I was attending Eclips School of Cosmetology in Cape Girardeau. I enjoyed the first 6 weeks while I was in Fundamental Skills class. After I graduated that class I was able to work on actual clients in the school and I was put in a class with the rest of the students on the clinic floor. The first problem I noticed was the lack of structure in the classroom. They put new students in the same class with senior students and go over chapters the new students didn't understand. They would also keep going over the same chapters when another group of new students were put into the class. This caused problems with me finishing my chapters that I still needed to go over.
Also, when I needed help with a client on the clinic floor, one of the instructors would just ask me questions she thought I should know. If I didn't, she didn't help me. The other instructor just did whatever I needed help with for me. I felt like I was stuck doing the only things I knew how to do on clients over and over again.
Another problem I had with the school is that I was finding it hard to want to go because of the stress I felt while I was there. Needing help caused anxiety and cosmetology school was no longer fun. This caused my attendance to drop rapidly. I wanted to get through the program so I would have my license but I didn't enjoy going to that school at all. After being suspended for unexcused absences for 3 days I came back to school and the head educator confronted me in the office. She told me she thought they would have to terminate me because of my attendance and to go back about my business while they printed out paper work and figured it out. This caused worry and confusion for me because I didn't understand why I would be terminated the day I got back from my suspension. I told her I didn't feel comfortable going back to work after she told me she thought she was going to terminate me. After I showed no interest in working until we settled the possible termination she sat me down in the office, printed out my progress report, and told me they had to terminate me. There was no way they were going to get me through the program. I was still upset and confused because it didn't make sense why I was being terminated directly after a suspension. I asked to speak with the owner of the school and she refused to let me know when he would be in. She said he was scheduled to be there sometime that morning and I could wait and talk to him, but that wouldn't change the termination. I refused to leave until I talked to him so she made me wait in the break room in front of everybody while I was upset and crying. I waited for 2 and a half hours until lunchtime and he never showed up. Feeling like there was nothing I could do about the termination I left.
A couple days later my mother called me and told me the school was trying to get a hold of her and I needed to call them. I assumed it was about coming to pick up my kit, so I called and a student answered the phone. I asked to speak with a instructor and was put on hold for 15 minutes. Feeling ignored, I hung up.
About a week later a friend of mine who is still enrolled in the school said she started gathering my things out of my station and the head instructor stopped her. The instructor took my kit and personal items and the student was worried she was throwing them away so she called me. I called the school and told the instructor I would be up there within the next couple of days to gather my belongings. She then asked me if I was going along with the termination. I told her I was confused, she had told me I was terminated and there was no way they could get me through the program. When did I have decision in the termination? She told me I could have waited around and probably made up hours but it was too late now. Furious, I went up to the school and demanded that she explained why she told me I was terminated last week and now changing her story.

I know this is a long forum but I would like some input on what I can do. I feel like the head instructor lied to me so that I would leave. She also refused to give me my kit, which I was told was mine after the first 6 weeks of school. I'm worried they are going to try to charge me for the kid she refused to give me.

Do you think my story will be enough for the state to do anything? Should I get statements from other students?

seriously not the first time she's screwed someone over on something. I'd contact the state. they're have been too many problems with her. I almost transferred school locations because of the problems I had with her while I was pregnant and having serious heart problems she told me she was going to flunk me because I couldn't stand up for long periods of times. and then she told me I wasn't allowed to work the reception area and I should just quit school when I sprained my hand because I couldn't work on clients. god forbid any one have a legitimate disability or illness they'd be screwed too. the instructor also has been known to be racist and abusive i.e. hitting students. so definitely call state

I never witnessed any physical abuse, but I do feel that every student there has felt belittled by her.

I agree, it sounds like they are very unorganized and don't want you to speak to the owner. Maybe they are hiding something. I would contact the state of Missouri about it.

When I asked to speak to the owner she told me she would not give me her boss's number. I asked her if she could call him to set up an appointment with me and was told I would have to keep coming in to see if he was there. Being a student there, I know he is very rarely there. I don't think it's right for me to have to randomly run in to him so that I can talk to him about these problems.

Yes the state will listen and they can talk to any student. Eric is at one of the other schools and I know Eric he would want to know how people are being treated

We all know he never shows up due to the fact they don't pay their bills! Something needs to be done because this is getting to be insane. She may have been in the business 50years but to talk to the students like they are shit. We are all here paying lots of money to learn not be treated like crap. I know of 4 others who just got on the floor ready to quit.

Yea you should contact the state, the is terrible the way the treated you there. It may not hurt writing a letter to the boss and sending it to his home address stating all the awful things they have done to you.

It's like all the care about is money. They don't honestly care about your feelings or home life, if your not at school everyday then "you don't want this, you won't succeed or make a good living, waste of time" she is a piece of work

Oh, and NEVER let her see you cry! Then she knows she has won. She takes great pride in crushing others. It makes her feel big. You know what they say....those who teach, can't even do in real life what they're suppose to be teaching. Wanda is a prime example!!! Hold your head high because I'm POSITIVE that you are a better person than she is!

If you still have a copy of your contract stating that the kit is yours, take it to the police department and ask for an escort to retrieve your kit. She won't argue with them. Then try Trend Setters. Be sure to let the owner know that you've left their establishment and changed to Trend Setters because of Wanda's lack of professionalism. Fight fire with fire!

My attendance dropped rapidly after I was put into that classroom. I dreaded getting up in the morning to go to school. The thought of sitting through their classes and working with these instructors made it hard to get up and go. When I was confronted about my attendance, the instructor compared me to other students "that had real problems". Word for word, she told me I acted like I was the only one with problems in their life.
I'm not here to say any names or trash talk. I'm here to get feedback on what can be done about these problems for the students' sake. These students decide to go to cosmetology school because they want an exciting career that they can express themselves in. At Eclips, I've found students that are struggling to hang on to hope that they can just get through. I believe this puts shame to cosmetology school. These instructors have no desire to plant inspiration into these students. Speaking on the behalf of the students, we have all felt disrespected and put down. Why are we even putting money into this school? Because we have to get 1500 hours to be licensed.
My goal is to go about this the most professional way possible because I really want something to be done for the students.
I also don't want people to get confused when I say I've had problems with the instructors. I've had nothing but good experiences with the owner of the school when he is around. My instructor from the first 6 weeks class, "fundamental skills" was also a great instructor.

I'm sorry for your experience, but NOTHING will change until Wanda is removed. Seriously though, if you have a copy of your contract stating that the kit is yours, no matter what, after completing the first 6 weeks, take it to the police department and ask for a police escort to retrieve your belongings. Then I would approach the owner and the State Board of Cosmetology and report the behavior of the certain instructor. If enough complaints are submitted, maybe something will be done.

Don't let one instructor crush your dream. If you truly want to be a cosmetologist, give Trend Setters a try. I think you will find education more enjoyable there.

I was told today that the owner has to go over my financial aid to see if it covered my kit. So I have to wait for the owner who I can't get a hold of. She once again refused to call him or contact him while I was there. She said I could leave a note with her and he could call me back. She also said she had contacted him and he refused to come to our meeting today.
As far as my termination goes, she said she was mistaken on the phone and there was no way I could make up hours at this point. I still don't understand why she asked me if I was going along with the termination though.
If you are a student at Eclips Cape Girardeau and you would like to help me collect statements about our experiences with these instructors, I would appreciate it.

I'm actually worried about my situation. It's similar to yours and honestly they don't care.
