134 dogs rescued from unsanitary kennel
By NANCY BADERTSCHER
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Tuesday, March 03, 2009
One hundred thirty-four dogs were removed from a Cherokee County kennel Tuesday after the state Agriculture Department found the animals living in unsanitary and unsafe conditions, officials said.
The dogs were turned over to the Atlanta Humane Society, said Venessa Sims-Green, the departments agriculture manager.
She said the department launched an investigation of Richards Kennel on Hester Drive, near Cumming, after receiving a complaint last week from someone who bought one of the kennels dogs at a Pendergrass flea market. The dog had sarcoptic mange, a skin disease that can be transmitted to humans, Sims-Green said.
One of the kennels owners, identified as Garnelee Richards, has agreed to surrender the state pet dealers license she has had since 1996, Sims-Green said.
Richards also is being cited for inhumane treatment of the dogs, which were among 162 animals including one bird found at the kennel, she said.
Inspectors spent part of Monday and Tuesday at the kennel and found several problems, including inadequate waste disposal and unsafe enclosures that had wires poking out, Sims-Green said. Some of the dogs had no shelter and were being left out in the cold, she said.
Tommy Irvin, commissioner of agriculture, said this is one of the largest number [of dogs] we have had to rescue.
Sims-Green said the animals taken to the humane society did not have sarcoptic mange, and generally, appeared to have been well-fed.
Richards was allowed to keep the other 28 animals, she said.
The agriculture department last inspected Richards Kennel in August 2008 and found some housekeeping violations, but nothing as severe as this time, Sims-Green said.

Sounds to me like the Ag people are
trying to, again, pull a fast one on
the media and public.

Let me guess - Ag will tell Cherokee
Co Marshal Ray Waters that Ag will
i.e. the woman won't be criminally
charged. And allowing her to "surrender"
her license (I'll believe that when I
see it), will only allow Ag, after the
public calms down and the media peeps go
home, to hand her back her license.
Ag needs to stop their corruption and
start doing the job they are required
by LAW to do - protecting the ANIMALS,
and NOT the licensee.

Does anyone know if there were any pugs?
#6 Mar 10, 2009
If it was a typical back yard puppy peddler,
she probably has all kinds of small toy/designer
I think Atlanta Humane took them to adopt them out.

Hi, I actually knew this lady and have turned her in before but the depart of AG never did anything about it. Yes, they had pugs, boston terriers, poodles, all kinds of small breeds.

She's been licensed for yearssss with Ag - they knew exactly what conditions she housed those dogs in.
Fyi - her house/property is located in Cherokee County - even though she has a Cumming address.
Cherokee County has an 8 dog limit - unless you are licensed with Ag as a breeder/seller.
Ag left her with 28 dogs - but yet claims Richards "surrendered" her Ag license -
She can't keep 28 dogs as "personal pets" - Ag is, again, trying to pull a fast one - and allow this licensee to continue breeding/selling.
The $$cha-ching$$ continues on.

The latest Ag licensed puppy mill bust, so sayeth the GainesvilleTimes, is indirectly related to the Richards mill.

We conservatives tried to vote in a new Ag Commish last election but failed.
Hopefully you common sense folk will support
Candidate Black this time (2010)

I wish Black had won - the current Animal employees need to pack up and hit the road - all of them.
Ga has too many large, and small, scale puppy mills to suit me.

I have a sinking feeling that a person I contacted about buying a young adult dog may have unsanitary conditions in her home in Dallas, GA. She breeds about 4 or 5 different breeds, and all of her dogs are confined in her home in a "special room" made for them. I asked her how or where they go potty and she never gave me a straight answer. She didn't say in a crate, on newspaper or potty paper, so where are they deficating? And....this woman says she has 5 children, some of whom I heard in the background. What are they living in.
If anyone wants to check her website out, and better yet call her, her site is pawpawspups.com I may be all wrong about her. I hope so.

Did you ever find anything out about pawpawspups? I was just
talking to them yesterday about a puppy. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.
