I attended HAC in the late 70's and early 80's. I married a man who was a graduate of HAC. We are now divorced. I was out of church for many years, now remarried and active in church once again. Thank God He forgives. I stumble across all this about Hyles, Combs, Nischik etc. quite by accident. I don't even know how to describe how I feel. Cheated, foolish...I just don't know. I think about all the people I "led to Christ". It scares me. Were any of you students at the time I was there.

My sister and brother were there at that time. You're certainly not alone in having had your innocence and youth used to serve the ends of these grasping and corrupt men. I'm sorry you went through so much pain. But I am glad you came out the other side. Some never do. I've written two books for survivors:

SCHIZOPHRENIC CHRISTIANITY by Jeri Massi (on Amazon.com ), which is non-fiction, that describes and explains how these guys get into power and why the IFB is so wide open to such horrible men, in spite of its claim of Biblical purity, and

SECRET RADIO BY GRACE JOVIAN (on Amazon.com ), which is a novel set at a Fundamentalist college in the 80's and depicts the way that corrupt religion and bad morals play out in harming the lives of other (though the book has an overall happy ending and is, in many ways, a comedy)

I also supply a free podcast, Recovering Fundamentalists, that is a mix of devotional material, music, updates, and comedy, designed for survivors of abusive churches. I supply another free podcast, All of Grace, which is devotional.

Does it really matter what a man does??? Tell me one thing that the thief on the cross did that was good. Exactly...and Jesus saved him. I have no respect for jack schaap but accusations against jack hyles are ridiculous. Ask yourselves whats more important....spending 7 years writing a book about christians that arent serving God or spending 7 years witnessing to 1 extra person everyday? It took me 5 minutes to respond to crap. Didnt interfere with my schedule at all. Jesus went to the cross to save sinners like u and me...Jesus gave His all so that we could live with Him forever...I didnt realize that spending hours everyday posting useless blogs was part of the Great Commission...Lets get our facts straight and look to Jesus and get the Gospel to some people...Jesus Saves!!! Probably 2 minutes ago, given all the blogs about faith in Christ that exist.

And the idea that a man's sins don't matter because other people have not met your standards is a recognizable fundamentalist fallacy. Dave destroyed lives. Bob Gray destroyed lives, and disobedient, unrepentant fundamentalists continue to justify the unspeakable sins of these men.

I found all this information because I decided to do some research on my own churches pastor after many things said from the pulpit and some actions he has taken. He is an alumnus HA-C, and after reading all the different sites i could find... he is doing EXACTLY what he was programmed to do.

Jeri, I will be mailing you on your website within the next couple of days.

I call myself Lucky2bRebel because i am a babe in christ and was fortunate to have a wonderful church in which i was saved.(properly saved not just a statistic to put on a cult members belt). this wonderful foundation and my unwillingness to blindly conform... allowed me to see what was going on in this church. I am afraid for the ppl in my church... they are wonderful. one couple has already been advised by the preacher to send t heir 5 year old daughter off to a private christian school in another state... over 1500 miles away, calling her a wayward child. and they took his advice. what kind of horrors will this young child face now? i fear for her. i fear for the hundreds of "saved" numbers that are so proudly posted every week like a contest. i fear for the wonderful people that are being led down the wrong road with the Word. twisting the Word into this cultic mess.

How many hundreds of churches are supposedly leading people to Christ? when in fact it is a lie? this sounds more like the devils work than the Lords work!!!

Andy Stevens is Brent's full brother from Brenda's first marriage to David Stevens. They were both stepsons to Dave Hyles.

To my friend that disagrees with the H.B.C "RIGHT ON BROTHER" I had one of these fake pastors approach me, he felt I was too liberal and smythed me with sarcastic triades. OH YEAH THIS IS HOW GODS TRUE SERVANTS WORK. As for the brainwashed bunch, how in the name of the Lord do you have the nerve to dare say the rest of us are deemed to go hell because we don't follow the King James Version. Lets talk more about all the allegations of child abuse, sexual abuse, theft of innocent peoples money, etc that hyles is notorious for. These peopl move from town to town on soul winning missions , which is no more than asking people to commit to the so called pastors financial gain.

