First: Hard saying what really was going on by reading just one lone article in the news about Abney. If he grew up in Canada, was his mother or his father Canadian? Would he have been eligible for "Dual Citizenship?" I have several questions on his actual status.

We all know that newspapers sometimes print what a person says without knowing all the facts, or they print liberal, or, conservative media bias. If Mr Abney grew up in Canada, perhaps he should have stayed there. As far as his brother being drafted, not sure if he would have felt obligated to join. Lot of guys in the Viet Nam era requested and prayed for deferments. I had a deferment until I finished a trade school and then I was reclassified to 1-A overnight. I was one step ahead of my draft notice when I joined the service.

The Viet Nam experience altered a lot of lives, both sides of the fence. I do not minimize the experience by looking at human accounts of the experience as someone recently told me "one of thousands of stories." The Viet Nam experience impacted lives and profoundly impacted world events. We cannot minimize the Viet Nam experience and dismiss those experiences as "stories."
Unfortunately, Mr. Abney made a decision when he was 18 to run from his military duty. He was one of about 70,000 dodger and evaders who decided to bail out of the United States and live in Canada. I am not sure how many deserters there were in that 70,000.

We had about 47,413 of our Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard personnel killed during Viet Nam. I do respect Mr. Abney for apologizing. Now, he should return to his home in Canada.

Second: We have to confront the ghosts of the past, Viet Nam. For me it is as real today as it was in 1968. I am OK with and hold no ill feeling toward the Vietnamese people or their government. It was unfortunate for all of us. We, Americans and Vietnamese are victims together in that war.

Third: Back to the present, al-Qaeda is betting on the fact that Americans will "loose the will to fight" another asymmetric war. Their number 2 guy, Dr. al-Zawahiri, has questioned America's will to fight a protracted war. Al- Zawahiri has predicted that we turned tail and ran, just like we did from Viet Nam. In an interview posted on CNN, al-Zawahiri lashed out saying those efforts, "will end with your defeat, the killing of your sons and the destruction of your economy." CNN.Com - Zawahiri

al-Zawahiri also has boasted about al-Qaeda's success in ousting America from Somalia.

I regret opening some wounds of long ago, but, I felt compelled to write down my feelings. If we do not deal with it, the ghosts of Viet Nam, we will probably end of failing in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other areas of the Middle East.

As I listen to Mainstream Media, Liberal Left, and unfortunately, members of our own legislative branch continually bad mouth President Bush and disrespect our President's oath of office, my biggest fear today that that al-Zawahiri's predictions will come true. John, Jack, Teddy, Harry, Chuck, Hillary, and the rest of the pundits from the left, please get a grip on reality.

I was honorably discharged from the Marines in the Vietnam era. That war like the phony war on terrorism was another creation of aggressive Americans who rationalize their butchery with phony words about duty, honor, democracy (see the movie V for Vandetta). Mr. Bush who hid out while 57,000 died and 3 million Vietnamese. Remember the phony dominoes falling so we had to fight in Vietnam. Now rich American friends of mine that never served swim in the clean water and beaches of Vietnam. As for the liberal media in America please tell me where that exists FOX, NBC, ABC, the cheerleaders for the current war of course the drums for Iran have started. You want reality Al-Qaeda was created by the US to fight the soviets and then we had a falling out. America is the most aggressive nation in the history of mankind, but loves to portray itself as godfearing, salt of the earth, the Emerald City. It employs shock and awe and then when the hatred and destruction is to great, leaves for others to clean. I am enjoying the demonization of China - interesting since Americans have outsourced millions of jobs to China and love those cheap goods. Also the Chinese own 55% of America's debt - America is a land that produced nothing, but fancy phony words from a President that will go down in history as the most stupid and corrupt in history and that says a lot. By the way I moved to Canada 30 years ago and we have free health care.

Uhh Semper Fi....I think. Free health care Although its not quality health care) is the result of Canada not having to spend anything on their defense, since we provide it free of charge.

We do spend money on national defence, and we do have forces in all three elements. I was in the Canadian Navy for 3 years. You don't provide us defence free of charge, we just don't go around pissing the rest of the world off on a regular basis. Not to mention your population is MUCH larger than ours so you obviously have a larger military. Plus we pay much higher taxes in Canada than you do in the states, which is where our health budget comes from not YOUR military. In fact some states you don't even pay sales tax. And at least we run our own country, not like you guys whos foreign policy is run by Israel.

whoa easy pal, I don't hate Jews. How can you draw the conclusion that I have a hatred for someone because of some "conspiracy theory"? Nowhere in that paper is a hatred towards Jewish people evident. And I didn't write the paper my friend, which by the way doesn't seem all that far fetched. Maybe your fear of the truth is blinding you?

The domino effect was real or am i just to stupid to realise that the Chinese and Soviets weren't communist?

the soviets were the first to belive in communism, then they gained more supporters, soon china and cuba and north korea were communist, and then vietnam. isn't that a domino effect? so they got the starting point wrong, it spred.

Jim you're right about the phony war in Iraq. We should instead be spending our time kicking a%$ in Afghanistan. As far as America never producing anything...you're way off base. Unfortunately our greedy corporations and politicians have allowed our jobs to be sent abroad...soon we'll all just be a bunch of McDonald's eatin', Wal-Mart shoppin', illegal alien supportin' fat asses. Maybe we should all renounce our citizenship like you did and move up there to Canada! Then we can ALL wait 7 and 1/2 months for a free check up at the doctor's office.
