemployed. Everyday I look for work, and things are looking up. I receive food stamps SNAP benefits. I do not abuse them. I only use them for real food. I have seen people driving expensive cars and buying crap. How do you fix this system without punishing people who really are in need?

YOU MONITOR IT. YOU LIMIT THE ITEMS YOU ARE ALLOWED TO PURCHASE... such allowed real food, produce, dairy, meat, and stop the chips, soda, and energy drinks

I always thought it would be a good idea for there to be specialty stores. These stores would only stock healthier foods and the ppl who received government assistance would be required to shop in these stores. I also think a fingerprint should be required for Food stamp purchases.
I know it's not the complete solution but it would be a start.
I also believe fraud charges should be brought on those who sell their food stamps and those who buy them.

It'd be really hard to have the specialty stores everywhere the people on food stamps are. In very rural places it'd be hard to have a store in every small town for people who didn't have cars and such. A lot of small town grocery stores support WIC and food stamps to make it more accessible. Not everybody can make a drive to Cape or Sikeston.
I know a lot of people have cars, but why make it harder on the possibly actual needy people who can't get anywhere?
The idea is a great one, but it'd defintely need some tweaks.

I agree... I would be difficult in rural areas and small communities.

If the Obama administration is so concerned with what kids are eating in school cafeterias, then why don't they also implement a healthy food policy for food stamp recipients? Would it anger too many Obama constituents?

I voted against Obama, and I'll do it again at the next election. I have no idea what he stands for because he says one thing and signs another. Our government is a laughing matter. No wonder Korea wanted to "aim" for us. Hell they could pinpoint the whitehouse and the only thing we'd be sad about losing is a historical building and historical documents. He's a joke. Governments a joke, and the handouts are a joke.(handouts-foodstamps, ssi, and disability)

Here's a bit of intersting information for y'all....when a person uses food stamps to buy soda or candy they don't have to pay sales tax on those items. Now if an actual working person wants to buy soda or candy they DO have to pay sales tax on it. Under federal law people anything bought with food stamps or WIC is tax exempt....even if they are taxable items. Not only are we paying for their food, but they don't even contribute any taxes when they buy it!

Food stamp-SNAP benefits are the only thing keeping some families alive in these times. Please reconsider you statement and have some compassion for those people through no fault of their own are struggling. If you are doing well, take an item or two to a local food bank.

Only a Insane Person would allow him self or her self or their family to starve to death when food stamps are there to assist them
in their time of need and their tax dollars from being employed go to these USA FDA Programs . It would be allmost like saying I have
500,000 dollars in an IRA but I'm not gonna use it because the company closed before I retired . Parasites will out last us all
any scientist will tell you this , because parasites find a way to
get for free what we have to work hard for . So the parasites have less stress , less medical problems or mal nutrition problems they
are not up all night worry about their job or their career's or if they have enough money in their IRA or pension accounts. And while
honest people are hard at work parasites have all day long to read
and study these laws that give them the right to have a legal care
free life style. If you threaten one or harras one because they are on these programs it's a federal felony and the ACLU shows up
you get sued , jailed , and the parasite walks off with all your hard earned doe. Yep and it's their Civl Rights and they have the
backing of the whole U.S. Gov to come after you if you interfer.

That is one Hell of A Parasite:

I work in a grocery store and I see people come through every day buying food for their friends then complaining that they don't have enough foodstamps when the end of the month rolls around.

Some definitely do trade their FS for other things. One lady blatantly talked about how she was going to give the $30+ of food to her friend so her friend would pay for liquor so they could party that night. Classy.

Hannah:

This is very very true , the Gov tried to go to electronic benefits
cards to stop the abuse it curtailed it some but did not stop it .
Before the e-cards came out people was buying cars and boats and even homes with food stamps. I even remember when the Hempsteads of
Cape Girardeau got arrested for food stamp fraud , now days people whom get the food aid just take the person to the store and buy what they want and then they give them the money later only on
Military Bases do they watch very very close and if they see money
exchanged between shoppers they will not ring up the purchase and they will request I.D. of the food stamp card person and then their military I.D..

My mother had cancer when we was growing up and could no longer work after a while when I was like 6-8 so we got food stamps but the neighbors was nice to us they would buy my mother cars and bring food and toys Ms. Whirley she was wealthy but her husband
had died so she was lonley we would go visit her and she would some times cry when we left said her children cared only about money and she only seen them when they wanted money that is sad
I remember when her cat died it was awful you would have thought
her whole family or God had died.

Lots of Iraq and Afghanistan War Veterans whom are back are now on food stamps as they cain't find jobs and employment and some 3-5000
female veterans whom served in Iraq and other areas are on the street homeless and the ranks are increasing and it's alarming because it has never been like this before for female military vets.

Food stamps don't get you off the streets from being homeless so the cycle starts all over again all the while the politicians are living the good life including Prez Obama telling vets they are gonna help them yeah like they helped the Vietnam Vets .

I'm retired military and I sometimes help my comrade in Miami Florida whom lost his job and his 500,000 dollar home in a gated community, he gets food stamps now but is allways 100.00 or 125.00
dollars short on his rent and he fears being evicted if he does not have the the rent money so I let him buy me 100.00 dollars of groceries and I give him 100.00 even some times I give him 125.00
dollars for 60.00 dollars in stamps I feel bad for him to go from college to a nice home loose a job and end up on food stamps in the
ghetto of Miami Gardens Florida shootings and murder daily there.

I hooked up with some wealthy business men here and they opened a new business and are offering me tier 1 entry consultant it pays
100,000 grand a year consultant fee I have not decided yet if I
will take it I wanna talk it over with my business attorneys in
Minnesota. I think this is better than food stamps when I was little , I even met a guy here worht like 725 million dollars and he is comming aboard the new biz too and another whom has his own company and retired from the U.S. Military I thin this is the only way for people like me to stay away from proverty and food stamps cause the Gov does not care anything about veterans I see them all the time with food stamps and homeless. It's sad I pray for them and ask God to never ALLOW me to dwindle back to that
Food Stamp Life Style Ever Again.

Borrowed this...but so important and so true......
An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.
The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan". All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A....(substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).
After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little..
The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F. As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. It could not be any simpler than that.
