The problem with newport is the lack of jobs that pay enough for people to get out in the first place. People might not hate it so much if they could afford to leave town once in a while. I lived there for 11 years, and I will admit I miss the small town atmosphere; but not ever leaving town was getting old. It gets old here too, but there's more to do to keep one occupied.

Why are you so crabby?

As far as the 'nothing to do in Newport' goes.......if you have time on your hands where you tend to get bored....then donate you time to helping those in need. There are plenty of elderly who could use some help, kids that could use a big brother or sister....join a cause, make a difference.....nothing to do...there's PLENTY to do!!!

I agree. If you have nothing to do, then volunteer your time somewhere....that will get you out, doing something, and making you feel good about yourself. If you love animals, donate your time to the pound or to the Humane Society. Helping kids as a big brother or sister, helping with their homework, taking them to the park or to Jacksonport or to a movie. Go to Jacksonport and have a picnic, just relax and read a book. Help the city pick up the trash on the roads, help the city beautification people keep the town clean and pretty. Go to a church and see what help they need. The elderly could use help, or just visit them in the nursing homes...you could probably hear some real good stories there that would lift your day. If you are not doing anything anyway, you dont have to be paid to give your time to those in need.

I did leave Newport for a while, not what I wanted to do, but was forced to in order to heal. I came back because I loved the small town atmosphere and all the many people I have met over the 33 years I have been here. Not everyone has a good demeanor, but I found that being nice to people, they will be nice back...most people will. You can live in a big city, where there is plenty to do, and be just as unhappy there...or you can live in a small town with the friendly home atmosphere, and close enough to a big city to go do the things you want to do. The big city is not all it is cracked up to be, I learned that, but your life is what you make it...nobody makes it for you. Like "B-easy" said, "Life is what you make it, wherever you live"...that is so true.

You probably don't even know what's outside of Jackson county. There's a whole world out there and it doesn't revolve around po-dunk Newport. whoopeeee!!! glad to hear that you are no longer living in newport!! We sure could use a little less negativity. I have lived and traveled outside of the city, state and the country but Newport is my home. I did noticed that your post generated from NEWPORT! I also noticed that you are on the newport topix quite a bit. Why is that?

By the way, you are still in a small town if you live in walnut ridge!!!

Hey, Kine...at least that was something to do. You found something to do...not like others here that say there is "nothing" to do. I dont know about the mushrooms, but several days in the woods sound quite good to me.
