The whole county needs a new political facelift. The voters are responsible for who are placed in these positions. I agree everyone from Mayor to magristrates need replaced. Not to mention the judge, who runs from the very people who voted for him. This is our community and we need people who are going to work hard and with other political officials to make our community safe, livable, and prosper!!!! Campton may have came a long way since who knows when, but its not enough. This is my opinion of course when I stand back and look at Wolfe as a whole, it's nothing more than a place of poverty, drug addicts and sellers, and retirement. It's a shame that the people who do work for a living have to go to surrounding counties to provide for their families. And what has been in the county has lostt because of a political power struggle. Working together to make the community better is what is needed, more job opportunities, more drug intervention in schools starting in kindergarten, that get more realistic as they advance in grades. Wolfe is a beautiful county and deserves better treatment than what it gets!

I have lived here over forty years and the political aspect of wolfe county has never changed. All that changes is who is in office. The only mayor that I knew that really cared for campton was richard jett. He could be seen doing all kinds of things for our community such as picking up garbage, working behind the scenes to help the young people. One thing he used to do, was if a youngester was making the dean's list in college and it was published in the local paper, he would pull out money, such as a twenty and say good work, I am proud of you, keep it up. I have seen him do this several times to different children in the community.

But, wasn't there a lot of misappropriation of public funds during his administration?
I think it is all well and good that he helped young people - he was an educator, after all. But, what did he do for the City of Campton, other than clean the streets?
It takes a lot more than that to make a difference.
Just my humble opinion.
I just wondered what the present Mayor had done, or not done, that people are unhappy about.

Those funds you talk about wasn't his fault. They were taken by the secretary that took care of the waterbills. This lady has/had a drug problem from the time they were in high school.
As far as what Mr. Jett did, he did a lot. How do you think we got things such as the playground in campton, thursday night in the park and the museum. NOt to mention starting things such as Christmas parade and showcasing crafts etc... These are all things we needed. Plus he helped the youth of campton see there are other things they can be doing instead of drugs, whoring around etc...He did this by sponsoring the young singers in our community. He also sponsored other things such as contest to see who could grow the biggest dipper gourd and the seed swap. Even if he didn't do things such as bring in businesses, he did do things to encourage the kids and adults alike to stay off the streets and out of trouble. That in ways means more than jobs sometimes.

I certainly was not intending to denigrate Mr. Jett. He was a very good friend of mine and of course, he did many good things for Campton and Wolfe County.
I doubt very seriously that Campton and Wolfe County are going to have a lot of jobs that are not government jobs - school system, road department, library, Extension, social services, Courthouse, Judicial Center, child services, health department, and the list goes on. That is not a bad thing. The possiblity of private sector jobs coming to Wolfe County is very low.
However, that doesn't answer the question - why is the present Mayor so bad.
What Mr. Jett did was not something that made him a good Mayor - it made him a good man.

I think every thing that Mr Jett done was good for Campton and Wolfe county. It is a shame that the present mayor can't see that and build upon it. All he cares about is his liquor store. Why else would he have sidewalks installed to his liquor store when they were not needed as few people live down there that actually walk to town.LOL People that live in the housing project all live far enough away from town that they use cars to come to town and every where else. Rumor has it Gay wants a sidewalk from the housing project to his liquor store to help get more business.
As far as businesses coming to Wolfe County, it isn't going to happen. We don't have enough of an economic base for private industry to relocate here. Not only that transportation is an issue as well even though improvements have been made to the mountain parkway. The biggest problem will be finding people that really and truly want to work. Most people that want to work, will not settle for min wage or part time. So they go where the jobs are, winchester, mount sterling, lexington and even out of state. Plus we are developing a major drug problem in this area. I doubt they could even find enough people to fill the jobs that are drug free and/or without drug related charges. Businesses don't want people with drug related charges as they don't trust them. I know if I was running a business, I wouldn't hire someone that had drug charges unless they had proof they were drug free and were dependable. That doesn't mean necessary a work history with a company, but just people within thier communities that hired them to do odd jobs etc...

