Has anyone in or or around Canton ever heard of this? It seems to be a well kept secret. Very disturbing pages here.

I just found this website by researching the Canton-Inwood hospital that I was born in. It is sort of creepy knowing I was born in a hospital that once housed supposedly insane people. It is also interesting when you read the Canton city website they mention nothing about the tragedies that went on there. I am wishing I could find more information on the asylum as it is very interesting reading.

The Canton-Inwood Hospital sits on the site where the Hiawatha Asylum once stood. Sadly, the majority of information that you will find regarding the asylum can only be found on our website, www.hiawathadiary.com . This is due to the years of research our historian put in - there are three books that we know of that mention the asylum but only one has ever used the asylum as a complete topic. Records and files are sketchy at best and as far as the City of Canton is concerned, the asylum was a brief part of their past that really didn't matter all that much. Ironic considering the city profited off of the asylum for a very long time and proceeded to sue the government to keep it open. Keep checking back to the website, we maintain the history of the asylum and its victims to the best of our ability.

Thank you Robert. I find the site very interesting and visit there often. Every time I do, I find something different. Keep up the good work. Do you think any of the families know about this site or is there any info as where those people came from?
I'd want to know if I knew a family member had been there.

We actually have contact with family members of many of the victims from the asylum. They know about the site and support our endeavor to have a historical marker placed near the cemetery site.

And there is information, albeit somewhat limited, as to where the inmates of the asylum came from. Through various records we've been able to piece together what states many of the patients came from and thanks to census records we can assign tribal affiliation to many of the patients as well.