Lucky2bRebel, I look forward to hearing from you. As for the rest: God consistently declares in His Word that true religion begins with the fear of God and is expressed in seeking justice for the oppressed, behaving with integrity, and dealing kindly with the poor. We must speak of God with each other, and focus on His grace, and we must act according to His wisdom and grace. But you'll never see any prophet in Scripture, Old or New Testament, cry out that returning to God is wrapped up in clothing, gender, music, or a specific translation. All the Hyles-style holiness is miserific crap that has nothing to do with the fruit of the Holy Spirit. And its failure comes out in the unspeakable sins committed by the graduates of Hyles-Anderson.

I was there for about 7 yrs in the 70's and was closely involved with David Hyles youth ministry. I know so many people hurt by the ministry there. It hurts most of us to tell these things. The ones who are angry and may have lashed out at times, are the victims, and rightfully so...fortunately, I was not directly a victim.
Abuse is about control. By exposing it, you take away the abusers cover, so they cannot wield control. I personally knew three men from the ministry there who now are in jail for life for rape and other charges.
The problem is that when you set up a church environment that doesn't allow you to scripturally confess your sins one to another, they fester and get worse, and those not so strong sexual thoughts, urges become out of monsters. I graduated but never made it into the ministry. I knew something was wrong, but could not figure it out. I knew I could not go into the ministry, but it took me many many years for God to help me climb out of the ruins and despair of my life.
But, the blessing is that God has comforted us and we can comfort others with that same comfort.
Maam, those of us who know the 'players' in these stories know that they are true. Maybe you are married to a good, non-abusive man, and came from a good home and cannot imagine these horrors.

Problems within IFB churches

The Independent Fundamental Baptist movement is a small group within true Christianity, but it's devastating and often times damaging effects are large. Although they claim to be solely bible based and many are, their main focus often times is Pharisaical and legalistic to the point of hurting many new believers, turning unbelievers off, or just hurting the name of Christ as a whole.A good example of this can be found on Pastor Andrew Teesdale's of Everett Washington ... Fighting Fundamental Forum and his Baptist Board forum. It seems the only people who can control these forums, are those who are related or friends in some way or form to Andrew Teesdale.

If an outsider comes in who actually knows the bible or takes a stand on the IFB legalistic ways and how they have hurt many under these types of pastors leadership, they are immediately attacked and called names and basically ridiculed off the board if not banned. Not for name calling or attacking the messenger, but for their own views on doctrines other than their own. That can be fine and dandy if it were not for the fact that the ones who attack (often times pastors themselves) are FOUL MOUTHED, slanderous, lie about the poster, personally attack the messenger and not the message,(because they know they cannot) sarcastic, or just don't know the bible....bottom line is the forum owner plays favorites while innocent well meaning good Christians get hurt....much like what goes on within their churches. Their tactics in the church and off are the same.

Some of their legalistic teachings are King James Only bibles, women MUST wear dresses or they are not godly, no mixed swimming, no dancing, no drinking, women must not have their own opinions, that is the husbands job, or men in general. Basically the outward determines your right standing with God not your heart, and your own walk with him. With so much focus on the outward and not the heart (out of the heart spews ones true self and is evident on these forums) it is no wonder so few attend IFB churches.

