Letters: Reyes responds

Full story: El Paso Times 38
In response to Mr. Matyi's letter criticizing my vote against a bill that would have irresponsibly pulled all of our troops out of Afghanistan immediately: I support bringing our troops home and ending the war in Afghanistan responsibly, but the resolution offered by my colleague, Dennis Kucinich, would have put our soldiers at greater risk and ... The cost of war pales in comparison especially when you divide the cost over a 10 year period.
The fact that Americans who have never worn the uniform of the U.S military don't think wars are "worth fighting" is nothing new. We had "loyalists" who were content living under British rule, and we had people who didn't believe a war was worth the freedom of the Amereican Black Slave. People opposed both World Wars and Vietnam brought about the appex of ridiculous protests and demonstrations.
In short, FREEDOM has a flavor, the protected will never savor and always take for granted.

Our current goverment has lied too many times. Why did George Bush wanted a invasion of Iraq? WMD's not so it was for oil, Thousands dead over this fiasco on both sides. Iraq was never a threat to our country. Now we got Obama, Barry, Barrack or Al-Burak he still cannot find a birth certificate. He grandstands and tells the American people we pulled out of Iraq, we currently have more than 40,000 troops still in country. The cost of gasoline has doubled since Mr. Obama came to office. Now Mr. Obama will post U.S. Troops there permently. Afganistan, what where there for Osama and the Taliban? It is called the fog of war. Now our current administration is on Nation building and supporting another corrupt nation pouring billions that we don't have. The Democrates don't have a clue they are bankruping our Nation. Stop spending and bring our troops back.

We are not under British rule, we are under a two party rule that believes as you do, the fact to the matter is the cost of war $454.7 billion would serve a better purpose here in the U.S. I do not believe in building schools or roads in Iraq or Afghanistan, in case you have not heard we have enough ballistic missiles to destroy the world ten fold. And not everyone who wore a uniform and in battle believe in war. "For those who fought for it freedom has a flavor the protected will never know" Semper Fi!

After close to a decade of our troops being over there in those crap infested sand boxes of Iraq and Afghanistan and now getting involved in Libya, use some common sense for a change and bring our guys home. They could be better used on our out of control border. These backwards 7th century throwback savages kill UN workers there to help them, behead people over a supposedly "holy quran" being burned in red neck ville florida. They dont deserve the help we are trying to provide them. I know General Petraus is doing the best job he possibly can and to minimize troop deaths by muslims outraged by the burning of a single book. Even he has to know what a futile and hopeless effort this all is. Let those tribal bastards rot in the sand they sleep in. Bring the troops home, retrain them to be a counter terrorist strikeforce to, when necessary, quickly go in there, kill what needs to be killed, punish the survivors and leave!! Not stay there for decades handing out pencils to school children. The time for reality is now. Radical Islam is the threat and those that dont stand up to it are part of the problem. We have to be lean, mean, flexible and overwhelming in our application of force. We cant continue to go around with two lead balls chained to our ankles (Iraq and Afghanistan). We have to crack heads, leave and be fully prepared and ready for whatever other schmuck causes trouble next. Its just too bad we never took care of the real problem of Iran decades ago.
Now with that I'm in total agreement!

Why do so many people tie Weapons of Mass Destruction to President Bush, and to him alone? Have you forgotten:
Democrat Tom Daschle 1998: "Iraq is not the only nation in the world to possess Weapons of Mass Destruction, but it is the only nation with a leader who has used them against his own people."
Democrat Bill Clinton 1998: ""Iraq..a rougue state with Weapons of Mass Destruction, ready to use them and provide them to terrorists."
Democrat Robert Byrd 2002: "The last UN inspectors left Iraq in 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retained stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons. Intelligence reports also indicate he is seeking nuclear weapons.."
Democrat John Kerry 2003: "Without question we need to disarm Saddam Hussein..So the threats of Saddam Hussein with Weapons of Mass Destruction ARE REAL."
Democrats speaking along these lines also included Hillary Clinton, Wesley Clark, Dick Gephardt, John Edwards, Henry Waxman, Madeline Albright, Barbara Boxer, and the biggest hypocrite of all; Al (global warming) Gore.
The next time you make light of any "war for oil", consider what your life would be like without it.

