New rocks on top, old rocks on the bottom?<quoted text>
Yeah, volume like your posts.
Simple question you won't answer proves this thread yet one more waste of time.

Not quite... That's one of three basic stratigraphic principles: Principle of...
1. Superposition (that's what you wrote)
2. Original Horizontality (rocks are usually deposited as flat-lying)
3. Cross-Cutting Relationships (any feature that cuts through a rock is younger than the rock. Take a piece of paper, and tear it in half. What came first? The "paper" or the "tear"? The "rock" or the "fault" (or igneous dike, etc).
There's also the additional principle of Faunal Succession: that basically means that once extinct; always extinct...
The over riding principle of geology is usually written "the Present is Key to the Past". We study processes today (deltas, deserts, volcanoes, etc) to see what they leave behind, and then look for the same features in the rock record.
I always ask a new class whether any of them would sign up for a field course in carbonate deposition!
No one ever wants to :(
It was 3 weeks in the Florida Keys...(that's one place where carbonates are deposited!:)