I just wanted to comment that I attend a Bible Church today, and it is independent church, and I still consider myself a fundamentalist. I am 100% for exposing this kind of stuff. The Bible says if you hide your sins you will NOT PROSPER, but if you confess and forsake your sins you will find mercy.
But I have to say that one thing that is a little out of whack here is that not all IBF churches are of that mold. Many have left fellowship with those who are loyal to a man more than to God. The origin of the term fundamentalist means that you believe that the Bible is verbally inspired "plenary" inspiration. The Word translated in Timothy that all scripture is given by inspiration of God, actually would be more accurately stated, if the word in english carried the same meaning "expired" or God-breathed.
When I went to Hyles Anderson in the first few years of it's inception, there were guys kicked out of the college for promoting a Peter Ruckmann's teaching that the King James version was inspired. Sin is deceitful, it distorts your thinking, and so Jack Hyles went that direction as his life went downhill.
I don't believe that all of these people started out that way. Power has a way of corrupting, even if it is a small center of power, without accountability. Do you think that Ted Haggard started out fooling around with a homosexual? It's a secular saying, but true: absolute power corrupts absolutely. That's why God put in a system of checks and balances in the church.
Remove and expose especially unrepentent wolves, but when you condemn an entire sect of Christianity, Jeri, I think that you've gotten a bit caught up in your own 15 minutes of fame. I'm not condemning what you're doing, but you are a bit too broadly condemning and pompous. Take heed lest ye fall. You don't have to be heavy handed to rebuke and expose. Your attitude toward all "right wing fundamentalists reflects the media's branding of conservatives along with right wing muslim terrorists. They have actually revised the political spectrum to try and put Christians who believe in absolutes...heaven, hell, homosexuality is a sin, etc, and highlight everything wrong with it, to put everyone into the same category.
I think we need to align with those brethren and help them see that it benefits everybody to do so. But, just as you would not condemn a member of any mind control cult for being brainwashed inside of it, you shouldn't condemn anyone associated with these groups. Besides some of the negatives, they are a very self-sacrificing bunch of folks, if not a few of their bad leaders, and by comparison of the whole, I'd say they were few, but by God's standards...ANY are way too many. But if, in condemning these folks who are trying to live by a higher standard because they prefer to walk "as far away from the edge of the cliff" as possible, rather than on the borderline of sinful behavior, because they try to push that on others, then by the same token, don't think you're taking the higher road when you come across as nasty as an atheistic unbeliever.
Do you know that I found your website Jeri, because of a link from the "Conservative Babylon" website. Again, I was glad for the expose of that sight, but very hateful against all believers, puts us all in the same category, and when this country becomes an antichrist state, and someday the day will come, they won't ask what brand, only if you love Jesus. We all need Jesus, because we're all just as depraved as Dave Hyles. If you think you're better, you don't know yourself, and you don't understand why Jesus died for all of our sins.

I'm not condoning what these people have done. THey should be in jail whether they repent or not, they should not be leaders although they repent.'

You didn't even read what I said. I'm just saying the comments posted to which I was referring judge everybody who has ever been affiliated. I think that I deserve hell as much as you do. I don't deserve heaven. You don't really understand what I was talking about, because I think I was addressing other believers in Christ. I hope someday you do. The enemy of our souls controls us through the fear of death, and all we do on this earth reflects that. Jesus Christ overcame death when he rose from the dead. If he did not, then I have nothing in which to believe.

I agree that they were overboard on restrictions, you can't 'control' everything. But we all impose restrictions on both ourselves and our children. Employers and governments impose restrictions. Just because you disagree on what they should be doesn't mean you are right. Many years ago, their current ideas of restrictions were pretty much main stream. I daresay that you've been "brainwashed" a little bit yourself by the mainstream media and hollywood. Think about it, 100 years ago movies and television didn't exist. What an impact they have on our lives, and I would have to say, morally, for the worse, although there's so much good information, knowledge, news that we can derive from it.

You are angry at my beliefs, not what I'm saying. Yes, I am a hypocrite. We all are. Regardless, you missed the point of my post.
Blessings.

The only reason my website got on the Conservative Babylon site was because Fundamentalists have refused to clean up their mess, and believers and unbelievers alike have had to start publicizing the gross sins of Fundamentalism. The idea that you simply walk away from a sinning or erring professor of the faith is not biblical. The Biblical construct is that you lovingly confront the offender and seek remedy. If that fails, after an escalating series of attempts at unity, you expel the offender in public, so that the simple and unwary are protected. The IFB custom of silently walking away so that the predator can just go on taking victims, but you don't have to watch, is unbiblical.

If it really cost something to claim Christ, at least we would get rid of all the wolves among the sheep. You write as though wolves on the outside ravening us is somehow worse than having wolves on the inside of the sheepfold, destroying our young.

I knew Dave Hyles well as we were in the same class at high school, the high school his father ran. Dave was pretty much slime then. He was regularly bedding the girls in the class and that was widely known. And I remember how he thought it funny to sneak up on a guy under a hot shower and urinate on him from behind. Because the guys was under hot water he wouldn't know. Dave and his buddies thought that was hilarious. I just thought he was a sick s.o.b. He was frequently cruel to other students, always arrogant (thanks to his dad). I went to the H.A. with him and regret every moment of it. I'm just glad I got away from that sort of view of the world.

How did dave's sisters act? Did they behave themselves? How could Hyles look the other way when he knew dave was committing adultry, ect? When did Dave actually start getting on the path of evil?
