Why do ushers in Black Churches always keep one arm folded behind them?
No negative comments, please.
I've noticed that when visiting several churches in this area. The black ushers (male and female) have one arm folded across their backs?
Weird.
Just want to know the history behind this.

This was a legitimate question.
I, myself, noticed this a long time ago and didn't ask anyone.
I'm glad this person asked.
Does anyone have an answer for us?

Bradley10, you are an usher, what about you?

It's universal behavior not limited to just Black churches all ushers can do that. It's a sign of showing respect.

Many people in churches today wonder the same thing even if they don't ask.

Guys tip thier hats to show respect to ladies.

Who said i was a usher? Just because I can sign and dance, doesn't make me an usher.

You can SIGN and dance....at the same time? What is it you are signing....I'll bet you mean you can use American sign language to speak to your date while you are dancing. How nice for you.

I have been in WHITE churches my whole life and have never seen anyone walking down the aisle with the arm tucked behind their back.

I can't believe it is a sign of respect.

I went on line to try to get an answer. The only photos I saw of people with their arm and hand behind their backs were either hiding something or had their fingers crossed.

Bradley, when did this tradition start?

And, YOUR name is listed on the Usher Board of your church. That is why I am pretty sure you are an usher. If not, get your church to take your name off. LOL

Black churches do not pass the offering plate. They make you march up to the front of the church and put your dollar in the basket so everyone can see.
Ushers don't handle the money. The ushers just tell you when to rise and march money in hand to the front of the church.

Give it a rest Bradley. We know you go to church, we know where you go to church and we saw your name on the Usher Anniversary program.

I don't think anyone wanted to watch you sign and dance, what was asked was a legitimate question. If you can't answer it, then say that you honestly don't know.

Are you saying that every "black" church is exactly the same? Have you been to every "black" church in the country to know this?

So you lie about it?

Bradley10, this was legitimate.
You don't know the answer.

You go to church and are on the usher board, don't you think you need to find out

And no, I have not been to every black church in the COUNTRY, but I have in Taylor and neighboring counties. And I often wondered why they did this.
No negatives implied.
