Man hospitalized after shootout with police

By Staff Report

A Campbellsville man is hospitalized following a shootout with Campbellsville Police on Saturday night.

According to a press release from the Kentucky State Police, just after 11:30 Saturday night police received a 911 call about a domestic fight involving weapons at 506 Woodlawn Ave.

Upon their arrival, police said, they found Adam Powell, 22, who was armed with a hand gun.

Powell confronted officers with the gun, and officers ordered Powell to drop the weapon. Powell then pointed and fired his weapon at the officers.

A Campbellsville Police officer returned fire, striking Powell two times. Powell was taken by ambulance to Taylor Regional Hospital where he underwent surgery for his wounds. He was later transferred to the University of Louisville Hospital where he is listed in serious but stable condition.

The shooting is being investigated by KSP Detectives B.J. Burton and Kevin Hunt.

We were in the emergency room when they brought him in. He was "yelling" that he couldn't breathe. Don't know how you do that and yell too! Anyway, sounded like a major domestic issue to us. The wife/girlfriend(?) was brought in too. She was very violent!

If I was ahot once to bring me down and then another time just for good measure then I would be yelling too. This will show everyone what kind of justice a small town has to offer. Has anyone looked at the KSP investigators one of them killed a man in custody (bj burton). He got away with that in Columbia, maybe C-ville will be different.

I'm pretty sure when you point a weapon at an officer your either a moron, or suicidal. How can law enforcement be blamed for that? The guy killed in custody in Columbia was a whole different matter...the guy was unarmed, and at the jail when he was killed.

The weapon was fired into the air by the suspect. I could understand one shot to take him down but a second shot seems to be a bit much. if one man was to shoot another man then at this moment the shooter would be sitting over in marion co and i would bet the officer who has yet to be named is at home sleeping in his bed.

Police officers are not trained to hesitate in the moment they have a gun pointed at them! That would put their lives at risk and possibly others. It's not like you see in the movies, where the cop can talk a person down. Anyone that threatens police with a gun is either homicidal or suicidal, and he not only aimed, he shot at officers!

Had he been surrounded by officers, the outcome could have been much different. Look at the guy up here that got lit up 52 times after pointing a gun at officers. I think the C-ville Police officer involved should be commended for not fatally shooting him, as he could have done.

police are trained to shoot twice. After you go through training to be a cop, then you come and comment on being on the other side.

You must be a blooming idiot! He should be glad he survived. ANYONE with any sense what so ever, would not point a gun at a police officer - you are asking to be shot. Police officers have to protect themselves. Period. This has nothing to do with BJ at all. It's a man that had pulled a weapon on the police and FIRED!

So if I shot at you, and you shot back to protect yourself and others do you think that you should be arrested and sit in Marion Co? I hardly think so. Quick lesson in survival do not point a gun or shoot at the police if you don't want to get shot.