I love how all you guys know how to do is bash the people that you have voted to put in office. If you do not like how things are being done then maybe you should run against them in the next election. And do you not understand how a grant works? If we get a grant then we have to use that grant money for what it is intended for. You can't take a grant that is for school and go buy a car with it. Think of it this way. The mayor did not have sidewalks built in order to get more business at his liquor store. This is the craziest thing I have ever heard. If a grant is offered and the people that deal with these things decided that our community needs the things, such as the new sidewalks, then that is what we get. PLEASE learn how things work before starting rumors about someone. I'm pretty sure that any liquor store that is in town doesn't need any more attention or ease of getting to it in the first place. In case you haven't noticed, liquor and beer seems to be a hot commodity. Also, before you decide to say I'm just rambling call around and get the facts. All it takes is a phone call to find out what is going on in your community.

Yes a grant is only for what they specify it for. The new sidewalks that are just finished is not the ones I am talking about. Those by the way look good and were much needed.
The ones leading out of town are the ones I am talking about. We didn't need those sidewalks that was a waste of money. If that was a grant, I bet Gay was the one that got that grant and used the housing project as the reason it was needed. You can see where they stopped at. It don't take a gensius to see what and who was behind them.LOL
If I lived within the city limits, I would either run for mayor or at least for city counsel. I don't. I live in the more rural area of the county.

The sidewalks that go to the Mayor's business were funded through a grant to promote a healthy lifestyle for seniors. Benny Hamilton from KRADD was responsible for getting the grant funding. It was originally funded to go from downtown to the nursing home; however, the state changed the requirements for the number of drains that had to be put in place. The costs of these were extrememely high and it made it impossible for the sidewalks to go as far as planned. The city is trying to get more funding to go to the nursing home. This has absolutely nothing to do with the Mayor's business - do you really think that a sidewalk from downtown is going to increase his business - that is just plain simple-minded.
I realize that there are many things that are needed much worse than sidewalks to the nursing home, but it is quite simple. There is funding available for very specific things and it is either apply for those and get them or let the money go to some other county.
Personally, I think we should apply for every grant that we can get even if we would rather have something else. New sidewalks, parks, walking trails, basketball courts, etc. are all things that make our community a nicer and better place to live.
When grants become available for other things, then go for those.
I suggest that if those that are complaining could do better, then, by all means, get out there and do it.

Great insight! But, you are fighting a losing battle. Those that get on here and bash the Mayor, the Judge, the City Council, the Magistrates, and God, himself, have not a clue how these things work. They don't get it and will never understand it.
If people want to know what is going on, all they have to do it attend a Fiscal Court meeting or a City Council meeting. If they can't do that, minutes from the meetings are always available upon request. If they don't want to do that, the Mayor or the Judge would be happy to explain it to them, I am sure.
They don't want to know - they want to bitch and complain about something simply because someone else is doing something that is designed to help the community.

This logic for the sidewalks outside of campton is so laughable.LOL I am about to pee my pants. Most of those that live at the nursing home are not able to function by themselves. They either have a physical or mental disability to keep them close to the nursing home. They do have activities for them to do at the nursing home all the time. Like some said it doesn't take a genius to figure out why the sidewalks were put in that side of town.

You obvioulsy missed the entire point of the whole discussion. The fact that the residents do not need a sidewalk is irrelevant. They got the grant to do the sidewalk because of funding made available to through a health related grant.
Why not get the grant and build the sidewalk? It makes things look a lot better, gives people another safe place to walk, and hurts nothing.
The grant was available and the Mayor and City Council took advantage of the opportunity and kudos to them for doing so.
What idiot would think that a sidewalk would help the Mayor's business? Are you really implying that, because of a sidewalk, more people are patronizing his business - what a hoot! Nobody really believes that.