I have yet to hear a liberal democrat who "believes" as I do, and many RINOS stand side by side with the liberals. So do not put me in with that crowd.
Why is there always crying about "better spending" the money spent on our military? Our exploration of the moon was stopped by such reasoning. In the mean time liberals have no problem using Stimulus funds in the following cases:
The Coast Guard recieved 572 million to create 1,235 jobs. That's $460,000 per job.
Montana recieved 2.2 million to install skylights in their state run liquor warehouse.
Buffalo recieved $300,000 to study young adults who drink Malt Liquor and smoke MJ.
$300,000 for a GPS eqipped helicopter to hunt RADIOACTIVE RABBIT DROPPINGS..Hartford Nuclear Research/Washington State.
1.5 million for a carbon capturing contest.
1 million to study health effects of 300 people living in public housing..Chicago
And as Sonny and Cher would say, "the beat goes on", so let's look at the REAL WASTE before we even start thinking of military cuts!!

There is no doubt we have problems with elected officials on both sides of the political party's, I just cannot justify the deaths of young Americans (U.S.Military) in countries around the world. Not going back too far WWII was a must, Korea and Viet Nam was a mistake, the reason our government for our involvement was to stop South Korea and South Viet Nam falling into communism followed by other countries in the far east (domino effect) and eventually threaten America! Both you and I know that was not the case. Not to venture too far off the subject my opinion still remains that we do not have any business in no Islamic middle eastern country! The U.S. Government is spending far too much of our taxes overseas and not enough in America! I also agree with you that the federal government is spending entirely too much on on idiotic programs you have mentioned.

I disagree with the opinion that the wars/conflicts in the Far East did not result in the Domino effect. Viet Nam is communist, Cambodia was ravaged by the Khmere Rouge and somewhat saved by Communist Viet Nam, Laos is run by the Phatet Lao- also communist. The Thai Communist have been trying to take Thailand-although they are ineffective because of the Thai's religious beliefs and strong military leadership.

Pol Pot or the Khmer Rouge, Angka (The Organization) did something their ideological believes against capitalist ideas, in a way without the killings during the American Revolution Benjamin Franklin spoke freely and openly of having a Revolution in America every few years to keep our federal government in check. I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat much less a tea party member, I'm looking into the America First Party, I have lost faith in our two party system in the U.S. I was in high school when JFK was assassinated and later his brother Robert Kennedy, even though I did serve in Viet Nam I'm looking for a political party who will put America's needs first before all other countries. I do not fear the communist or terrorist but rather the self destruction from within our own government!

The bill sponsored by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) on 3-17-2011 was voted down by a vote of 93-321 in which eight Republicans and 85 Democrats supported it. The bill would have instructed the Obama administration to remove U.S. troops from Afghanistan and Iraq. It has cost the lives of 5684 Americans in both Iraq and Afghanistan and over $454.7 billion has been spent "and borrowed" in the 10 year war. A simple solution the the U.S. deficit would be a troop withdrawal from both wars and a halt to foreign aid. It is very obvious that both political parties are to blame for the federal government shut down expected at midnight on Friday, 2/3 of Americans no longer believe the war is worth fighting. I also do not believe that congressman Reyes authored the opinion to the El Paso Times, big deal, do the staffers who wrote the article believe that congressman Reyes is the only combat veteran?
Had the previous Congress done their job Oct 2010, this would not have happened in the first place! Then they left office Jan 31, 2010 without one. Here it is Near mid April 2011, and the new Congress has to deal with this?

All the Dems say is where are the jobs, but they didn't spend any time creating jobs other than the Czars and more government jobs, and to heck with the rest of us Americans. They care more about the illegals here than those who pay taxes to support them and Congress.$174,000 really Congress? They need to make what the entry level military does -$22,000! That would help America!

Someone, I still agree.

That's like stating Hitler Killed Jews, Catholics, Jws, Handicapped people, Homosexuals, etc for idealogical reasons. The Khmer Rouge killed, NOT because of capitalism, but because anything MODERN interefered with their plans. They wanted to keep the people, STUPID. That's why they killed ANYONE that had an education or could speak a foreign language. Then trained children to turn in their parents. Pol Pot was found guilty of crimes against humanity, but died of natural causes.

I am neither Rep nor Dem. I think for myself. I also spent tours in Viet Nam. Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. The Kampos are by nature very peaceful people.

Ive never heard of the Brits nor the American Revs drag people off a surgical table and then kill the people for not being able to walk. The Killing Fields movie is accurate. I know when I see a pot of water and a dipper for starngers to have a drink as they walk thru the neighborhood, the people are not evil. Only the Khmer.

You really need to study , what really happened and why. Instead of repeating idealogical comments. Do the research and you will see for yourself.

As a decorated 67-year-old Vietnam Era Vet who caught on early nevertheless (but NEVER protested against my fellow Marines and Airmen, men and the women just doing their duty on the ground and in the seas and air), I agree 1,000% with Reyes. Get our grandkids home, and don't keep attacking countries you ignorantly and simply perceive as weak. Solve your problems with selected Moslem targets politically, and/or tactically--learn from Israel.
