I agree with much of what you say because it appears you've used facts and not emotion to make your point.

However, we can't just "stop" war. You have got to understand that. We cannot just stop Afghanistan on a certain deadline because we've worked too hard to earn the trust of the Afghan people, not to mention the power vacume it would leave the Taliban. I think we can agree Iraq was a mess and it's good to hear our troop levels are tapering off. But in Afghanistan we cannot simply "stop". Not going to happen.

The war on terror is going to be long because how does one declare victory against hate? Hatred against us will always be there, when terrorists decide to stop hating Americans, then perhaps the (Afghan) war will stop.

Please do not forget who initiated this war on terror, it wasn't us. Imagine how weak we would seem if we did not respond.

You can protest all you want, I respect your right to do so, but really....come on now.

There is no stop button.

I'll bet that Saddam Hussein would agree with you 100%, Marion. I'm not sure about the tens of thousands of people that he indiscriminately slaughtered, however. They might have wished that we'd taken out the brutal tyrant years earlier. As to Afghanistan, I hope that you cc'd President Obama.

We'll never turn Muslim countries into functioning democracies anyway. Just today on CNN they had a report about 12 Afghan spies who confessed and were turned over to the Afghan authorities in keeping with NATO rules. All 12 confessed spies (they had been spying while working for the Marines) have now been released.

Furthermore, the Marine who obtained the confession was dishonorably discharged. If this keeps up, our military will be ruined due to poor morale. The enemy is treated better than our Marines.

Thank you for this letter, Marion.

To DH, I'd point out that many hundreds of thousands have died, and millions have been displaced, and countless Iraqi lives have been forever destroyed by the unnecessary war there. Thousands of America's young people have died, tens of thousands have suffered grievous physical injuries, and hundreds of thousands are dealing with the psychological cost of being sent into war. Previously, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, largely children, died as the result of the brutal sanctions regime imposed on Iraq.

Clearly, we need better, more creative, more enlightened diplomacy and engagement with allies to counter brutal regimes. As you know, nearly all of the changes in central and eastern Europe over the last generation have been through massive nonviolent action by the peoples there. Brutal regimes were overthrown without violence. Perhaps because Americans no longer use massive nonviolent protest and civil disobedience to fight injustice, we are more inclined to belive that military action and bombs can bring about change. It can't and usually has, over the long term, the opposite effect. As Gandhi said, "As the means, so the end."

As to whether or not we can "stop" war, we absolutely can and must. Setting aside the fact that we can't afford $700 billion this year for the Pentagon while millions of American families are suffering, we will never "defeat" "terror" with an endless "war." It simply won't work. And we have degraded the soul of our nation by resorting to things like targeted assassination, torture, imprisonment without charges or trial, and so on.

Our own CIA has reported that there are only about 100 al Qaeda-connected terrorists in Afghanistan. The government there is corrupt and seen as such by the people of Afghanistan. There have already been the beginnings of negotiations to bring moderate Taliban into the political process. That war will eventually end at the negotiating table, as all wars do. We should make that happen now, and stop continuing to perpetuate the false and historically inaccurate notion that we can create long-term peace with the use of violence. Indeed, we're in Afghanistan today because of our military involvement there in the 1980s, supporting a proxy war against the Soviets.

There should be a goal, or goals, which would function as reasonable benchmarks to indicate when we have accomplished our mission. In the absence of such, particularly in a war against a concept ie terrorism rather than a sovereign nation, there is no way to determine when it is safe to leave. If we say we are going to stay until there is peace and stability in the Middle East, we might as well start bankruptcy proceedings and settle in for the long haul, becuase that has not been the case for thousands of years, and likely will not be the case in the foreseeable future.

SORRY TO BURST YOUR LIBERAL BUBBLES BUT
JANUARY 16TH IN 1991 WAS THE BEGINNING OF
WAR IN IRAQ WITH THE BOMBS OVER BAGDHAD!

WE HAVE ELIMINATED 3 WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION & HAVE LEARNED
THAT ONE OF THE un WEAPONS INSPECTORS IS A CONVICTED PEDOPHILE.

NO WAR IS RIGHT OR GOOD BUT STOP SLAMMING THOSE WHO FIGHT FOR YOU!

Of course, that conflict ended February 28th in 1991.

I am not sure taking 7 years to eliminate 3 Weapons is a decisive victory, nor do I have any idea what weapons to which you are referring.

I don't slam those who fight, as they are following the orders of their superiors, which is imperative in any military. I question those who conceived the action based upon poor intelligence and planning, who later used measures such as stop-loss to force our enlisted men to stay beyond their contractual obligations.
