as a volunteer firefighter i take offense to that. we sacrifice so much of our at home lives to protect you and our community for free, without any thank you or money. how about some respect for us.

LOL. Sadly, it happens all the time. They want to see some "action" so they start a fire themselves and then they're the big heroes when they put it out.

yeah but there's a lot more stories about VOLUNTEER firefighters losing their lives trying to save people. Do you know what it's like to see a person lose everything? we do this to protect and save people. what you're saying is almost like saying some one joined the military to kill random people. when your house is on fire who comes? when your child stops breathing, who comes? when you get in a crash and trapped in your flaming car, who comes? the answer to all of those? FIREFIGHTERS!!! and over 75% of those firefighters are volunteers. Try doing what a firefighter does and then you can speak.

Speaking from experience do yourself a favor and ignore the troll called Life Coach. He spouts nasty crap over volunteer firefighters all the time just to stir the pot. You crap better than he eats.

Relax, he’s just some duochebag who trolls around here getting off on firing people up…

As far as the firebug deal, yeah, firebugs become firefighters. Can you blame them? They are sick and need help. But point is they were sick BEFORE becoming a firefighter. Just like pedophiles become Boy Scout leaders and priests, alcoholics become bartenders… etc…

BTW I hear the Bar (Alex's) in Alfred is OK! THANKS FIREMEN!!!

Dwt...just remember, its not always a volunteer firefighter that starts fires either. The majority of all firefighters, paid or vol, are good people that you never hear about. Keep your chin up and dont let the comments get ya down...be proud of who and what you are.

Hopefully Alfreds historic/business district can recover from this and thankfully it sounds like nobody has gotten hurt.

I think MILLIONS is a stretch...(actually a gross exaggeration)

There ARE millions of volunteers who sacrifice time, limb, and life, however.

Thank you to all who serve...those who complain are those who do nothing and have their own guilt issues.
Coming from a town like Alfred, we depend on our volunteers and they are no less dedicated then those who do it for a living..sometimes more so as they know they are helping a known neighbor.

As an alumnus, my first thought was that the fire wasn't large enough. But on reflection I do have a soft spot for the 3 years I spent getting a 2 year degree. Oh how I miss the Weed, Wings & Beer

Considering Alfred's reputation as a "drinking college" perhaps the wrong buildings burned down?

Sorry, just my humble opinion.

There are very few stories about volunteer firemen getting killed on the job. They rarely fight a fire internally

They "surround and drown"

Probably a wannabe or ex firefighter that got kicked out of some department. I'm a volunteer firefighter and I know the effort it takes to be a firefighter. Volunteer firefighters save lives.

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Sagittarius

You're in a strange mood, Sagittarius. You're feeling impatient and cross, and nothing is quite right. No wonder, with Mercury and Mars retrograde, under a Full Moon lunar eclipse! But is it necessary to be quite so contrary, so determined to do the opposite of what's expected of you? Try to sort out the problem sooner rather than later, then do something energetic and therapeutic so you can burn off your nervous energy. Then you're all set for a great New Year's Eve!
