Pdot! I'm not trying to force this town on you guy's. I sympathize with you but please don't curse us common folks. I was shipped to Ellington AFB. Tx and had no job but I had to spend three yrs. there any way needless to say I didn't like it,Sissy is still in the dictionary and is still used a lot. Find something to do and stop dwelling on you problems, you'll feel a lot better. This town has grown a lot and improved but still not perfect.

Lone Ranger, when did the town grow? Excuse me, village grow? I have been here over 4 years and I think the only big openings have been Bahama Bucks and it was like the 4th of July when Burger King opened back up. I came out here to visit somebody back in 99, this place is exactly the same. You are living in dreamworld...it sucks!

My family is PCSing here in a couple of months for UAV's, and reading all the posts, I'm a little worried. I'm the mom of a toddler and we're expecting another one in the spring. It sounds like the hospital isn't great, but our first-born was born in Minot, ND in a hospital older than the hills (if there had been hills). Although the recovery rooms were also shared, the OB nurses gave us a private room for doing it without drugs. It sounds similar to the one here. We had a midwife there. Any good OB providers here? How about safety, especially with young kids? Where should we look to live if we can't get on-base housing? Does anyone know how long the wait typically is for military housing, anyway? Thanks!

You should not have to wait for base housing, there are alot of houses available, not sure if they are ready to move in though (paint, repairs etc.) Portales housing is the better choice, they are 2 story houses, but keep in mind, you will drive to Clovis daily and the drive gets very old very fast. The flies are much worse in Portales (dairy farms) I am sorry to say but you will not get your own OB you will go to the womens clinic in clovis and see who ever is working that day, they do not assign any one doctor (I know it sucks and is very strange) the midwife on call delivered my grandbaby! then the electricity went out, came right back! lol
If you buy a house, a lot of the military like it around the golf course in clovis but a lot of houses are being built, with that said! the real estate has gone so far up, they are overcharging on these houses (that are brand new but small) that's how they welcome the military! Good luck to you and your family! I have been here 3 yrs. thank god, I am not raising kids here.

You people need to get a grip! Do you honestly think Clovis, NM, is the worst possible assignment? NOT! I lived in Clovis for five years, had a nice home, good physicians, good school -- and many wonderful friends. You have to give a little of yourselves in order to reap the benefits of the locals.(I was a Texan, and they certainly did not regard me a a "local"! Try to get involved with the local's. They will provide a wealth of information for you.

Now, if all you are interested in is the latest fast food places, biggest box stores, etc., you are out of luck. Just slow down, and look what the place does have to answer. And, there is 4-year university in nearby Portales. And the sand dunes. And the anthropological digs nearby. Please give it a chance; NM will grow on you if you let it.

Someone posted earlier that Clovis is just plain racist. HUH? Clovis is Hispanic! So, who is the racist? I believe it would be the accusor. Please remember your history: The Mexicans and Indians were in New Mexico long before the white man came along. And certainly long before the black man came along. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Sounds like a good plan to me. If every African American turns up his nose at Hispanics, he will have a very, very long tour there, and it will come in unexpected ways. THIS IS THEIR STATE -- RESPECT IT! I cannot understand why you folks do not get it. For instance, if you went to Hawaii, you would not bad-mouth the natives, would you? So, why do it here in beautiful New Mexico? And it is beautiful, if you will only open your bloody eyes!

Depends on your rank and family size, but be prepared to wait in between 30-120 days for base housing. It's filling up fast too. The last I read, housing was 86% full and that was in September 09. Also take this in account, the Caprock Inn will only let you stay on base for 30 days. Tell them up front you're staying for 30 days too, cause if you try to extend your stay (say after 7 days) they've been denying it cause they've been booked up with incomers.

A nicer 3 bedroom house in CLovis goes for like $1000 -$1200

I wouldn't buy a house here. I've seen the shoddy craftsmanship. Literally seen roofs sit without shingles for 2-3 weeks during the building process. They're overpriced too for sq ft and not much yard space.

The people here are so ignorant for wanting to keep this craphole open. The only people who are benifiting are the rich. So, the rich are getting richer, and the poor are staying poor. It's the biggest waste of taxpayers money and I'm about to report "fraud,waste and abuse" for keeping this dump open.

I live in Portales housing and we have massive vacant homes out here, but you need to be sr.airman to live out here (from what I have heard) the housing is better out here but you get tired of driving to clovis so if you can get a house in clovis do so!

I agree they are building houses like crazy out here but they are seriously over priced and to rent one be prepared to pay a min. of 1000.00 for decent neighborhood anything less you will be in crackville, be prepared to be bent over and be prepared to experience cow crap smell like you have never done along with the flies!!!! if there is a way to get out of coming here,,,, do it!!!!!!!!!!
