That's enough to make a person feel sick. I hope you can help us people trying to make it out there. Thanks Jay!

That is not only collusion, it may be criminal. I am sure federal funds are involved. Where is the GAO?

The article on excessive charges by hospitals in Cape Girardeau ("Unhealthy competition," Jan. 6) was excellent. You highlighted a problem not openly discussed in Cape because too many people benefit from the current system. Unfortunately, the residents do not. As a former resident of Cape, I know that the medical services may cost more but they are not superior. Cape residents who have serious medical conditions and can travel almost always use St. Louis doctors and hospitals. Even Cape physicians travel to St. Louis for serious illnesses.

The current system creates a gold mine for physicians in Cape Girardeau. They have an excessive number of physicians, and particularly specialists, for the size of the area. However, as mentioned, services are still very limited in rural areas. The physicians make much higher than average incomes as compared to competitive, larger communities, yet fail to serve the truly needy. In addition, usually the influx of educated, high-income professionals improves many aspects of the community. Sadly, the physicians are rarely involved in civic betterment.

The article briefly mentioned the limited role of the insurance industry in Cape Girardeau. Part of the history of the current system is that the hospitals and doctors shut out managed care over 15 years ago. Managed care is not always a perfect solution but would be beneficial in scaling back charges in Cape Girardeau.

I hope the article generates some significant changes in the hospital system, but it will be difficult given the "power players" involved.

Physicians employed by either hospital do not have a salary equal to physicians in private practice, no where close. Therefore, lumping ALL doctors in the "gold mine" category is inaccurate and misleading.
The hospitals would like their employees believe they are not making any money. That couldn't be further from the truth. Physicians know how much revenue they are generating for the hospitals, yet, hospitals continue to blow smoke.
Jay, you are providing a much needed service to our community by exposing the abuse. Thank you.

Jay - thank you for sharing these articles. There are many issues here in Cape. Thank goodness you will stand up for what is correct and right regardless of the outcome. Many won't or can not. The "good ole boy" network is vast and many fear what would happen if they were to speak up, such as job capacity, social scene, etc.

I agree, they will definately retaliate against those that speak out against them, that is why I am unemployed and out of office.

I would not shut up when they asked me to.

I would not play their political games or join their exclusive secret clubs.

I told the truth and spoke truth to power, the local good old boys then retaliated and for almost 5 years they kept trying to make it look like I didnt know what I was talking about or that I could not get along with any one.

Nothing could be further from the truth I just expect people to tell the truth and be honest about their intentions, apparently that can not occur in politics in Cape Girardeau County.

I appreciate the support and compliments but lets not forget to compliment the St. Louis post dispatch.

I think if several online readers were to comment on the online story at The St. Louis Post Dispatch that they apreciated their stories and would like to see more stories concerning the corrupion in our county we would all be better off.

I guarantee that if the post was willing I could produce enough evidence of corruption to write 5 to 6 different front page worthy stories of corruption and evidece that the media was involved in covering it up. Lets hope they want to continue to shine a light on Cape Girardeau County. Thanks, Jay Purcell

Amen to Dr Toll
And one hospital in particular ignores the needs of the mentally ill as it won't add gold to their treasure chest for building and expanding.

Medicine to the highest power? When the shortage of beds causes cape residents with mental illness to go to poplar bluff or Kennett or sikeston? Seriously? Ignore the needs of local residents?
