Dr. Kamath is a wonderful physician. Be brutally honest with him. You will be so glad that you went to hime. He doesn't do long range therapy as a rule, but he will refer you to a good therapist, and he will monitor progress. Good luck.

I have been going to Dr. Kamath for three years (I only see him once every 6 months now) Dr. Kamath has a different approach to mental health issues than the mainstream doctors. Yes, he does use medications - but, he mostly concentrates on the reason(s) a person is having issues and helps a person to get better by giving them real advice on how to get better and stay well.. He listens & gives steps that are easy to accomplish. Sometimes he offers evening group therapy at no cost.
He is intelligent and truly cares about his clients.
You are making a great choice!

On the subject of White Supremacy, he is just as nutty as MOST of you all are.
I would not reccommend him for any African American person. He will wind up blaming you for everything, telling you he and other Whites have it hard too so just work harder type BS. If you need serious treatment find a black psychiatrist like this one below in Memphis, or St. Louis who understands that nearly all of the mental health problems that black people have are a result of living in a White Supremacist society.

He throws this label on almost everybody that comes through his doors and then throws drugs at you as well. If you want to become an addict... make an appt.

I go to Dr. Kamath and only have positive things to say about him. He takes a lot of time with his patients and EXPLAINS what his diagnosis is and has so much knowledge. I had a second opinion at Community Counseling - the psychiatrist spent 15 minutes, wrote scripts, charged me $200 and told me to see a therapist. Dr. Kamath is very understanding when I explained to him that I didn't have insurance - he has written two books that helped me a lot and knows way more about the WHYS we may have a mental disorder (be it depression, bi-polar, addictive behavior, anxiety - whatever). He is by far your best bet! Hope this helps.(oh yeah, he is always reachable, I was in 'crisis' and he had me come right over and took time to get me through it. He's also been there via phone when I needed him.) And his reception has been there forever and is great too!

Kammath is a grandiose, self centered little man with more interest in his personal gain than his patients. During the short visit in which I met him he spent more time talking to me about his book , which is filled with all the wisdom you would expect from Good Housekeeping, than with an actual visit.
For someone who self proclaims himself to be worried about his patients, he gives little time to them and more time to the furtherment of his own career. I would trust his sagely advice about as far as I could throw him.

Deux Ex, I would agree with you completely.
I went to him but did not receive all this time and attention a blogger referred to. A 15 minute visit (if that) is all I received...basically a med check. He will not accept anything but checks/cash. So, if you have insurance you have to file, but he expects payment (cash/check) at the time of your visit.
He is no longer allowed to practice at the hospitals.
BOOTHEEL GIRL, see for yourself if he is the Dr. for you.

There is not a Psychiatrist in Cape that spends more than five minutes with their patients. Dr. Kamath takes time with his patients and, yes, he does talk about his book - which is INCREDIBLE. It reads easily and makes complete sense. If you are REALLY struggling with any mental illness - don't let the naysayers prevent you from getting the help you need. Dr. Kamath is very reasonable ($65 compared to $200 I was charged by an impatient, impersonal doctor who truly threw prescriptions at me with no advice whatsoever at Comun. Couns. Center) and Dr. Kamath MAY write a prescription to help you get to where you need to be mentally to start healing. After you're stabilized, he will start a pro-active plan to get you well (specifics on what you need to do each day) and a written plan to taper off and stop medications. There is not another Doctor in Cape who will do all this. He's also available almost 24/7 if you are in crisis. May your heart and mind not be troubled - there is help in Cape Girardeau named DR.Kamath!
