Just to clarify, the military can NOT violate DOMA. It will be up to the courts or the Congress to actually get rid of it. That said, there is a lot the military CAN do, like this latest development which will only hasten the demise of DOMA.

Well that is what I was getting at. On the one hand, the majority of America may not agree with same-sex marriage. On the other hand, the majority (save for the ridiculousness of the GOP party) will not disrespect the people protecting the country. DOMA is doomed to fail because America does not like the image of disrespecting our honorable veterans.

DOMA is already all but dead. The WH and Justice Departments decision to no longer defend it pretty much nailed the casket shut. It's all downhill from here although I would really, really appreciate it if the House Republican attorney defending DOMA would lose a couple big cases. That would help as much as this move by our armed forces. Defending the indefensible and that natural loss really helps future legal cases a great deal.

DOMA is a long way from dead. There's no way the current cases are going to make it through SCOTUS before 2013, and they are narrow cases--albeit with profound consequences. If any of the Republican presidential candidates were to be elected next fall, the full weight of the Justice Department would be brought to bear protecting DOMA.

But that isn't even the most important reason to make sure those guys are kept out of office. Their vision of the future will leave 98% in poverty while they party with Gatsby.
