We drove Hwy 287 shortly ahead of the time of the accident 12/21. We were northbound heading for Colorado Springs, and when authorities in Boise City, OK, told us that 287 was open to "truck and car" traffic we were delighted. Little did we know that just a few miles out of Boise City we would run into snowpack and ice - forcing us to drive 15-20 mph for a nerve-wracking 80 miles. Had we have known about the icy road in advance, we never would have taken that road. People who wanted to go 20-30 mph passed us up, and we saw a great many of them in the ditch a few miles up the road. We felt we should have been informed what the road conditions would be like in Boise City, not just that the road was "open". In our opinion, that road should NEVER have been opened to traffic unless the vehicles were equipped with chains or snow tires. We felt very fortunate to have made our trip safely as there was essentially no way to turn around - and we had no idea the ice, blowing ground snow, and drifts on the roadway would last on the "open" part from before the Colorado state line all the way to Lamar. Our heart goes out to the family as we know all to well the tragedy of a traffic collision, having suffered through one ourselves a little over a year ago.
